To think people shouldn't park on yellow lines or park dangerously near schools?

It happens constantly; both at my little one's primary, and also at my older child's secondary?
Junctions are also parked on, and driveways blocked.
Sadly a lady was knocked over at a crossing near the primary school a few weeks' ago. Of course we don't know the ins and outs, but selfish parking does absolutely reduce visibility.

We have parking wardens at our school every single drop off and pick up windows for 15 mins. They ticket you within 30 seconds. It’s such low hanging fruit!! My husband got one, stupid man. Didn’t do it again.

ive seen 3 other cars with tickets. Usually dads. Usually once once before they realise it’s serious. It’s a great deterrent for stupid parking

DoubleBusy2026 · 16/10/2026 20:25

I’ve just now been told off for ‘idling’ (in my EV!) in the school car park whilst picking DD up from her school disco. Parked perfectly legally, in a space, but apparently I’m “idling” 🤯 Complete with faked coughing 😆😆😆

putitonthewrongway · 16/10/2026 20:28

It’s always the same faces, at least you know who the CFs are and they are best avoided! One of the mums that does it near my daughter’s school also parks in the mother and baby parking when she doesn’t have her kids with her so these people feel entitled in all areas of their life I’m guessing.

fridaynightzzz · 16/10/2026 20:31

They double park outside DDs secondary school (it’s okay because they put hazard lights on) even though there’s a sports centre next door with a massive car park you can use.
One day there was parents double parked on both sides blocking the extremely busy road entirely. It was quarter to three as well. They wouldn’t move until they were made to. It was chaos.

RaggedRocks · 16/10/2026 21:09

Yesterday, a car parked on the pavement, up against an electrical box, so impossible to pass without walking in the road. Called the driver a Muppet, don't think I was being unreasonable.

MrsKeats · 16/10/2026 21:11

I live opposite a primary school. Parents block my car in every day by parking across my drive.
Parents regularly park dangerously on the zigzag lines as well.
The sense of entitlement is astonishing.

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 21:35

@FrippEnos No - I mean people. They're not all parents/carers/grandparents.

@seahorsessky Schools will of course make provisions for blue badge holders. I know that at the schools my children attend, they are offered permits which enable them to park in the school car park in the allocated disabled bays. And, as someone has already said, blue badge holders are permitted to park on double yellows under certain rules and restrictions (providing their badge is displayed I believe)?

I do agree but I also think councils should consider parking when they build schools not because parents deserve somewhere to park but purely because of the chaos it causes and danger to children. Or staggered start/ finish times although I appreciate there would still be people with multiple children.

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 21:46

@ithinkthereforeyouarewrong
How would staggered pick-up times work for working parents, as just one example? For teachers and for safeguarding?
It isn't the volume of parents parking that is usually the issue - it's the selfish way that some of them are parking that is the problem.
In addition, both of my children attend schools that are many, many years old - over 100 years old in fact - so it's not as simple as just building new schools and factoring in parking.

Dameputtingonabraveface · 16/10/2026 21:54

Well of course it is not okay. At best it is entitled, at worst it is dangerous. There are 2 primary schools and a secondary at the top and bottom of my road. I live in a city but border farmland and a road 2 schools are on is single track. School pick up times are worse than the rush hour on the m621. Getting my car out to get to work in the morning, if I time it wrongly, takes longer than the drive to my office! I get (irrationally)? pissed off about the high school traffic. Most children who attend are local and there are bus stops for those who do not want to walk up the massive hill. I understand that there will be some children who for various reasons are not able to get themselves there independently, but otherwise it appears secondary age children are not expected to get themselves to and from school.

Why not treat acting like a twat outside a school in a vehicle as

  1. A serious offence with heavy fines and driving bans and
  2. as a child protection issue ie you get banned from the area round the school, Social Services involvement - as you are a twat and incapable of insight into your behaviour
Buzzlightyeartowel · Today 03:52

I completely agree. I live a 10 minute walk from my kids school. We walk everyday regardless of the weather. The amount of parents that arrive 40/50 minutes early to get a space is ridiculous.

There’s one woman who parks blocking the entrance to the car park every day, on the yellow zigzags, so she doesn’t have to get her baby out of the car (I also have a baby, I know it can be awkward but we just do it don’t we?) At least the ones of us that have a little common sense do!
The school have sent emails, letters, the head teacher stands outside, a traffic warden comes round every so often, yet nothing changes.

