AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

It's got to the point now where it isn't what you earn that counts, it's what you don't have to pay for that matters and improves circumstances financially.

ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats · 22/10/2026 19:39

Your friends daughter has been GIVEN a 4 bedroom detached house? Who gave it to her? A sugar daddy?

MyArtfulGreySloth · 22/10/2026 19:39

Hope you’re ready for a pile on OP. You’re not wrong though.

Coffeekat · 22/10/2026 19:39

I really hope that posters aren’t daft enough to respond to this.

NoMusicPlease · 22/10/2026 19:40

Yabu.

If you think it's that easy, apply for one and see how far you get. They're vital to allow people with disabilities freedom of movement, which often includes going to work.

Punching down isn't a good look.

PropertyD · 22/10/2026 19:40

There will be a pile on shortly saying they all deserve them and how dare you.

KermitsABadInfluence · 22/10/2026 19:40

Wow, thats amazing.

Sure she has. I shall get my disability bingo card out. I will be back in two ticks.

Puffergalatics · 22/10/2026 19:41

What are the ‘various diagnosis’?

Simonjt · 22/10/2026 19:41

How odd she’s been given a house, which local authority is giving people houses, rather than renting out their properties?

rockstarshoes · 22/10/2026 19:42

Yawn!

KaySam · 22/10/2026 19:42

So one in every 5 cars is a motobility one which means the majority of new cars aren’t.

who has given her a house ?

she has got the car and probably the house due to her children having several disabilities, they’re not given out for the fun of it,

nice for the rage bait post it’s been a few days since the last one,

What are the ‘various diagnosis’?

I bet they are all made up and this woman tells everyone she meets all about how she is defrauding the system.

4/10 for trying OP, you would have got more points if you had mentioned her and her children all get a free car for their ADHD.

JWhipple · 22/10/2026 19:45

You're not wrong! I told my GP I was a bit sad and sometimes I was so sad I could barely bring myself to line up my tins of beans with the labels all facing the same way.
Before I could even say anything about woke, the GP had tapped the side of their nose, winked at me and opened a secret door.

I was then on an exciting gameshow and within five minutes was driving away in my brand-new rangerover with a blue badge, on my way to my newly acquired seven bedded mansion with a separate stable block.

It really was that easy.

Also given the state of America these days, they really shouldn't be throwing stones...

Housing Association? Local Authority?

Oh yes. Because people with neuro diverse needs and/or mental health issues are all given everything on a plate and routinely leap up housing lists.

TheFishFish · 22/10/2026 19:46

Oh look, it's today’s goady as fuck benefit bashing thread. Right on cue.

moonraker0 · 22/10/2026 19:46

If people are choosing the car then they are not getting the money as well. The payment comes out of the award and you have to be receiving the higher rate to receive it, anyone who’s applied will tell you that’s not as easy as most people think but everyone knows ‘someone’ who’s ‘getting everything for free’, in this case a four bedroom house as well apparently 😏

20+ years ago I worked in social housing. You might be surprised to know that quite a lot of tenants never paid any rent, it was all covered by housing benefit.
