Did anyone watch her on bbc question time? She was spouting so much hatred. She is trying to rip apart this country. Divide and conquer. Honestly it’s really upsetting. I hate that our young people are watching this play out.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. There is no English ethnicity, we are a nation of immigrants and our language is German. We aren't even indigenous to these bloomin Islands for goodness sake!

Our language is not German. 1066 added thousands of words as did Latin via the church etc. I could go on but it will fall on deaf ears which accompany closed minds.

Araminta1004 · 08/10/2026 09:08

My bad, and there I was thinking there is an exact gene or chromosome that evidences that I am English!
What a pile of absolute tosh. There is no factual basis as even those who can trace our supposed ancestry back hundreds of years are mixed.

Araminta1004 · 08/10/2026 09:12

I really have to say that I can just feel that I must have some Huguenot blood. I haven’t checked, but it is just an extremely strong feeling I have. For all I know one of my ancestors must have had an affair and covered it up!

You tell me what the definition of ethnically English is?

How does that help you answer the question of what difference you see between British (plausible ethnicity) and English (not a plausible ethnicity)?

Only you can answer that becuase it’s a question about your opinion.

I’d say the more cohesive a grouping one can draw around stable ancestry, shared history and identity, the stronger the claim to be an ethnicity.

You seemed to be sceptical of English on ancestry grounds (too mixed). But adding Scots, Welsh and Irish into the grouping makes the ancestry more mixed, and is a much newer grouping historically and in terms of identity.

So we obviously have a quite different idea of what an ethnicity is, and that’s what I was curious about.

Araminta1004 · 08/10/2026 09:16

Look everyone unless your DNA test proves to the authorities you are at least 25% Celtic, sorry you ain’t English enough. Is that what people want? It is complete and utter nonsense all round.

How far do you want to go back Savage? I can trace my family back nearly 300yrs in Scotland!

LadyUrsula · 08/10/2026 09:18

Pineneedlesincarpet · 08/10/2026 09:01

The Picts and Scots of course 🤣

So would your ethnically Scottish person have purely those ancient ancestors or is it more likely that in the 21st Century they have a mixture of ethnicities from the British Isles and Northern Europe?

What is your definition of English ethnicity as opposed to British?

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 08/10/2026 09:20

Isn't it quite simple, your ethnicity can be different to your nationality? Facts aren't racist.

Araminta1004 · 08/10/2026 09:24

It is not just about tracing your family through records though. Plenty of people had affairs and passed kids off as their spouses, all throughout the ages.

GeneralPeter · 08/10/2026 09:28

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 08/10/2026 09:20

This is what I think. The trouble with English is we have the same word for both ideas.

In order to defend a civic (colour blind) conception of English nationality it’s not necessary to deny the coherence of English ethnicity. They are totally compatible views.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 08/10/2026 09:29

I'm not sure why people are so het up.

Your ethnicity is your DNA
Your nationality is what's on your passport(s)
You can feel however you like

Every ancestor from 300 years ago was born in Scotland? That's a lot of people.

So if a black person came to Scotland 300 years ago and married another black person and their children and grandchildren married black people in Scotland for the next 300 years, would all their descendants be ethnically Scottish by now?

EasternStandard · 08/10/2026 09:36

I didn’t watch it but looking it up she said how she felt about her identity. She says she’s a person of Asian origin not English.

Why can’t she feel as she does about that?

She can but then she applies that to other people which again she's free to do but not free from being challenged on her ideas and motivation.

(I don't think that extends to her being a disgrace to humanity, but she certainly doesn't seem like a nice person or effective polician)

Absolutely. I also think anyone with a British accent whether it be Scottish/Welsh/English is of that country, regardless of colour.

Dollymylove · 08/10/2026 09:52

People should listen to the Blue Mink song "Melting pot"
Although since it mentions a white man its probably deemed racist these days

CurlewKate · 08/10/2026 09:56

Oh look. Here come the ethno-nationalists. AKA-racists.

