AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

Give is surely the wrong word. The single parent family with disabilities will have been assessed as requiring a certain size of house. The benefits system will have totted up the entitlement to cash. Some of that entitlement the family have chosen to spend on leasing the motability vehicle. Neither the house or the vehicle belong to them.

emuloc · 22/10/2026 19:47

🥱 What was the 'big reveal' that she got at the garage, when collecting the car? Asking for a friend, who is bored, on her shift at Wendy's.

SchoolSwimming · 22/10/2026 19:47

So a family with high needs are able to live comfortably and get around to I assume multiple medical appointments with ease? How is that a bad thing?
This will be consistency , stability and needs met for them. Long term outcomes improved.

Would you rather they were inadequately housed, dragged round on buses to appointments and if they can’t afford it they miss appointments/school? How will that help the country long term ?

20+ years ago I worked in social housing. You might be surprised to know that quite a lot of tenants never paid any rent, it was all covered by housing benefit.

Those days are long gone.

Misc123 · 22/10/2026 19:48

they are not given cars they are leased and paid for out of pip etc if want certain types of car someone can make up difference themselves. Reason why new cars is that they often have to be adapted to the disability. To qualify for scheme you have to be in receipt of following

To join the scheme, you must receive one of the following qualifying benefits with at least 12 months remaining on your award:

  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement

She struck gold with the 4 bedroomed house though! Who gave her that?

Branleuse · 22/10/2026 19:49

Those disabled people. They're to blame!

PinkyFlamingo · 22/10/2026 19:49

Anyone that is jealous of a person having a mobility car is a complete and utter cunt

Given a house?

Wow, thats amazing.

Just one house?! I’ve been given three, and four cars (one is a Ferrari in case I have to be somewhere super quick).

blackbunny · 22/10/2026 19:50

The car. it’s leased to her- she’d have to pay a lump sum at the end of the lease to make it her property .Otherwise it has to be returned. It will never be hers to sell or give away.Alternatively she exchanges it for another car. She pays to lease it by handing over the mobility component of the PIP.

The house. I’m assuming a fairy godmother didn’t grant her the house, so it’s a local authority property. Again it doesn’t belong to her. She must have met certain criteria to be allocated it, and I’d think most of that is to do with her children and their needs.
Before you race to judge her, find out the truth behind all this.

Seymour5 · 22/10/2026 19:51

moonraker0 · 22/10/2026 19:46

If people are choosing the car then they are not getting the money as well. The payment comes out of the award and you have to be receiving the higher rate to receive it, anyone who’s applied will tell you that’s not as easy as most people think but everyone knows ‘someone’ who’s ‘getting everything for free’, in this case a four bedroom house as well apparently 😏

One Of my neighbours has a Motability car. He has a degenerative condition, is in a wheelchair, and is unable to drive, his wife has to drive him. He works, his wife works. I think they are exactly the kind of clients Motability was set up for.

So again, rented to the tenant, not given to the tenant.

gamerchick · 22/10/2026 19:52

Of all the things that didnt happen, that didn't happen the most OP. You over egged 🙄

I bet they are all made up and this woman tells everyone she meets all about how she is defrauding the system.

You must know this woman. Tell us how you know her.

EarlofShrewsbury · 22/10/2026 19:53

Ooh, a single mother with disabled children getting help.

Makes a nice change from the immigrants are getting everything before our own brigade

Yes it's truly amazing that people smart enough to manipulate complicated forms and deceive medical professionals are seemingly unable to stop themselves telling all their neighbours about their illegal actions.

GintyMcGinty · 22/10/2026 19:53

as if.

Oh look, it's today’s goady as fuck benefit bashing thread. Right on cue.

It's almost daily, mumsnet should really stamp down on the benefit bashing, the hate directed at SEN kids and disabled people. Along with the last bastion of acceptable hate....fat. come on MN.....tell us why you moderate race and religion but let these threads stand?

I completely agree. I swear some people won’t be happy until disabled people are housebound though.

Blogswife · 22/10/2026 19:55

. It’s not a great look being jealous of disabled people . Perhaps look at it another way and be grateful that you and your “hardworking “ children don’t qualify . My very hardworking daughter qualifies for a mobility vehicle because my DGD is severely disabled . We all wish she didn’t need one.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/10/2026 19:55

Did she get a goat too?

flowerkiller · 22/10/2026 19:56

And details very specifically how she spends her free cash on getting her nails done and going to maccies daily.

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 22/10/2026 19:56

What absolute bollocks. Nobody is given a car or a house as part of disability benefits. Do you really believe that shit @DawnRaiderNight?

Motability cars are provided INSTEAD OF CASH PIP OR DLA BENEFITS.

Social housing is provided according to needs and is RENTED. She hasn’t been given a house!
