What do you think about the name Aubrey for a girl?

Aubrey is a man’s name. Specifically, a red-faced, claret slurping old man who wears pink trousers with a navy blazer & his old school tie, down which he has spilled his soup. He idolises Margaret Thatcher, supports UKIP and thinks fox hunting should be legalised again.

Lol you realize lots of girls names were once boys names? Would you say the same about Lesley, Kelly, Ashley, Beverley, Stacey, Whitney….the list goes on. I think you’re the one that sounds ignorant!

Don't they sound dated now.

Maireas · 16/02/2024 19:34

As pp have said, it is a boy's name. I think people get muddled with Audrey.
Call her Audrey, it's a nice name.

I think it's absolutely dreadful. Such an ugly sound.

The only one I know has the surname Brown. The double 'br' sound just makes it even worse.

PickledScrump · 16/02/2024 19:12

I really like it, only know of one and she’s a little girl about 5-6 now. Much prefer it for a girl than a boy. I don’t think it would commonly be mistaken for Audrey, on the odd occasion it might, it’s easy to correct

I can live with your judgement! And continue to apply mine.

Aubrey will always be the appalling and daft character in Life is Sweet for me. Not the best association.

More Aubrey from "Life is Sweet".

I think it's a boy's name and only given to girls in ignorance.

It's dire. Just a very unattractive name.

ThatDreamSheep · 16/02/2024 18:39

I have an Aubrey. She's 4. Never once been asked why we have her a boys name. Only been confused for Audrey once.

Springisintheair01 · 16/02/2024 18:38

I know one Aubrey. He would be about 100 now if he was still alive (he’s probably not.) Not keen sorry.

Twwodoorsaway · 16/02/2024 18:37

I know two Aubreys, both are baby girls under two.

You’ll get lots of responses here saying ‘It’s a boys name’. But times change and actually it’s much more popular for girls now

I do quite like it, it was on my list but didnt feel right. I also know one (girl) Aubrey aged 2.

In the UK, it’s a man’s name from probably the first quarter of the twentieth century. And not a very nice sounding one.

idontlikealdi · 16/02/2024 18:19

I like it, only know it as a girls name but I only know one!

FayCarew · 16/02/2024 18:16

Awful. Why give a girl an old man's name?

LutonBeds · 16/02/2024 18:11

BrightGreenGoose · 16/02/2024 18:02

It's a boys name to me. Wasn't Boycie in Only Fools and Horses called Aubrey? That's who I think of first.

I am here….

CJ4713 · 16/02/2024 18:09

I don't like it at all. Never knew it was often a male name, but just don't like the sound of it. I read it as Audrey, and then my brain thinks 'hmm, no, not right.'

ChanelNo19EDT · 16/02/2024 18:06

Terrible for a boy but kind of ok for a girl. I guess cos it rhymes with Audrey. I knew one Aubrey who was male. It has gone to the other side.

SuperGinger · 16/02/2024 18:05

Just makes me think of Aubrey Beardsley. Too many connotations of fat eunuchs for me

Alloveragain3 · 16/02/2024 18:03

Mumsnet tends to see it as a boys name but it's unisex to me.

I think it's due it's day soon and is already being used in America quite a bit.
