Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

So workhouses then?

No! Communal living facility! Entirely voluntary. Or pay your own way. It could save millions.

Dollysfriend · 22/10/2026 21:01

I had a bow on my disability car in July. Whoopie do.

I walk with a cane, can no longer use my dominant hand and live in pain, particularly at night.
It costs me £320 a month that goes back into the mobility CHARITY @DawnRaiderNight

Mobility is funded by the four big banks. Nobody gets a top of the range car and if you're tall you are b*ggered as there is little choice.

I have no experience of social housing but as I am now disabled I might have to excess it. Having worked for 40+ years I've already paid full national insurance contributions. I also paid for many people through my 45% tax!

So for the purpose of Bingo
I used to be fat
I'm married to a second generation immigrant
My DD is SEN (no benefits and also a trainee medic)
I claim PIP

I think I'm missing one?
So shoot me and you'll save my £750 a month.

Three able bodied children all go to mainstream schools, ADHD

If your friend’s daughter is 27, her DC must be younger than 16, therefore if the friend’s daughter is receiving disability benefits for her DC it is DLA rather than PIP. For motability, they would need high rate mobility DLA. The ways of being eligible for this are:
-be unable to walk
-be virtually unable to walk (VUW)
-have no legs or feet
-under the severe mental impairment (SMI) criteria.
-have a severe visual impairment
-be blind and dead and need assistance from another person to walk outdoors
-the exertion required to walk would be a danger to their life or lead to a serious deterioration in health.

Most don’t apply to ADHD. The SMI criteria applies to a very small number of DC with ADHD who have other difficulties with their ADHD. The vast majority of DC with ADHD do not meet the SMI criteria for this.

Motability vehicles aren’t free. You exchange your mobility component for it. Many also have an advanced payment. DS1’s current vehicle had an upfront 5 figure sum. The vehicles aren’t sold to the person, they don’t own them.

What makes you think that those with PIP dont pay tax?? Unbelievable.

Did I mention Pip. Someone who doesn’t work or has never worked has never paid tax in their lives because they have never received money from any other source other than the government. You can’t pay tax on money you didn’t earn by providing either a service or a product.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/10/2026 21:02

There's some right nutters on this thread.

bryceQ · 22/10/2026 21:02

For the SMI criteria you need a diagnosis of Learning Disability. Even a child who elopes all the time will usually just get low rate mobility.

plasticplate · 22/10/2026 21:04

OP I think you need to read about how the motability system works. Eg it isn't cumulative. You don't build up points towards it by having multiple disabled children. Personally I think you are talking horseshit.

My dad has a motability car after being left paralysed after a stroke. He wasn’t given it. It comes out of his benefits allowance. He also had to pay up front for it. He then had to pay another £6k to have it adapted and have a hoist fitted in the back to be able to winch his wheelchair in and out. You clearly have no idea how motability works. Nobody is given anything for free

Ugh I’m annoyed I’ve even given your goady rage baiting any time

No, you don’t. There are ways of being eligible for it without an LD diagnosis.

But the vast, vast majority won’t be eligible.

XenoBitch · 22/10/2026 20:47

So what should happen to her?

Communal living and support to get into work. Childcare so she can work provided by other women in the same situation. And a bus pass.

As a taxpayer, I fund the NHS and civil service, does this mean I get to tell people who work in the public sector they can’t buy a new car or have a new-build car because I fund their lifestyle?

I know many an NHS employee who had disgruntled patients tell them that "they pay their wages".

I have a motability car, I had to find £1000s for a down payment for it, it also costs me £70 a week to lease it. when it broke down, i didn’t have a car for 7 weeks because motability clients are last on the list for dealerships. motability covered a rental car that i can’t use, because if my disability, so i had to pay extra to be able to have a rental i can use, All the while still paying £70 a week for the motability car. i’m also limited in how many miles i can drive in it before i start paying a mileage subsidy. At the moment it’s 20k a miles a year, but from next year it reduces to 10k miles. i do more than 10k for my job, so I will have to pay for those miles.
abd the car is not mine. it has to be returned to motability so they can sell it as a used car and make more money off me.
Im not sure where people get the idea that motability is a ‘free new car’ because that absolutely is not the case.

