This journalist admits that his reporting from Gaza was not accurate because he was afraid of retaliation from Hamas.
Why have so many believed every report from Gaza journalists?

Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza

But you have no idea what’s happening. No one does. Because Israel won’t
et any independent journalists in. At least Motaz hasn’t been killed by Hamas or the IDF. Yet.

Yes I agree.
The issue is about what is true.
I feel that it would be very difficult to survive as a journalist in Gaza without being willing to present a Hamas narrative.

They're more likely to be killed by Israel

Easily remedied. Israeli opens the borders. International impartial press allowed in. Sorted.

Sorted ?
So no chance of Hamas managing to control the narrative with the “international impartial press” ?
As they say “Truth is the first casualty of war”

This is not true, there is loads of media coming out of Gaza. Its all problematic in one way or another but the idea that there os complete radio silence is absurd.

OnePeppyFatball · 25/09/2026 18:13

When was the last time you saw a mainstream news report on TV about what is happening in Gaza? You have to look for it. Yet people are still being killed by Israel every single day.

OpheliaWasntMad · 25/09/2026 18:17

My issue isn’t with the journalist ( I can’t imagine the pressure he was working under and I understand why he had to present a narrative that omitted Hamas’ evil .

The trouble is that some (eg pro Pal supporters on here) seem to think that the reporting from Gaza is accurate while the reporting from Israel is unreliable.

I’m not sure that is quite it though Ophelia. Surely you must want to know why Israel won’t let any independent journalists in? Wonder why Israel have heavily targeted and killed journalists in this war? It’s not a case of choosing to believe one side more than the other. There has been an awful amount of propaganda on both sides. However, one side holds the keys to the door, and it ain’t Palestine.

I have wondered why they won’t let journalists in
I guess there are a few possibilities

  1. The Israelis think that Hamas - who have control of the Gazan population - will present a distorted / untrue narrative that will be blindly accepted
  2. The Israelis are not willing to let the world see what is happening in Gaza because it reflects badly on them.

A big part of war is control of the narrative. Israel hasn’t been very successful at that . Hamas has played a blinder. ( in my opinion) ETA - eg this Palestinian journalist was given huge amounts of attention in the west and won awards etc …

I would give the most weight with the medical professionals and their testimonies when returning from Gaza.

Me too.

I would have 💯 agreed but then I learnt about the number of nhs doctors who posted online support for Hamas …
It kind of knocked my confidence in the integrity of their testimony . Maybe unfairly . But one liar makes it hard to trust the next ten honest people.

Antisemitism in the NHS and in NGOs is a huge problem so I see no objective reason to automatically believe the medics who are there, except in the narrowest sense.

Sadly I agree. But most medics ( of whatever creed) are amazing.

I think both things can be true.

-Hamas threatens journalists in Gaza .

-What is happening on the ground is horrific and newsworthy and true.

You’re right these two things could be true.
But it could also be true that Hamas are in control of journalists in Gaza and the west has fell for some of their lies .

Yes, absolutely. I would believe & trust them about what they are doing medically. I have no reason to believe their wider perspective in a political sense.

I wouldn’t be surprised about Hamas controlling what they are able to- but I serious doubt that they controlled everything being sent out on SM at the height of Israeli bombing of Gaza. The photos were horrific.

There are ways of getting reports that are not going to be influenced by Hamas that also suggest war crimes

Medics giving interviews when back in the UK speak of apocalyptic scenes and potential war crimes such as kids being shot in the head. This is not the same as medics glorifying Hamas as posted above. This is one of multiple accounts

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/oct/07/postapocalyptic-uk-volunteer-surgeons-reflect-on-time-in-gaza

Images from Google Earth showing wide spread destruction - download and search for Gaza. See if you can spot a residential area that has buildings that haven’t been damaged / flattened. I’m also not sure when the images were last updated.

The film Naza also suggests AI driven targeting and a callousness towards Palestinian collateral death. The film involves interviews with Israelis.

I am sure Hamas do try and control what they can- but I doubt they can control all of it and there is enough out there to raise significant concerns about what has happened in Gaza.

I thought this was beyond doubt now?

Of course what is happening in Gaza is horrific. I do want Israel’s actions scrutinised.
I have no doubt the Palestinians’ agony is real. I think many of the ordinary people have been caught up in a proxy war between bigger entities.
I just don’t believe the evil Israeli narrative.

I’m not going to say they are lying. I’m sure they have witnessed war crimes ( every conflict has war crimes) And I’m sure some are good and honest people.
I just think there are two competing narratives and both contain truth ( and lies)

Of course there are two competing narratives but the victors no longer control it. SM has been a great equaliser- despite Israel trying to keep out journalists. Even with some reservations about Hamas propaganda - enough is available to cause consternation about what has happened in Gaza.

I am not sure why people are still trying to massage the obvious and cast doubts.

Boolabus · 25/09/2026 20:33

Have these doctors served time in Gaza? I'm not sure what point your trying to make otherwise. There are racists and antisemites in every profession I'm sure. These are terrorist supporters who also happened to be doctors.

When I mentioned medics I'm specifically talking about the testimonies of those who spent time in Gaza and have officially talked about what they witnessed. Is there a reason you think they're lying?

But as we know access to Gaza is tightly restricted for independent international journalists and external observers, making direct, on-the-ground verification of every individual claim difficult.
Pretty convenient for the Israeli government and the IDF.

CJsGoldfish · 25/09/2026 20:35

Three of those links are the same person?

Neither of the 2 drs are returning from, or reporting on their personal experiences in Gaza so why would they influence the credibility of those who have been there?

The inability to publicly criticise Hamas is neither here nor there really.
It doesn’t lesson the atrocities or the impact the suffering has had on those doctors who have been on the ground in Gaza🤷‍♀️
