Please help me process what on earth went on with me and DP last night

It was my birthday yesterday. DP came over after work and my main present was dinner somewhere nice local to me (this is what I had asked for). I’d arranged to have an empty house at mine for us so we’d have some time to ourselves.

Been together almost 2 years and been arguing a lot over the last few months. My kids caused some trouble between us and we both said some things that hurt the other and are trying to get through it. Argued earlier in the week about that but I genuinely felt that we were working through it.

Anyway, I don’t normally dress up but I put on a nice dress and heels. I know I looked nice as my DD said so. Answered the door to DP and he was really angry with how I was dressed as apparently he had turned up ‘looking like a scruff’ and it made him look back.

So no compliment on the effort I made and a couple of times thought the night made angry comments about it.

Other than that all fine at dinner. We got home and Dp went to sit in the garden and have a beer. It was dark and cold and I didn’t fancy being out there so I sat indoors entertaining myself playing music on the Alexa - not loud - and singing along to it. DP hates me singing along to music but I just thought well he’s outside, not listening and it’s my house and my birthday so I’ll entertain myself.

We then watched a TV show for an hour, all good.

Then just the weirdest thing happened - DP started having a go at me for playing Billie Jean and how he’d had to comment that MJ is a paedophile to make me stop playing it.

I was baffled as I don’t like MJ either, hadn’t played Billie Jean and didn’t know what he was talking about.

When I responded to that he got really angry going ‘I know what I heard, stop gaslighting me!!’ And I was literally like maybe it was coming from one of the kid’s Alexa’s upstairs and he went on and on about how I was telling him he was imagining things.

i said I wasn’t saying that just that I hadn’t played it. I said I’d been playing the charlatans as the last song and pulled out my play history on Amazon music and indeed it was the charlatans and a load of other 90s indie which is exactly my taste as he knows.

i thought that would just solve it all but it escalated and escalated about how he heard Billie Jean and I’d stopped as soon as he made the comment.

I said I hadn’t played Billie Jean but also it’s my house and if I wanted to play it I would.

I then decided I’d had enough and thanked him for ruining my birthday and went to bed. I didn’t know what else to do to de escalate things.

i could then see him on the drive waiting for a cab so I went down again to try and de escalate things. I said I felt the conversation was unnecessary and unkind, that I had no idea where he heard Billie Jean - he said it must have been on the TV I said maybe it was but I have no recollection of it or of the comment he made.

I tried to get him to calm down and come in, I just wanted a nice end to the evening but he wouldn’t back down.

It was the most ridiculous argument of my life and I also believe it has ended our relationship because where do we go from this?

Usually when we argue I initiate apologies and we smooth things over but I have no idea how or why I would apologise for playing a song I didn’t play. I feel like last night he was wanting an apology and it’s usually very easy to get one out of me, but not for something like this where I’ve done nothing.

His car is still outside so presumably he’ll come and get it today but I’ve heard nothing from him and don’t expect to.

This MUST be the end of our relationship right? I can’t live like this.

Your DP sounds awful, tbh.

But Billie Jean is in the top 40 at the moment because there is a film out about MJ, so it could have easily been playing through an open window from another house or from a car nearby, if he was in the garden and you were inside.

I feel awful as I recognise all of the cognitive dissonance that’s been running in my brain over the last year or so while I try not to get hurt by his behaviour.

Like when I answered the door and he just looked pissed off with me looking nice, in my head I was like ah but he’s such a casual guy and that’s what I love about him, he loves me for me however I look etc.

I think he was pissed off as he realised he should say something nice and he didn’t want to. He didn’t want to be nice to me. That’s really sad.

His behaviour is also incredibly narcissistic - I know that word is thrown around a lot nowadays, I'm not saying he is a narc but he is showing much the same way of acting.

Special occasions like Christmas, birthdays etc bring out the worst in people who behave like this, because the focus isn't on them, and they actually have to act like they care and put someone else first for a change...that makes them angry and you end up having a night like you had last night. I'm not even saying it's a deliberate thought - I'm going to ruin OP's birthday - it's almost worse than that, it's an automatic response. Your ex has done it twice now. Don't give him a third chance to do it!

You've given yourself the best birthday present you could have...I hope your next birthday is a far happier one!

No he really doesn’t! He’s usually very stable and calm I literally cannot fathom what on earth went on.

When I read back through the lines though, I think he was angry at me for how I was dressed, angry at me for sitting indoors singing and then angry at me for playing MJ but felt he had achieved something by making me turn it off when he commented.

It MAY have been on the TV but I was sure we turned that off straight after the show

Sounds like gaslighting really. I mean sometimes me and DH just wind each other up but the only time he made stuff up was when he was hammered and he apologised next day. We might translate things wrong with this doesn’t seem like that

LilacReader · Yesterday 13:38

Please, if you are after being able to let him know that what he has been doing is wrong then it really is best to not block but ignore. Just read if you have to....and ignore, delete if you have to ....and ignore. It will absolutely make him realise that you are just not interested anymore. He will hate not getting that rise out of you but so what.
If you block, he may try a different route - like popping round to talk. Please please just ignore.

Maia77 · Yesterday 13:40

Please end it. He is childish, emotionally immature, insecure, abusive and so on.

SirenScream · Yesterday 13:42

Yet another man who is only happy if he can dominate, I hope you can get shut of him op.

