Bird names

Morning, trying to work out if this is a good idea or if baby brain is sending me actually crazy haha.

I have a DS named Wren. We're now expecting #2, and there's a name I just can't get out my head. I've never heard anyone in our lives called this, but I'm worried that's because it's not a real name haha.

I absolutely love the idea of naming this little one Sparrow. Tell me (gently haha) if I'm mad, but I just love it.

DH loves Robin, but I already know of two Robin's.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
JustCuttinAboot · 10/02/2025 21:21

Sparrow is awful.

Robin is fab.

JustCuttinAboot · 10/02/2025 21:29

Boy:
Robin lovely
Evan lovely
Forrest makes me think of Gump
Copper love the word, but not as a name
Wander (not sure?) aeriosly
dislike
Bramble Hard no from me
Girl:
Poppy love
Maple nice word, not a name
Hazel okay
Etta dislike
Olive old lady
Clover fits the nature theme but I think butter
Ember Amber is nicer
Wander hard no
Celeste very different from your other choices.

i think River and Willow match your style

BootballJoy · 10/02/2025 21:42

From DH's list:

Robin - I do love Robin for a boy, although I get the concerns about theming
Evan - nice. I always pair it with Owen for some reason
Forrest - I like it. It does make me think Forrest Gump but that's my age showing!
Copper - where DH is from this would always be a policeman
Wander (not sure?) I'm not sure either!
Bramble - I like it as a word but not sure as a name

We know a little boy called Ray (not short for anything) which is maybe a similar style?

Poppy - too twee for me
Maple - I like it
Hazel - fine
Etta - also fine
Olive - i don't like the word but it's very fashionable
Clover - not a fan
Ember - I like it
Wander - a bit like Wanda/WandaVision
Celeste - not a fan

I'd probably go Evan and Ember as the top options. I do like Mabel from your choices too.

BatchCookBabe · 10/02/2025 21:43

Oh come on @GreeneryGrass 😆 Sparrow! Nooooooooooooooooooo! 😱

admirible · 10/02/2025 21:45

No. Have you got skinny legs. I used to be called sparrow legs at school. Don’t do it.

BatchCookBabe · 10/02/2025 21:46

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 10/02/2025 08:14

Jay.
Peregrine 😆
Falco
Drake
Finch (I like this one)
Martin
Rook
Oriole

No to Oriole. Sounds like Areola (..) 😂

Notthebeard · 10/02/2025 21:58

I love Wren! For a boy or a girl, gorgeous name.

Maybe Sparrow could be a middle name? Or Sparrowhawk?

Whar about Paloma for a girl? It’s Spanish for Dove.

Otherwise, I love Ember and Celeste from your list. What about Lyra?

Boys: Love Robin if you want to stick to the theme. What about Caspian or Walker?

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/02/2025 22:51

Robin - love
Evan - love
Forrest - not my usual taste but ok
Copper - no
Wander (not sure?) - no
Bramble - no
Girl:
Poppy - love
Maple - guilty pleasure name - love bug wouldn’t be brave enough to use!
Hazel - love
Etta - like
Olive - like
Clover - another guilty pleasure name
Ember - like a lot
Wander - no
Celeste - ok

Meadow is a similar one?

I've always thought Linnet was lovely! Not a common bird either so wouldn't be a recognizable link for a lot of people.

Also on the nature theme;
Lyndon
Aster
Ash

Lilac
Aspen
Zinnia

HugoYorway · 11/02/2025 08:12

Linnet is lovely but people will insist on saying it as Lynette, which ruins it.

user2848502016 · 11/02/2025 14:42

Boy:

Robin - nice
Evan - nice
Forrest - ok but I would spell it Forest and people will think Forest Gump (not necessarily bad)
Copper - just no
Wander (not sure?) - no
Bramble - definitely no

Girl:

Poppy - cute
Maple - no, too much like Mabel
Hazel - nice
Etta - nice
Olive - not keen
Clover - rabbit's name
Ember - love it
Wander - no
Celeste - nice

salamithumbs · 14/02/2025 21:04

Boys: I really like Evan, and Robin and Forrest are fine too.. I think Rowan, Ash or Heath are also nice

  • Bramble just sounds too 'children's story book' imo... reminds me of Brambly Hedge, and (kind of a bumblebee as well)

-Copper makes me think of the police, or a coin

-Wander- think this would sound too much like Wanda for a boy, and sounds a bit ... lost? Like someone wandering about in a daze

Girls: I love Hazel, Ember amd Celeste! Etta, Clover and Olive are fine, just not really my cup of tea.. but nothing wrong with them at all.

