What is an "nn" and a "CR2"?

Sid . . . is a bit retro working class (yes, I know I'm being horrid, but I just think of old school cheeky Cockney chappies. Sid James from the Carry On films, for example).
But perhaps only curmudgeonly grannies will be thinking in these terms!
I do love Idris. Unshortened. Come on, be brave, you can manage two whole syllables in the original Welsh!

I’ve taught a lot of female Sids. I think these days it’s a very chic name for cool little girls. They always have sass!

OP, I completely understand thinking of a nickname! We didn’t and gave our daughter an unshortenable name! We now call her the stupidest things (something like Anne - Annabelly, Anni Wanni, Ann Van). None of which are catching on! And all of which she will hate before she starts school.

Idris is cute. I did not know it was Welsh at all, all the Idrises I have known have been Muslim.

Aha! As a girl's name, Sidney (or sometimes Sydney) has always been popular (altho' not necessarily shortened) among middle and upper class whites in the States. A belated pond hop, it seems!

I don't think there's any connection between the Welsh Idris and the Muslim Idris/Idriss.

Idriss is the same prophet as the one called Enoch.

I don't think Idris is cute, but Sid is.

Idris was terribly old-fashioned but became fashionable after Idris Elba became famous.

Idris is a lovely name. I wouldn’t shorten it.

Sid is a girls name around here.

Id. Lovely name

I like Sid too.
