I have serious concerns for another member's safety.
Need to speak privately to someone about this.
I believe the person requires an urgent police welfare check.

They can be safe by removing the fucking post Contraceptionismyfriend .

Not sending the police or whatever agency is fashionable next week in to the private lives of posters, based on the faux concerns of some anonymous drama loving twat.

Anyone could play the long game here, using any address and details as their own, and play havoc with someone's life.

TwitterQueen1 · 20/03/2019 10:57

MN does not have the right to meddle in people's lives like this

Suicidal posts are a cry for help. Maybe if someone had 'meddled' in Mike Thalassitis' life he would still be alive.

I don't blame MN. Insta and Facebook have recently been held responsible for young people committing suicide and self harming as they apparently didn't remove posts quick enough or monitor enough. I personally don't think these sites are responsible. However I would see why MN would not want the same spotlight on them. Better to be safe than sorry.

scissorlover · 20/03/2019 10:53

Christ. What are MN supposed to do then if someone claims to be suicidal? Just say ‘that’s a shame but don’t make it our problem’ and delete the thread? If you’re that worried about the police turning up at your door, don’t post on a public forum that you’re about to kill yourself

EntirelyAnonymised · 20/03/2019 10:52

Did MN actually send someone round though or was it hyperbole from the poster?

EntirelyAnonymised · 20/03/2019 10:50

I suppose it depends on what constitutes ‘compelling’ and how they can prove it or distinguish between genuine ‘safeguarding concerns’, out and out trolling, or over-exaggeration of a genuine story?

Batsypatsy · 20/03/2019 10:50

I've often felt this is the only place I can come for advice when feeling low. You've taken that from us MN.

We were encouraging him to seek real life help. You had no right to meddle in his life. This forum is not what it used to be. I shall be seeking somewhere else. I'm absolutely disgusted by this.

EntirelyAnonymised · 20/03/2019 10:48

Unless ‘compelling safeguarding concerns’

EntirelyAnonymised · 20/03/2019 10:47

Batsy, they don’t.

Batsypatsy · 20/03/2019 10:47

I think this is shocking. At no point was I aware that my personal information could be used in this way. MN does not have the right to meddle in people's lives like this.

It isn’t the role or responsibility of an internet chat site to intervene in this way. There’s no way of knowing if the posters are genuine and if they are, we as anonymous internet users have no way of knowing their history (socially or medically). It would be unethical for medical or social care professionals to get involved ‘remotely’ based on a thread on the ‘net and MN have no way of knowing whether those purporting to be registered professionals actually are.

MN would be very unwise to go down this road. It probably opens up all kinds of legal sinkholes for them.

Hi all. We have clear rules around suicidal content, designed with the assistance of the Samaritans, to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Here's the relevant section from our Privacy Policy

If there are compelling safeguarding considerations, we may share your data with public authorities without your permission. We understand 'compelling safeguarding considerations' to mean credible evidence of imminent risk of serious harm, especially to a child or vulnerable person.

ItsAFuckingPotato · 20/03/2019 10:32

@goldenevilhoor where, please? That is concerning

SparklyMagpie · 20/03/2019 10:28

Is this a thing now??

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 20/03/2019 10:27

What do MN do though? If someone is in danger, ignoring it protects their privacy
but not their life. If they do nothing and a situation goes seriously wrong, would MN be held partly responsible?
Are there policies from MNHQ regarding what they are and are not allowed to contact the police for? So if a life is in danger, yes but for no other reason.

@MichaelMumsnet What information are you using to make the referral? IP address?

Given recent events about my own personal safety, it would be reassuring to know exactly what info MN is processing/passing on to others.

While I am sure the OP of this thread is acting genuinely, it's not a million miles away from swatting via MNHQ.
