What could be a nn for Idris ?

We are now leaning towards Idris for DC2 if it's a boy, but need ideas for nn .Any thoughts ? Thanks !

Idris was terribly old-fashioned but became fashionable after Idris Elba became famous.

Idris is cute. I did not know it was Welsh at all, all the Idrises I have known have been Muslim.
I don't think there's any connection between the Welsh Idris and the Muslim Idris/Idriss.

Idriss is the same prophet as the one called Enoch.

Aha! As a girl's name, Sidney (or sometimes Sydney) has always been popular (altho' not necessarily shortened) among middle and upper class whites in the States. A belated pond hop, it seems!

OP, I completely understand thinking of a nickname! We didn’t and gave our daughter an unshortenable name! We now call her the stupidest things (something like Anne - Annabelly, Anni Wanni, Ann Van). None of which are catching on! And all of which she will hate before she starts school.

Idris is cute. I did not know it was Welsh at all, all the Idrises I have known have been Muslim.

Thanks for your thoughts all . DH and I have reflected on the name and realised we ( sadly ) don't like it enough to use it in its full form all of the time . I think we've been after one syllable names all along and only just realised . Shame actually as I was quite excited to be using a Welsh name ( we're Welsh ) . It looks like DH will win the day with his no. 1 choice of Sid , which is growing on me . I might see if Idris can be a middle name and honour it somehow !

I know lots of Idris's and they are all known as Idris - it's not a name that lends itself to shortening ime.

Bit confused. Iddy isn't any shorter than Idris - they're both two syllables.

If it's Idris as a Welsh name, it comes from the elements 'udd' meaning 'lord' and 'rhys' meaning 'ardent, impulsive' (in the martial sense). So I would second Rhys / Rees as a shortened form. If you want a nickname of the short form, the traditional Welsh one is 'Rhysyn'.

If it's Idris as an Arabic name, I've no idea about shortened versions / nicknames.

Could be Red for all you know, if you like the name go for it. Nicknames evolve through the years, if you want him to be called something different from his name then change the name.