Piknik · Yesterday 13:45

everynowandthenifallapart · Yesterday 13:28

I’ve sent this and I can see he’s typing but I know he’ll just come back with more stuff about me twisting things. I’ll block him once he’s collected the stuff

“No, X, your behaviour was hurtful and unkind.

You couldn’t even bring yourself to tell me I looked nice, just told me off for how you were dressed for dinner.

It was my birthday and I was in my own home. You chose to ruin it with your behaviour.

You should think about why you feel it’s acceptable to be actively unkind to me. It’s like you hate me.

It’s the most confusing relationship I’ve ever been in as you don’t even seem to like me at all and you are not remotely sorry for how you hurt me last night.”

I get that you wanted to say all this, but the way you've phrased it is like you're looking for an apology/resolution.

I think i would add something like:

"No matter. I felt it was important and fair to tell you why I've ended things - maybe something for you to think about in the future. Being kind to your relationship partner is sort of 'par for the course' - nobody wants to be with someone who constantly makes them feel shit about themselves! I've left the tools and would really appreciate you collecting asap."

NovaF · Yesterday 13:46

You deserve so much more than to be with this miserable, angry, jealous and belittling piece of shit. People sing when they are happy, he is only happy when he snuffs your joy out - singing, looking nice, and now this weird gaslighting. Is being single really worse than this?

Well, as a guy , you sound great to me , putting the effort in when you go out, loving singing and music. You def deserve someone better. What a misery he is !

babyproblems · Yesterday 13:49

Agree it’s over. You don’t sound compatible at all! He sounds miserable

SoggyTissue · Yesterday 13:53

Please play Billie Jean when he collects his shit. Or at the very least, once he has got his shit and out the door.

Fleetheart · Yesterday 13:54

He’s rude to you and never mind all the MJ stuff, he’s disrespectful and hasn’t been supportive. He is the weakest link Goodbye!

OneFunGreyFish · Yesterday 13:54

He's just using you as an emotional punch bag because he's shitty about other things but you're the easy target. Men like this get worse and worse. So many angry, shitty little men in the world aren't there?

WorkCleanRepeat · Yesterday 13:55

Yes thats definitely the end. There's no reason to be putting up with that crap.

NeverDropYourMooncup · Yesterday 13:55

It might not, as they are magical, marvellous and utterly contrary creatures, but seeing as whilst you were sure your DD would be horrible to you but she complimented you on your appearance yesterday, it could be that getting this twat out of your lives makes for a far better relationship with her.

After all, if he's been like this to you, what's to say that he hasn't been horrible to her - or been stirring things up to isolate you away from somebody old enough to recognise an utter prick but too young to be able to hide it?

whistlesandbells · Yesterday 13:56

The back and forth now and your determination to “tell him what he has done” is pointless. There is no way to communicate with these kind of men. You will not convince him, he will not change and he will not take responsibility. He is replying now because he knows he went too far, too soon. He is now trying to get you back in a position so he can continue to grind you down. They get pleasure from it.

Leave his stuff outside, bolt the door and block. Focus on you. Decide you don’t want and will not allow someone like that to have access to your life. It’s not a teachable moment for someone like him and it is not your problem to manage.

LolaGold · Yesterday 13:57

It will be interesting to see how your DD responds to the news of your break up. I would watch her actions, facial expressions as much as her words. I am sure she will be pleased to have her Mum back - not the diminishing, preoccupied one who has been around for the last 2 years. I would also tell her that he has been disrespectful and abusive to you and that you took too long to finish it. It will be good role modelling to her.

Is she waiting for GCSE results? Does she have a new college / chapter opening up?

AgathaX · Yesterday 13:58

everynowandthenifallapart · Yesterday 13:32

I know but I need to be able to tell him that he’s been bullying him. However he responds I have to be able to stand up to him and say my piece, I’ve been allowing him to walk all over me for far too long.

You need to stop communicating with him. He doesn't care, it's just annoying you even more. Nothing you say will change him or the situation. Cutting him off mid flow will piss him off as he won't get to whine further.

Italiangreyhound · Yesterday 13:58

Please be careful when he comes round.

You don't need to justify finishing it.

IMHO he is not going to suddenly realise he was in the wrong.

godmum56 · Yesterday 14:00

"descalate" "initiate apologies"? Why are you even letting him into your house?

Ahwelltoobad · Yesterday 14:04

Good luck now (with the tool picking up his tools), and well done for not letting his mood ruin things anymore!

cabus · Yesterday 14:07

You're playing with fire OP. If you really want it to be over you need to stop supplying him with what he wants.....attention.

LolaGold · Yesterday 14:08

Communicating with him is like handing him the bullets to shoot you with. It’s self sabotage. He will twist and DARVO everything to hurt you. You will look desperate showing any emotion and he will sniff that vulnerability to exploit and get a punishing dig in.

Be indifferent, distant, detached. Look to your own inner life for solace, support and strength. There are no answers with him.

Scared0112 · Yesterday 14:09

the argument is such a red herring. You argue. He says things to hurt you. He told you off for how you dressed on your own birthday AND he sparks up an argument after an hour of watching telly together out of the blue?

this man does not like you. Don’t like living with a salty teenager make a dickhead of a man seem like a nice option. Teens can be twats but that man? A lifetime of unhappiness awaits.

FinallyHere · Yesterday 14:10

anyone whose first reaction to seeing you look dressed up is to be angry that he is not dressed up doesn’t deserve to be in your life.

The rest isn’t good, too, but this really stands out for me.
