Cooper for a boy

We are due our second boy in November. Finding it tricky to pick a boys name!

We have discussed Cooper as one option. What is everyone’s opinion of this name?

I don't like it. It's bland. There are much nicer names out there, with character.

Cooper, if it goes with your last name is fine it's quite nice for an adult but unfortunately even adults get diminutives/ nicknames and your Dss will most definitely be Coop, which unfortunately during school days, some kids might have a lot of fun with, at your DSs expense.

I know a 3 year old one, no-one seems to have any issues with his name - a lot of the boys seem to have “surname style” first names, either that or a short 2 syllable one that ends in O (those seem to be the two big trends in nursery, apart from the usual “ee” ending nickname-names that have been around for ages). Cooper is not my personal taste as I prefer the traditional classics, but there’s nothing wrong with it.

I love it. Cool, not too try-hard, easy to spell. He’s get Coop as a NN, but that’s no biggie.

I like Cooper, if you like it go for it! Those kind of names are popular now and in 50 years it will be normal for a 60yr old man to be called Hunter etc

I find that if your not calling your child traditional names like Alice or Christopher (nn Kit 🤣) or something like Caspian Barnabas or Araminta Genevieve MN will hate it

I know a lovely Cooper. I think it is more accepted in Scotland than England weirdly. Because in Scotland we use a lot of surnames as first names as family naming traditions.

😂 tbf I’ve seen it mentioned a lot on here but so far none at the nursery and school I visit regularly. Maybe in a couple of years there’ll be an influx.

They are not cool. Archer means someone who shoots with a bow and arrow, and Hunter means someone who hunts animals

Your nn Kit rhymes with Shit - come one ladies really.. pooper?? Are we 6 or something? Many names rhyme with something daft if we put our childish thought behind it.

OP if you like it, go for it. It’s not too out there and not one of the overly used names at present (Kit and Raffy is offered on most boy name threads these days for example)

I'm another who doesn't like surnames used as first names.

On the positive side, it is easy to pronounce if you see it written down and easy to spell if it is told to you verbally, but I agree with pps saying it gets very confusing when you work with lists / databases of interchangeable names.

DH’s surname is Cooper and he confirms that he has never been called Pooper.

It's still awful as a first name though!

Sorry I don't think it works for a first name.
Names that have been derived from professions ( or what a person does) like Archer or Hunter are quite cool, but you know that a cooper used to be a person who made chicken coops/cages, in the past.
