Birdie?

Is ‘birdie’ okay for a girl? I’m not too sure on the name extended e.g. birdette but I love it for a baby girl!

My mother thinks it’s a cruel name and that it could subject her to bullying?

Please help!!!!

Is anyone old enough to remember Tottie’s House from the 1980s? I’m still traumatised by what happened to Birdie…

RaininSummer · 21/02/2024 18:20

That is a bad name.

Topseyt123 · 21/02/2024 18:25

Horrendous. Sorry. You've now got me thinking of the Birdie Song and that will now be going through my mind on a loop for hours.🙄🤣

Bridie is much better, although still not really to my taste personally. I do know a Bridie, and I'd admit that it does suit her.

It's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, along with Queenie but I'm not sure that I could ever use either on an actual child! As an adult woman, would you want your name to be Birdie?
Could you use a proper name with nn Birdie? A Google tells me that it's a nickname for Elizabeth apparently.

DD knows a Queenie.. lovely and immensely talented girl but I’ve always felt sorry for her having that name! It always raised eyebrows with anybody new that she met

clipclop5 · 21/02/2024 19:57

It’s pretty but definitely more of a nickname for you to use at home. A PP’s suggestion of using Wren and then Birdie as a nickname is really nice.. maybe Robyn too!

Rocknrolla21 · 21/02/2024 20:00

I’ve got a 60up friend called birdie. She’s got a cafe called birdies cafe :)

wafflingworrier · 21/02/2024 20:02

That is the most ridiculous, hideous girl's name I have ever heard.
You do know she will be a...human, right?

gettingolderbutcooler · 21/02/2024 20:02

Have you watched Kin?

Sauvblanctime · 21/02/2024 20:03

Awful

I think you’re being a bit harsh. Relatively speaking it’s not that bad. Far worse suggestions on here on a daily basis!

lioneggs · 21/02/2024 20:04

Not a fan of birdie but love bridie

wafflingworrier · 21/02/2024 20:04

Penguin?
Giraffe?
Parrot?!

Hahahhaaaaaa

HemlockSoup · 21/02/2024 20:05

Birdie sounds like a character in a Southern gothic novel. Sitting on her porch barefoot, smoking, and reminiscing about being in love with Earl.

Missingmyusername · 21/02/2024 20:05

I’d name a cat Birdie. I’m not a fan sorry.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 21/02/2024 20:08

David and Georgia Tennant have a Birdie.

WildCherryBlossom · 21/02/2024 20:09

I've known two - both were nicknames. One was originally a Bridget and not sure about the other. I quite like it as a nickname.

Cathbrownlow · 21/02/2024 20:10

I like it!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/02/2024 20:12

It’s not a name I would want or use. Fine as a nickname and I’ve heard it used as a nickname for Bernadette.

Cantalever · 21/02/2024 20:13

Awful name, except as a nickname. It sounds trivial, as though she is not to be taken seriously.

User373433 · 21/02/2024 20:15

I know one, a toddler. I was a bit surprised at first as I'd never come across it before, but very quickly got used to it as any other name.

HuntingoftheSnark · 21/02/2024 20:18

She's a doll in Rumer Godden's The Dolls' House. I loved that book and the name suited her - she was flighty and rattled when you shook her, as she had a bead in her head. Not great for a real person though.

Samzzz · 21/02/2024 20:21

I like it! Non mainstream names don’t get good feedback on here.

Roselilly36 · 21/02/2024 20:22

Just makes me think of golf, tbh.

IggyAce · 21/02/2024 20:25

I initially thought you’d done a typo and the name was meant to be Bridie.

Wren Or Lark with the nn birdie could work.
