Should we tolerate this in the UK?

I am aware that other cultures have different values and traditions, but should we really be tolerating this sort of behaviour in the UK?

https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16199187/Exposed-British-imams-telling-men-beat-wives-say-NO-sex-police-ministers-failing-crack-them.html

Yet it seems that certain political parties are willing to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing so that they can secure votes from a certain section of the electorate who often vote as a family unit.

I really thought we had moved on from this sort of thing in the West, but disappointingly it seems I am sadly mistaken.

British imams telling men to beat their wives if they say NO to sex

Sitting before his many followers, a preacher dressed in white urges the men to hit their wives if they refuse to be 'called to bed for intimacy'.

My main point wasn’t about having to choose what’s more worrying.
You said in you pp:

There is also a massive difference between calling out the behaviour of one man who belongs to a community (which I whole heartedly do, he's a disgrace) and extrapolating from that that he is a typical representative of his community.

And my point was that it wasn’t only one man the article was talking about, but several.

So its four then. Three from the same mosque and another from a community centre in Birmingham. And that's 'scores' according to that article. Meanwhile every Muslim body states coercion, control and domestic violence is haram. But, y'know there's a bloke in Bordesley Green saying...
Like I say, I'm genuinely tired of it. The comments were awful. We can agree on that.

You started the thread! Are you saying that it's specifically an issue with Muslims or brown people then? Are you not tarring them with the same brush?

It's a male violence and male entitlement issue.

I think OP is making the point that it’s been reported an Imam is telling his followers, who are also men, that’s it ok to beat your wife for a number of reasons.

This.

It's not about brown people, it's about an Imam who is telling his followers it's ok to beat your wife for a number of reasons......Muslims can be black or white or dual heritage, it's nothing to do with race so the racism card doesn't work. It's about someone in authority/power saying it's ok to beat your wife. It really isn't on.We aren't a developing country and we should uphold lawful practice and this Imam should be widely and soundly condemmed,

MrsPernicious · 13/10/2026 13:33

After the 2024 Southport riots, it later transpired that 41% of the nearly 900 arrested had been reported for crimes associated with intimate partner violence; one police force had that figure as high as 68%.
Nobody has ever preached to these Christian crusaders because they were last in church for Harvest festival in Y6.

Two in five arrested for last summer’s UK riots had been reported for domestic abuse

Police data indicates overlaps between public violent disorder and domestic violence and abuse

Lots of people are also missing the fact that he and the others are preaching that to community where are lots of already vulnerable women who don't know how and where and if they could get help.
These men could not say tjis that even in Saudi, UAE etc.

PhilomenaFitzFilopardi · 13/10/2026 13:42

This endless reference to ‘brown’ people is tedious and puerile.

Again another example of religion over state, keep saying it. Doesn't matter what religion.....state comes first. We have rules on equality and that means those trump religious beliefs or in this case one man's interpretation of it.

He should be arrested and charged under the equalities act.

Yes, and the fact that he isn't arrested and charged is quite telling. Authorities are running scared of the more fundamentalist forms of Islam while they're quite happy to arrest other people for online comments and thoughtcrime.

Justinthekitchen · 11/10/2026 21:41

So are you REALLY trying to suggest that because white British men also occasionally commit acts of domestic violence, we shouldn't be overly concerned about these religious leaders condoning and promoting this sort of thing in there own communities?

Why do you call it occasional when it's white men, but you suggest all foreign (sorry is it just the Muslims or the brown ones?) men do it?

You are being very open about your biases and they are tawdry, ignorant and you should be ashamed of yourself

Stop reading the daily mail for a start, it is poisoning your already entrenched racism further.

Everyone should be treated the same. I honestly think if a white Christian preacher was broadcasting this crxp, he'd get a visit from Plod at the very least.

Instead he's allowed to carry on with impunity. It's double standards.

I broadly think the daily mail is stoking people's prejudices.

The story says one imam and so readers like the OP then extrapolate and claim they are all like it.

It wasn't just one Imam though.

The issue is that UK allows these prople to say and preach what they wouldn't be allowed to even in most of Middle East. Sermons are tightly checked to make sure no extremist preaching is happening.
We don't even have Muslim Brotherhood as proscribed organisation here. UAE has even designated some UK orgs as terrorist ones and cut funding to study in UK because of the possible influence of Muslim Brotherhood.

We need to talk about why we are allowing extremist and harmful views by anyone. No matter what religion, ethnicity or sex they are.

Yes, I agree. All communities should be treated the same. If we handle one community with kid gloves out of fear, we risk stoking resentment and giving that community the impression they can act however they want and everyone will turn a blind eye. I think this is what happened with the grooming gangs scandal.

If you read the article it is just one they give detail on and they dlthen stoke your hatred with vague lines about this happening up and down the country and Sharia law.

Please stop reading the daily mail they know exactly how to manipulate you.

Point in my posts exactly parts which suggest "my hatred" or where I suggested all muslims are bad or whatever the bad eggs bit means.

It was you jumping to agree that the article was about many imams when you clearly haven't read it

But sure maybe you are being balanced about us Brits letting "these people" (your words) in. But I apologise if I misread you.

I didn't agree the article "was about many imams". I said "he isn't the only one though" . Which anyone who checks if information they are reading is not complete bs would spot while doing quick google. I put my hands up and admit I could have clarify that sentence.

"these people" as in these people who believe in and preach these things. 🤷

Coffeeeecups · 15/10/2026 11:43

I also didn't say anything about letting people in. I talked about letting people preach this.

TwoTigers · 15/10/2026 11:51

No, we should tolerate from anyone of any culture/colour. It's abuse/attack and if someone is doing this to another person, I'd be worried about what else they do/how they treat them in general.

The story doesn’t say one imam, there are four or five quoted in this article alone.

dwordle · 15/10/2026 20:07

There's is nothing in Islam that says you should beat your wife. A few hundred years ago we would do the same in this country and use religion as the motive.

Fact is people interpret religious doctrine to meet their own needs but our laws have moved on and in this country woman have equal rights as men.

It's criminal offense to commit acts of violence and to incite them. It's also a civil matter to enforce equal rights act because sex is a protected characteristic.

So arrest him, close the place of worship and sell the property to pay for the cost of it all.
