Opinions on the girl name Alba?

We love Alba for our baby girl.

The only criticism for the name I can imagine, is a likeness to Albert.
However I personally don’t foresee that as an issue.
We love the nickname Allie, as my mother’s name is Alison and she goes by Allie aswell.

Just wanted general opinions to see if there was anything I was missing with the name / any reasons not to use.

Middle name will be Sofia after my grandmother.

other options we still have running are:
Iris
Cassia
Gia
Margot

Not all with middle name Sofia, depending on flow of course.

AL often equals Allie as a nickname

Think having an affectionate name for your child is always nice. Not something I’m forcing people to call her 🤣

It's the Scottish Gaelic tv channel. So I would not choose it for that reason alone.

I'd agree that Alison has seemed dated but I think it could come back. Alicia seems more dated and Ellie too overused.

It's French and Manon, which isn't dissimilar, is very popular on here.

I don't really like Alba as a name. It might be nice in a Spanish accent but Albuh or Al-uh-buh isn't a nice sound.

Al/Allie/Albie would probably evolve from it.

It is popular at present, it isn't a made-up name and I don't think it would raise eyebrows.

But, giving honest feedback, I just can't get excited about this trend for for short, not very pretty-sounding girls names such as Maud, Ada, Alba, Edna. I don't even like Isla.

The first thing it makes me think of is Elba, which is one of the places napoleon was exiled to. The second thing is it sounds to me like elbow said in the sort of accent that drops h: " 'E poked me with 'is sharp elba, 'e did."

But nothing particularly sinister in all that I guess. I just don't know why anyone would get down to Alba as a first choice, but that's taste I guess.

For me, if I wanted Allie, I'd go for the rather beautiful Albertine - but that's probably a niche choice!

I had an Alba as my first ever stereo when I was young!

I was vaguely aware that my older cousins thought it was cheap and nasty, but I thought it was VERY grown-up!

I’m sure this name was in The Time Traveller’s Wife and I loved it then. I think, from memory, Alba means sunrise

It will be a nuisance for her if everyone knows her as Allie but all her official documents say Alba. Just call her Allie if that's the name you like.

It's the Scottish Gaelic for 'Scotland' - like calling a kid Cymru in Wales. Nothing wrong with it - Enfys is a popular name here and it means Rainbow - Seren means Star. But my first thought was Scottish - that said there are plenty of Islas floating about who have no connection with Scotland either. It's a nice name, I know an Alban who is male and his dad is from Slovenia.

It was also the name of a short-lived political party in Scotland led by Alex Salmond at the start of this decade that fizzled out in a financial crisis shortly after his death. Salmond had various sexual harrassment claims made against him and the party's politics were a weird mix of social conservatives and nationalist fundamentalists. For that reason it would be a no from me, but this association may be less relevant outside of Scotland.