For SMI

To qualify under the SMI route, the claimant must already be entitled to the High Rate Care Component of DLA and meet all of the core criteria: 1, 2, 3]

  1. Arrested or Incomplete Development of the Brain: A formal diagnosis or clinical evidence of a condition causing a lack of brain development (such as autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, or global developmental delay). 1, 2, 3]
  2. Severe Impairment of Intelligence: Evidence of significantly reduced cognitive function, low developmental levels, or a lack of danger awareness. 1, 2]
  3. Severe Impairment of Social Functioning: Evidence of severe difficulty communicating, interacting with peers, or following instructions. 1, 2]
  4. Severe Behavioural Problems: Extreme, disruptive, or dangerous behaviors that are unpredictable and occur regularly. 1, 2, 3]
  5. Regular Physical Restraint or Intervention: The documented need for physical intervention, hand-holding, reins, or being strapped into a pushchair/buggy to prevent harm to themselves or others. 1, 2, 3]
  6. Continual Supervision: The requirement to be watched over constantly whenever awake due to lack of safety/danger awareness. 1, 2]

If you don’t have a job you don’t pay tax. Paying some tax back to the government out of the money they GIVE you in the first place isn’t ’paying tax’ 😂

in which case there are very few people who pay tax at all. If you are balancing contributions through tax against state provision few people are net contributors. I assume from the thread you are aware PIP and DLA are not means tested.

So both the disabled worker and non disabled worker are very likely to get out more than they put in to the state. As are any people that don’t work with or without a disability.

I may get get some state pension and possibly national insurance contribution based benefits in the future. Possibly disability benefits but luckily I’m OK looking after myself now. However there is no way in the world I will ever be able to contribute the money spent on me by the tax payer through the NHS.

That doesn’t mean there has to be an LD diagnosis, though.

XenoBitch · 22/10/2026 21:12

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 20:55

Workhouses ? No some kind of communal living facility where the women raised the children together. They would support each other and could help each other out. It would be heated so they didn’t have to worry about heating bills. They would have their own separate living and cooking etc facilities but would have a central nursery so that they could take turns to work. They would get qualifications to enable them to become more self sufficient and then they can do what they want. It wouldn’t be compulsory. No one would make them go there. They just wouldn’t get a new car, large benefit payments or a brand new house for free for as long as they want it. I think it’s genius.

So an HMO with work details attached then.

Why women? What about dads with SEN kids? Some are single too.

As usual, women are expected to provide free care. Not their kids, but other peoples.

plasticplate · 22/10/2026 21:13

You can tell some posters are getting their thrills on this one.

bryceQ · 22/10/2026 21:14

Fair enough. But my experience with my son was we only got high rate mobility when we got the LD diagnosis. Despite there being evidence of restraint, attending specialist school, non verbal, no ability to follow instructions. I know nothing about PIP but DLA high rate for both components was unbelievably hard

Bridgertonisbest · 22/10/2026 21:15

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 20:32

3 children and all diagnosed with adhd and she’s never ever had a job? Chances are she’s playing the system.
Hopefully she’s on long term contraception. No point in her having any more children if she can’t raise the three she already has. We don’t need more burdens on the state either.

Those who don’t believe parents lie all the time to get a diagnosis for their child have never worked in education. I have to return a phone call to the local occupational health team tomorrow to inform them how pupil ‘A’ has adapted to his ‘new mobility aid’. Said pupil has never used a mobility aid and is partaking in the DOE. You couldn’t make it up.

ADHD is highly heritable, maybe she also has ADHD and has never been able to work.

You're a teacher, not an ADHD expert, stay in your lane.

PIP is completely different and the criteria for enhanced mobility are not the same as for DLA. SMI isn’t a term associated with PIP.

A not insignificant number who receive HRM DLA under the SMI criteria have to appeal for it.

Just because you were refused until DS had an LD diagnosis doesn’t mean one is needed in every case. There are other ways of satisfying the criteria.
