Birdie?

Is ‘birdie’ okay for a girl? I’m not too sure on the name extended e.g. birdette but I love it for a baby girl!

My mother thinks it’s a cruel name and that it could subject her to bullying?

Please help!!!!

I love it

LemonTreeGrove · 01/04/2024 12:11

I like it as a nickname. I think Noel Fielding has a wife known as Birdie as its her surname

I know this is a month old, but I just wanted to say that Birdie is a popular nickname used in Scotland and Ireland for women who are called Elizabeth and Bridget. I happen to be one and have never had any hassle about my name, in fact I’m always told how much everyone loves it :-) I’m 39 btw - I’ve never met another Birdie younger than me. I say go for it.

Oh, and I’m a primary school teacher and using this name has never stopped my career. People are really stuck in their ways on here and it is not a reflection on the real world thankfully.

I used to read a parenting blog years ago where the daughter's nickname was Birdie. It was all very sweet, but it was only a nickname.

Birdie is the name of a really creepy character in a Lisa Jewell novel.

Axx · 22/03/2024 07:47

Listen to your mum!

My advice is think about that cute baby applying for good job? Think about them being in a profession with clients and business cards ... would you choose a solicitor called Birdie? Your GP? Kee nicknames as those and give proper first names so the child has a choice when grown.

Before you think this is far fetched, I've worked in hr and we really did filter the hundreds of applicants by name, too silly or childlike and my boss stuck them through the shedder.

Why would my solicitors name matter? Or my doctor? My oncology surgeon is called Fable. It has no bearing on her skills as a surgeon.

RogueFemale · 22/03/2024 02:06

Just makes me think of Peter Sellers and Birdie Num Num.

oneinamillieon · 21/03/2024 21:33

i don't really like it. it's a very "granny" name and she will probably get bullied.
if you're set on birds, maybe robin or ava?

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/03/2024 21:14

It's terrible!!!

Hoxite274764 · 29/02/2024 15:27

Just no

Samzzz · 29/02/2024 15:24

I think people would get use to Birdie but Birdie Betts does not sound good! Sorry

Ellmau · 29/02/2024 08:16

It's a bit twee, and Birdette is dreadful, sorry.

And it definitely sounds awful with your surname.

Babytalkx · 28/02/2024 15:59

I love Betsy! But bets is my surname and my nickname is Betsy :(

I like it.
But then I like Bridie, Bridget, Kizzy, Hester, Rosalie and Betsy (I think it's my Romany blood - although I draw the line at Esmerelda (a great aunt!))

Esmeralda is FABULOUS

TheSandgroper · 26/02/2024 11:42

You could call her Nancy Bird and expect her to do great things.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Bird_Walton

Knowing the way my kids went through school and work, all I can imagine is a lifetime of nicknames of Tweet tweet, Puddie Tat, Twitter, cheep cheep, etc

celestebellman · 25/02/2024 09:26

Birdie makes me think of a character The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell, who was disturbingly sadistic and came to a bad end. Also of beady eyes and beaks, but I'm not a particular bird fan.
I guess at a push could be a nickname for Bridgett. Also agree would work on a small delicate child but not if they turned out a bit more lumpen!

I quite like Bridie - though it does make me think of the pasty.

Babla · 25/02/2024 00:36

Birdette?! 😂

I like it, ds13 has a friend called Bridie and no one chortles about it . She's the only one I've ever known in rl though

a. You’ve not said whether she’s an Irish grandma or not
b. The op is asking about BIRDIE
c autocorrect doesn’t even recognise that as a name

What are you talking about?
a, No my 13 year olds friend is not a grandma
b, I was replying to a post about the name Bridie
C , autocorrect doesn't even recognise what as a name? And what does autocorrect have to do with anything?

I'm chortling at the people suggesting Bridie.

It's such a granny name in Ireland, and not in a good way.

Everyone in Ireland aged 40 and over has an aunt Bridie. My mother had two.

Traumatic memories of extremely gothic 80s children's TV. The fate of Birdie (far right) was not pleasant (understatement).
