To think the French students are out of control?

Demonstrating against large class sizes is one thing.

Smashing up shop windows and looting goods is another.

Idiots. They are 14/15 and when they are arrested the French authorities will come down on them and their criminal records will stay with them forever. Where are the parents in all of this?

Woukd this happen in the UK?

I still can't get that image of the fireman completely ablaze as a bunch of gormless goons look on in utter rapture out of my head.

Real Lord of the Flies moment that's for sure.

OonaStubbs · Today 19:50

Are they going to bring in the army?

BluebadgeCF · Today 19:51

YABVU to think it’s French students looting and not other groups taking advantage of the situation

It’s not still going on is it?

Nah, Macron is talking some sense into them now.

They will be like little agneaux from now on.

Explain the logic to me. They are complaining that there aren’t enough resources so they burn everything to the ground which requires capital to replace it which means even less resources for them.

The majority of protesters are not violent. The majority of those who are violent are either in vocational training or not students at all- just thugs that want to get some outlet for their violence.

I have noticed an increase in churches mysteriously burning down and grave yards being destroyed.
It is going to spread. Europe is a tinderbox. Government officials have ignored mass immigration and stretched services.

Yep, no mosquees set on fire..

Can we please be very clear. The students demonstrating have nothing to do with the violences. Their grievances are legitimate. The opportunists that use violence to steal and break are not. The violence used by the police on some unauthorised yet peaceful marches is also not.

lets NOT confuse the movement with opportunists.

I think individuals should take ownership for their actions - if they use violence to achieve their aims, then the state should be allowed to respond in kind in order to protect life and property - as in the case of France, now.

The initial use of violence except for self-defence is otherwise never acceptable.

It’s therefore incumbent on all of us to call out the behaviour of the thuggish element in France.

Fair enough. But, more often than not, people have had to protest violently for rights. Workers rights, democratic rights, female rights, independence rights and so on. They are rarely "given" through noblesse oblige.

Mass migration has made France an amazing country and one that people the world over love to visit. I genuinely don't see what you are seeing with these protests, if anything they are a model example of multiculturalism because I see people of all ethnicities coming together to fight for their right to a decent education.

A lot of the destruction can be attributed to the far right who seem to be capitalising on genuine resentment in order to make the left look bad. That's what I'm hearing from people I know who are French.

Yep. These poor kids just need some ping-pong tables and after school clubs and they'd stop rioting.

Lemonfrost · Today 20:10

I don’t know if people are arsonists and looters because of some noble cause. What principle is behind someone going on the rob for Jordans, jewellery etc.?

I think you misunderstood my comment and the post I responded to.

I'd guess that the student protests have been infiltrated by other forces intent on creating mayhem. This will either fizzle out or there will be baton charges, tear gas and water cannon, if that hasn't happened already.

If anyone is killed and I hope not, well you can guess what will happen then.

I strongly agree with you.
Creating sponsored mayhem and civil disobedience to the point where citizens feel the state and the Law are not protecting them any more, so that a ‘strongman’ leader appears far more acceptable in such a crisis.
That leads to armed police and to private militias, and they will enforce emergency powers curtailing civil liberties, and a creeping undermining of any of the state’s more liberal social policies, aiming to turn back the clock (to about 1962) to refashion a society which willingly accepts heavy authoritarian control.

The principal policies targeted will (bafflingly, given the sights witnessed in various mob hotspots of late) be those enshrining the rights of women over their own bodies, along with the typical equality legislation the West has adopted in the past fifty years.
They want women back in the home, in the kitchen, as they have concluded that all society’s ills are based on too much freedom for women. Seriously.

They want back the territory and power women fought for and won since the early ‘70s, and they have an extraordinary list of friendly groups attached to them who in other circs would avoid each other like the Plague. (eg American Fundamentalist Catholics linking arms with the scabbier ends of Tommy Robinson’s lot)

These are not student protests. These are riots that emanated from specific demographics and enclaves around France.

PumpkinSeasonIsHere · Today 20:25

Tear gas and water cannons were definitely used yesterday (Saturday), they were both discussed on the news.

Theresa May as an idiot getting rid of Boris' cannons. We could do with an jnjection of common sense back in the UK as well.

Who will be first to the guillotine?
Will it be similar to the Chinese Cultural revolution with destruction of the Four Olds?

Seriously? Careful what you wish for. Presumably you don’t run a business or own any property so you aren’t concerned about those that do? Lovely 🙄

Who else wants women back in the home? Let’s think? We seem to be fighting on all fronts now. Incels, extreme right wing, Islamic extremists…. poor women.
