To think the French students are out of control?

Demonstrating against large class sizes is one thing.

Smashing up shop windows and looting goods is another.

Idiots. They are 14/15 and when they are arrested the French authorities will come down on them and their criminal records will stay with them forever. Where are the parents in all of this?

Woukd this happen in the UK?

Looting shops is ‘funny’ is it?
All a jolly wheeze while it happens to others, not so fucking amusing if you’re a shop worker / owner being attacked or an 80 year old couple caught up in it and robbed by feral scum.
How would you like to be caught up in it, maybe having a chimney pot thrown off a roof land on your head? Hilarious right?
The only funny thing I saw was two thugs getting flattened by a falling plate glass window they were trying to smash.

I haven’t seen that but did see a poor distraught woman saying stop this is not the cause. They went in anyway.

The responsibility lies with those people smashing things up.

I only hope the powers that be are geared up for any copycat rioting here - I’m sure various factions are drooling at the thought of destroying a few lovely London landmarks, and egging on lowlifes to loot to their hearts’ content.

I was in a French town a few weeks ago and the church had been damaged by arsonists. The locals said everyone knew who had done it but the authorities have the “electrical fault” excuse at the ready.

They weren’t getting professional jobs (or jobs at all) before this anyway - that’s a big part of the problem.

If it is frightening maybe it is time that western governments (and the older generations that elect them) thought a bit more about inter-generational fairness.

And the deep racial inequalities in France

Oddly, I think that you would only see people on the streets in the UK, if you cut welfare, materially.

So, that’s not going to happen, is it…

You know it’s happened relatively recently though, right? When was it, 2010?

I have noticed an increase in churches mysteriously burning down and grave yards being destroyed.
It is going to spread. Europe is a tinderbox. Government officials have ignored mass immigration and stretched services.

I am an art and history lover and all that, but what’s striking to me is when the same people stay silent when people burn houses and hotels in working class areas inhabited by POC.

It has happened a few times in England. Never about welfare cuts.
That is just punching down to say those in welfare are violent, when time after time left wing educated individuals are showing violent behaviour.

PenelopeShadow · Today 13:12

OP.

You ask if the riots are out of control.

I think they are absolutely controlled by those who wish France-and indeed the West-harm.

Hello again, @DebbieSavage ! Still doing an impersonation of Henry Root!

OonaStubbs · Today 13:18

It's a shame as the original protests were by nice lefty students and were peaceful and pleasant but then the nasty right wing yobs got involved and things got violent, as they always do.

I didn’t say people on welfare were violent (wtf!!). For all you know I’m on welfare myself, anyway.

A few people in this thread have suggested that Brits would never riot, which is clearly nonsense.

I also have no idea why you would say it was “educated individuals” either. (BTW it’s possible to be both educated and in receipt of state benefits).

Superb bit of gormless left-wingery. I particularly like the idea of every school and university being burnt down with the aim of giving the students “the future they deserve”. Top logic.

I do love a good post where you just can't tell whether someone is being sarcastic or not. Bravo.

Debbie is doing satire. Granted it’s hard to tell as her posts don’t look out of place.

Nicked Nikes and flat screens.

Yep, they really stuck it to the man…..

People are losing sight of the fact that neither side are "winning" in this, just Russia laughing it's head off...

If these "peaceful protests" paralyse Europe just as freezing temperatures push Ukraine into a full blown humanitarian crisis (Kyiv, a three million city, has already endured two weeks of intermittent power and water), I bet on Russia making a move on the Baltics. Add a republican midterm defeat and the window before the new congress takes office in January, and Moscow could hardly ask for a better moment to test NATO.

They are already ‘testing’ NATO.

To invade and hold one of the baltics is completely different, and infeasible.

Quine0nline · Today 14:13

I saw one tricolour but far more Palestinian flags and either soviet or french communist flags. The looters were according to the TV reports of the culture as those here. No doubt a good number of culturally french protesting about the economics too.

Extremely feasible if NATO proves unwilling to interfere.

I disagree.

The collective Baltic states have a very well trained and resourced military. Even if Washington demurred, Poland et al would consider themselves next and would not stand by.
