We are due our second boy in November. Finding it tricky to pick a boys name!

We have discussed Cooper as one option. What is everyone’s opinion of this name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It's a bit dated and not in a cute, vintage way (imo).

Notalertedtoday · 08/09/2025 20:31

I know a Cooper in primary school. It’s a lovely name for a lovely boy, not chavvy but distinguished imo.

OhNoNotSusan · 08/09/2025 20:33

i also dont like surnames as first names
can get so confusing in my line of work
and can be quite dangerous i would have though
especially if your surname is Thomas or a similar name that could be a first name and surname.

I don’t like it sorry, not keen on the “surnames as first names” thing, sounds too American

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/09/2025 20:44

I know an adorable Cooper.

I'm not a fan of surnames as first names. I only know of dogs called Cooper so it's a no from me.

Same here. A relative has just got a puppy and named their dog Cooper. Then, there's this -

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 08/09/2025 20:49

I know a little Cooper.

SnowFrogJelly · 08/09/2025 20:49

Awful

I don’t like ‘craft’/job names as first names — like Hunter, Cooper etc.

Same. It always feels like the parents are assigning their child a job.

A cooper makes barrels. It’s an occupation. You wouldn’t call a child ‘Accountant’ or ‘Fireman’ would you? 🤷🏻‍♀️

‘Hunt!’

’Make barrels!’

’Thatch houses!’

(I met an American Thatcher.)

cupfinalchaos · 08/09/2025 21:20

I also think it’s chavvy and really not a nice name.. sorry.

Katherineryan1986 · 08/09/2025 21:22

Not a fan for a child because I know of 3 dogs called Cooper, to me it’s a dog’s name -sorry.

Bananachimp · 08/09/2025 21:38

Kids will almost definitely call him pooper cooper. Or cooper the pooper
Also my neighbours cat was called cooper so it's a no from me😂

Poonu · 08/09/2025 21:39

I only know girls called cooper

cobrakaieaglefang · 08/09/2025 21:43

Is he a cocker spaniel with silky floppy ears, if not, then its a no from me..😂

deckchairmayhem · 08/09/2025 21:46

Cooper is a surname, isn't it?
Sorry I don't think it works for a first name.
Names that have been derived from professions ( or what a person does) like Archer or Hunter are quite cool, but you know that a cooper used to be a person who made chicken coops/cages, in the past.
Not too elegant 😭

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/09/2025 21:53

I’m not too keen on Cooper myself but Im
sure if I met a boy called Cooper it would soon grow on me.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/09/2025 21:54

DH’s surname is Cooper and he confirms that he has never been called Pooper.

SirChenjins · 08/09/2025 21:56

I don't like it - has a touch of the Kayden about it.

RuthW · 08/09/2025 21:56

just no for a human……just about ok for a dog.

It's still awful as a first name though!

hattie43 · 08/09/2025 22:05

Cooper is the name of a Labrador

Gentlydoesit2 · 08/09/2025 22:10

I have friend who's dog is called cooper, and another who's daughter is called cooper. Not for me I'm afraid

newroundhere · 08/09/2025 22:30

Just makes me think of a Mini Cooper
