Some good news to start the week!
The mainstream media might be quiet about it, but the numbers donโ€™t lie: Reform UK just lost SIX by-elections in a single week.

Their momentum is officially hitting a wall. On Thursday, they failed to win across the UK and even lost the incumbent seats they were supposed to defend:

  • Amble Ward (Northumberland) โ€” LOST (Gained by Labour)
  • Hirst Ward (Northumberland) โ€” LOST (Reclaimed by Labour)
  • Claremont Ward (Blackpool) โ€” LOST (Held by Labour)
  • Long Whatton & Diseworth Ward (NW Leicestershire) โ€” LOST (Held by Conservatives)
  • Wick & East Caithness Ward (Highland) โ€” LOST (Stormed by Lib Dems)
  • Forth & Endrick Ward (Stirling) โ€” LOST (Held by Conservatives) about:blank 1, 2]

The right-wing vote is splitting down the middle, squeezing them out in low-turnout battles. Proof that real, local communities are seeing through the rhetoric.

Keep it up lads! ๐Ÿ™Œ

But this is a thread about Reform ...

Pineneedlesincarpet · 18/10/2026 11:00

Not at all. I would really rather like high standards of honesty and integrity in our politicians. Something that has been sorely lacking on all sides. I have never committed a crime or embezzled anyone or committed fraud or breach of trust and I don't see why we allow and promote people who do to the highest office.

I think a conviction should rule you out for being an MP. Like it does for a lot of other professions.

So you donโ€™t think we should have rehabilitation of offenders and no crimes should ever be spent? Haighโ€™s crime is spent which means the slate has been wiped. Spent crimes donโ€™t appear on DBS checks, by the way.

Yes and that issue was covered thoroughly and comprehensively at the start of the thread. We could carry on repeating the same thing of course but that would be boring. Why can't we have some balance?

Pineneedlesincarpet · 18/10/2026 10:48

No you would be wrong on that. As I said, I find threads only slagging off one side very boring.

If that's the case, then why are you only attacking Labour?

TopPocketFind · 18/10/2026 11:08

Pineneedlesincarpet · 18/10/2026 10:57

Well you were the one who suggested bringing up the wrong doings of members in other parties. I was just agreeing with you. And now youve changed your mind.

I havent actually brought up bad things about other parties until another PP did which I agree with at is points out the hypocrisy on this thread. During your one sided highly moralistic slagging off of Reform I just tried to encourage us to consider why they were so popular. And to point out that many people speak the same was as Reform members and won't care about any disapproval.

Apologies, you are just saying we shouldn't criticise Reform because of other parties and then bring up a few Labour examples.

Bad apples in all parties is your defence.

No I think you cannot have a convicted criminal making laws. I just don't. I mean obviously you clearly can as she's in the Cabinet. But no. Most people can get through life without a criminal conviction.

I don't need to defend myself I don't think?

Im perfectly happy for us to criticise Reform. Its been done for pages and pages on this thread. But can't we expand the focus? Or do we need to repeat the same old views again and again.

EEexpat · 18/10/2026 11:11

@Pineneedlesincarpet

Theres no use just focusing on one party and not allowing comment about all the other. Isn't the hope that all politicians be held to the same high standard.

Yes. However, the general theme of MN regards Brexit seems to be if they block any views they do not align with their own, it proves the entire country has the same view.

Which views of the latest revelations about Reform councillors do you align with?

My impression of the "far right" (so thats the National Front or BNP or ADF) is that "hurt feelings" don't really bother them.

Your definition of far right is different from mine. But that's OK.

Start your own thread then for balance. Your posts are observed as hijacking a thread.

Anyway I look forward to discussing the ITV documentary that's going to be aired tonight. The post discussion should be good, do you not agree?

Then there was the Labour appointed anti-corruption minister Tulip Siddiq who had to resign last year after getting charged, and now convicted and sentenced to four years in prison on corruption charges by a court in Bangladesh.

Seriously, where does Labour dig up these utter dregs of people from, and why on earth are they even allowed anywhere near positions of power in Bangladesh where they are from, let alone here in the UK.

Would you, following this logic, go on to one of my Low Carb Bootcamp threads and start talking about Slimming World or Weight Watcher diets?

Everyone knows that ITV has an agenda, and that anything presented will neither be fair, representative or proportional.

pointythings · 18/10/2026 11:15

I just think we need to be careful to use descriptions and words carefully otherwise they loose their power. Eg racisim and Nazi and far right. Those words have been used too often to describe things and people that aren't those things. So now a lot of people don't care if they are called a Nazi. Which isn't great.

A lot of people who do not mind being called Nazi are actually Nazis, sympathising with Hitler, having Nazi views, doing the Nazi salute, dressing up like Nazis.

The word does not lose its power.

Really? Whatโ€™s the agenda? Itโ€™s difficult to be unfair to people filmed saying abhorrent things.

BIossomtoes · 18/10/2026 11:19

There's a difference. Rehabilitation of criminals, spent convictions etc. Thats fine.

Convicted criminals in certain professions is not so fine. Eg the law, police etc. You can get in sometimes but only in certain circumstances.

Law making is something that I personally think a convicted criminal should never been involved in. But thats just my opinion and Andy Burnham doesnt agree. So I can just scuttle back in my box as all us plebs must do.