Greenseawitch · 08/10/2026 09:57

She is a disgrace like all Reform politicians and far right nutters.

She is an example of someone who has internalised xenophobia and racism and somehow thinks that if she acts like she openly despises people who actually look like her then she will be accepted by the type of people who vote Reform as one of their own.

Sad that someone could show such self hatred and also be naive enough to think that the people she is trying to appeal to will ever see her as anything other than someone from an immigrant background and 'less than'.

White English people are a mixture of Norman, German, Vikings, Celts Roman and so on. So quite a few of their ancestors came on 'small boats' themselves...

Does she? The quote look like it applied to how she feels.

I think it’s important she gets to say she feels Asian not English without rancour.

They are disgusting aren't they? I don't normally agree with disinformation but when its for the good of society I think it can be justified. Perhaps it is time for the government to engineer some data that shows Anglo-Saxons were actually a multicultural society that included many black people among them and then teach these facts in school. Shut all this 'indigenous' rhetoric down from the source.

I just find the outrage over this so very odd, and I really am no Suella fan. I am not ethnically English and would find it absurd and tbh dismissive of my real ethnic origins if anyone suggested I was ethnically English. As though my living in England erases the blood of my ancestors. I wasn’t even born in this country, though I’ve been here since a young child and do have citizenship. I’d describe myself as English if someone asked where I was from, yes. I feel culturally really quite English, especially compared to extended family back in my country of origin. But my DNA has no connection to the British isles whatsoever. I’m not sure why anyone would be bothered by this - it’s just factually correct.

People describe Britain as an island of immigrants or as JRM said a “mongrel” people, but that’s true of, I would argue, most countries across the world. The fact is that ethnically British people share similar DNA when analysed - including the very fact that this dna reflects various migrations to Britain.

The topic of DNA and its origins is important to me because my ethnicity is Romani. If you tested my DNA for ethnic origins, there is no “Romani” gene. However, my DNA would show origins from Asia and Europe that when looked at as a whole betrays me as a Romani gypsy. I would wholeheartedly object to the idea that my ethnicity doesn’t exist just because there is no specific “Romani” gene. I cannot see why it is different for ethnically English people - there are patterns of specific ancestral origins that could reveal you to be English if analysed.

I also find it a bit odd because if you say there is no English ethnicity, you are saying that ethnically English people have no ethnicity. But I, an English person of foreign ethnicity, most certainly do have an ethnicity which I’m proud of. Are you saying my ethnicity doesn’t exist either? Or are you just saying you are the default, neutral human and us ethnics are different flavours of exotic English?

I am English in attitude and nationality, England is my home. I’m proud and supremely grateful to be able to call myself English. I don’t feel my ethnicity makes me any less English in any meaningful way. I don’t feel remotely threatened by ethnically English people correctly acknowledging themselves as ethnically English.

I was going to reply to this thread, but @Comeondoreen has said everything far more eloquently than I would have done.

Great post.

As white English people become a minority in 40 years they are bound to start to identify themselves more as a group and to think more about ethnic identity.
It was never necessary before as it was taken for granted that England would be a Christian heritage Anglo Saxon country.
Other groups such as the Jewish community and the Muslim community collectively fight for their own ethnic identity, the issues that affect them are addressed as a collective and this is why it is becoming more of an issue now as identity is becoming more relevant.

You should look at the school stats that are available.

Our language is a mixture which is why we have two words for many things. We are descended from the original peoples plus any number of invasions from the Romans and the Vikings to various European nations, and movements of people coming to live and work here. Making being English sound like some cohesive race is pretty delusional really.

pointythings · 08/10/2026 10:53

I think the current obsession with ethnicity and skin colour is divisive and achieves nothing positive at all. You have to ask who benefits from stoking it? Because it isn't ordinary people who just want to live their lives.
