This journalist admits that his reporting from Gaza was not accurate because he was afraid of retaliation from Hamas.
Why have so many believed every report from Gaza journalists?

Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza

The saying “truth is the first casualty of war” refers to the governments and their leaders that have decided to wage war on each other, or one on the other. Journalists are the counter to this as they are not personally invested in winning or losing a war.

I think the phrase can apply also here since this journalist has spoken about the pressure of being a journalist under a Hamas authority.

What is not true about the statement that the only reason Gaza is poor is because billions of dollars have been misspent on building tunnels and siphoned off by Hamas. Or that Hamas is actually extremely well off?

The part that is untrue is “only reason”
There are many more reasons why

But if those billions in aid had not been misappropriated by Hamas , Gaza would not be poor …

I don’t think I can agree given that you obviously did not post the truth about the journalist in the first place.

OnePeppyFatball · Yesterday 10:32

What propaganda are you talking about then? The numbers dead is thought to be underestimated rather than over. The devastation wrecked in Gaza is clear for everyone with eyes to see. There is a lack of aid, medicine, food being allowed in, again verified by the number of trucks crossing Rafa compared to pre war. What propaganda do you think Hamas has been peddling?

I posted his actual words.
He has since backtracked. But I did post a link to several accounts of his interview on a podcast .
To say I didn’t post the truth is unfair. Either he lied in the podcast or he lied later ( from fear of reprisals)

I disagree. It’s more complex. Getting aid that you then can’t use to import not even enough building materials to keep up repairs or medical equipment to treat cancer or even equipment for a proper power generation infrastructure or safe water supply and sewage treatment. Getting aid that is used to set up a fruit and veg growing industry or soda bottling or other small manufacturing that is then strangled by Israel refusing to allow any exports to leave Gaza.

The economic impacts of the blockade I would say have more impact on the poverty than Hamas siphoning off aid for Iranian weapons.

The narrative that the Hamas are plucky freedom fighters pushing back against an evil Israel.
In fact they are funded by Iran and have milked the Palestinians dry by siphoning off billions of aid meant for the Palestinians.

I don’t think he lied, I think what you posted were snippets taken out of context from a podcast so the version you got was second hand and not his actual words in full.

You didn’t post the truth, which doesn’t mean I am saying you deliberately lied.
I think you just didn’t check your sources as the first responder pointed out.

Can we just go back to this as I think it’s important.
You challenged me about my claim that the pro Pal marches etc seemed all set up and ready to go in the immediate aftermath of October 7th .
Why were people demonstrating AGAINST Israel in the days after October 7th?

Were you one of those people ?

I copied the following from AI

“Pro-Palestinian protests related to the current conflict started immediately on October 7, 2023, the same day Hamas launched its attack on Israel and the Gaza war began.

Timeline of the Protests

  • October 7–8, 2023: Initial rallies and demonstrations emerged worldwide and across major U.S. cities (such as New York City) within hours of the outbreak of hostilities.
  • Late October 2023:
  • Demonstrations rapidly grew in frequency and size globally as Israel's military response in Gaza intensified.

@LoremIpsumCici

No one from the pro Pal side has explained to me why the Pro Pal/ anti Israeli protests started the day after October 7th. Was it to distract attention from the horror of October 7th?

The initial protests were started by already established pro Palestinian groups who had experience in organising protests. I believe they anticipated that Israel's response was going to be totally brutal and they were hoping to encourage an immediate ceasefire to resolve the situation. The initial marches were small, only a few hundred protestors. They didn't explode into the massive protests we saw until the end of October.

Local journalists are less free than independent journalists would be, so yes we need to take reports with a grain of salt. Which begs the question why has Israel blocked access to independent journalists? That one thing would allow much more reliable reports.

In regards to Motaz Azaiza he criticised Hamas even in social media posts such as this one on his X (Twitter) and Instagram accounts, Azaiza wrote: "Those who turn a blind eye to the suffering and struggles of their own people should matter nought to us. Cursed be those who profit from our blood, scorch our hearts and homes, and wreck our lives."

Too, if he had been linked to Hamas, Israel would never have let him leave Gaza.

It is possible to be both. They may be brutal tyrannical terrorists who are also fighting a brutal and oppressive occupation. No matter how despicable a person Sinwar was, you cannot deny that he died like a warrior, defiant to the end.

I don’t think he was linked to Hamas . He said he couldn’t publish photos of the beatings received by Israeli hostages because it would identify Hamas members.
In other words - he could not report freely . Which is totally understandable in the circs.

I wouldn’t choose to glorify him.

Not my conspiracy theory. Take it up with Avi Shlaim and the Mossad agents he not only names but interviews in the book.

It’s hard to say what you are looking for. First, protests can be spontaneous. They don’t require pre planning to do. Secondly, protests spanned the globe so I can hardly comment on which protests were actually for peace and against war between Israel and Hamas, versus which were abhorrent antisemitic celebrations of Hamas massacring innocent Jewish people, versus which were protests in solidarity with Israel using maximum firepower on the cities of Gaza.

I know I was personally at a candle lit vigil for the victims of Oct 7th the evening of Oct 9th which also included the Oseh Shalom- prayer for peace. Would you consider that an antiIsrael/ProPal “protest” because we even then were aghast at the nonstop bombing of Gaza and declarations of war? Disgusted by Yoav Gallant declaring a complete siege of no food, no water, no power for ‘human animals’ when a million of these ‘human animals’ were innocent children?

Gosh - they organised the protest immediately after October 7th ( had someone told them beforehand?)
Because they “anticipated “ the Israeli backlash!

Wow!! Could it be that this was Hamas plan all along? Commit the most terrible atrocities and kidnap women and children so that Israeli is forced to respond harshly… but immediately get your propaganda machine in place so that the focus is on “anticipating “ the Israeli reaction ( rather than thinking about the hostages)

Remember the tearing down of the hostage posters ? They didn’t matter did they.

No he did not say that. Read what he actually said:

As for the video I filmed of Israeli prisoners held by Hamas, I filmed it inside Gaza while I was working as a journalist. I chose not to publish it because I was afraid that revealing the location would expose the Palestinian civilians in the area to danger. After about twenty minutes, Israeli warplanes targeted the location, resulting in the killing of the prisoners, along with Hamas militants who were present there.

Nothing about protecting the identities of Hamas terrorists. All about protecting civilians and the hostages.

But I think this raises the issue of whether it is even possible to be an independent journalist in Gaza when Hamas is the ruling authority.

Maybe if Israel would allow international journalists into Gaza, there would be more clarity.

So my Rabbi is secretly working for Hamas because she organised a vigil immediately after Oct 7 th?

You’re going into conspiracy theory land here. Protests, vigils, marches, demonstrations etc can and do pop up in response to significant, traumatic world events.