Poppy sounds a bit silly to my ears and Maple just makes me think of maple syrup!

I also liked the suggestion of Linnet, and I like Robin/Robyn for a girl (less so for a boy but couldn't say why).

I see you've ruled out Sparrow but just wanted to say it made me think of Captain Jack Sparrow rather than a bird!

bridgetreilly · 15/02/2025 19:39

Robin - love it for boy or girl, would probably not pair with Wren
Evan - no
Forrest - yes, but I would just spell it Forest
Copper - not unless you want a lifetime of police jokes
Wander (not sure?) - no
Bramble - good name for a pet, not a child
Girl:
Poppy - fine, but a bit dull
Maple - I know one, and I’ve never liked it
Hazel - okay
Etta - short for Henrietta, not as standalone
Olive - is this really your vibe?
Clover - gorgeous
Ember - dying embers
Wander - no
Celeste - maybe?

Also consider:
Bear
Lindon
Orion

Juniper
Linnet
Tansy

RogueFemale · 19/02/2025 00:46

GreeneryGrass · 10/02/2025 18:54

Right, DH is home from work and we're ready for your opinions on some of his suggestions!

Boy:

Robin
Evan
Forrest
Copper
Wander (not sure?)
Bramble

Girl:

Poppy
Maple
Hazel
Etta
Olive
Clover
Ember
Wander
Celeste

Robin - I've always hated Robin. I love bird robins but not human name Robins, male or female, unisex names rarely a good idea
Evan - Just makes me think of Evans plus size
Forrest - Why not one R?
Copper - Hmm...why?
Wander - Whither?
Bramble - Imagine your adult son having to introduce himself at a business pitch etc. "Hi I'm Bramble Smith", and everyone wondering where to look.

Poppy - 'Sweet'
Maple - Syrup
Hazel - I would really, really hate to be called Hazel
Etta - OKish
Olive - Another name I'm glad isn't mine
Clover - Less OKish than Etta
Ember - Amber is much prettier
Celeste - Seriously?

oakleaffy · 19/02/2025 00:51

Geneticsbunny · 10/02/2025 09:11

Linnet?

The children 👦 of Green Knowe novels featured a Linnet.

Tahcnibor · 19/02/2025 00:56

Serin

GiovJones16 · 22/02/2025 22:37

What about Robin as a middle name so there is the connection but it is a little more subtle?

Does it have to be a bird name? Can you give us some steers on what other types of name you like?

GiovJones16 · 22/02/2025 22:39

What about Laurie (from the Laurel tree) and Wren. Then there is a nature connection

GiovJones16 · 22/02/2025 22:46

Or Wren and Jonah (Jonah meaning "dove")

Ketryne · 22/02/2025 23:45

There was a girl character in one of my favourite children's books called Kestrel, which I always thought was super cool...but I I've never heard of it in real life!

margegunderson · 22/02/2025 23:58

Ptarmigan
Dodo
Albatross
Booby

Of course I haven't read the thread but Christ - your kids will know their parents chose their names by theme. Daft. "Were your parents twitchers? No, they just liked the idea of bird names."

MissBridgetJones · 23/02/2025 13:34

Finch is lovely for a little boy, but also lovely for a teen/man x

1SillySossij · 23/02/2025 13:48

GreeneryGrass · 10/02/2025 09:15

Our little boy is called Wren and it suits him great 😊 thank you for your thoughts x

Maybe not when he is older though. You have forgotten you are not only naming a small child!

StScholastica · 26/02/2025 22:45

Alita means "winged one".
Serin
Siskin
Swift
Or you could go full Latin with "Turdus Turdus" 😊