It’s a village school so the majority live within walking distance. I appreciate some people drive as it’s on their way to/from work. But you can still park appropriately.

shejokes11 · Today 04:38

Sorry I have no choice as they eat up all the parking spaces including curbs and corners. Also the school entrance road is a permit required road and I don’t have the permits as I live in another area but I can apply it’s just long. Finally I have a disabled badge that literally allows it - I just don’t block crossings and ensure it’s a good space away from end of pavements :&

Having a blue badge is an acceptable reason, as discussed in this post. The rest of your reasons are not.

HelmholtzWatson · Today 07:20

Yep - lazy, entitled so and so's raising more lazy, entitled so and so's.

The huge dollop of irony is that everyone driving to school "as it's safer" increases the likelihood of accidents. Tragedy of the commons.

Blueysmum2026 · Today 07:36

This is part of the benefit of using breakfast and after school club. I can’t stand the school drop off - it is just so stressful, I am ashamed to say but it does make me irrational as I am just desperate and rushed to get them and go! . 7.30am and 6pm pickup the drop off is so much easier.

as previously pointed out, most people only have a 20 minute walk max but it’s really hard to do that when under time pressure with work or when it’s raining.

my friend said at her little one’s primary they have a drop off point where the kids jump out and are escorted to their classroom by parent volunteers. Maybe more schools should adopt this.

Bearbookagainandagain · 16/10/2026 13:37

I'm amazed so many parents need to park near the school at all. Particularly primary when everyone (here at least) lives within 10-20 min walk of the school (20 min max, we are at the threshold, most families live much closer than this).

It's an all other level of laziness.

This isn't true, especially for village schools. The school my DD goes to serves about 3 local villages, 2 of which don't have schools. It's a 10 minute drive for us. Also parents often have to go straight to work from the school run.

Apacketofbiscuitsaday · Today 08:59

Of course they shouldn't but so many people are entitled or just don't give a shit unfortunately.

Sandsnake · Today 09:09

The only time of been called a Karen was when I challenged someone parking on double yellows really unsafely by school. I laughed at him and took it as a badge of honour. The double yellows have now been coned off at our school and that has been entirely successful, despite years of emails / letters / traffic wardens failing.

Blue Badges feel tricky to be honest. On one hand I totally get that disabled parents may need to park near the school. But on the other hand it still makes it unsafe, especially if lots of people are doing it at the same time. Not sure I’d feel any better if my kid was hit by a car because the people parked in a way that reduces visibility were disabled. I think schools should work with parents who require disabled parking to find alternative solutions.

Sadcafe · Today 09:17

Can’t believe how anyone would think it’s not unreasonable to park like this, double yellow lines mean no parking, the parking restrictions outside schools are there to ensure the safety of the children, but sadly this is an all too common event and occurs outside almost every school I know , some are much worse than others. I’m happy to admit photographing such behaviour outside our grandkids school( did take the picture in such a way the vehicles were obviously visible but not number plates) and ask the council if they could send their enforcement officers out. They have been several times and it’s effective, without anyone actually being fined, but as soon as they go its back to normal

sausageth · Today 09:25

There's absolutely nothing you can do about it. I've tried. I reported a woman to the council for parking on single yellow lines right as you turn in to the school road and you couldn't see past her massive car. Had a few close shaves people coming the other way but can't see them. Then the traffic backs out onto the main road waiting behind her car. They couldn't care less, told me to report it to the school. The school did nothing.

Then again, a local resident yelled at me for parking right up at the quiet end because it was just too chaotic and couldn't move for cars. I was tempted to direct him to the other end where the real problems are.
Can't bloody win.

BirdLandedonmyHead · Today 09:40

A few weeks ago, when the parking bay was full, an idiot left their car so the back end blocked the carriageway. The school is on a main road. The traffic was stationary for nearly 10minutes.

But remember... they are only gone for a couple of minutes as thats all it takes to walk three minutes to the classroom door, talk to the teacher, make plans for the weekend and stroll back to the car. Then get the chikdten into the car.

FunPartyIdeas · Today 10:04

@sausageth I agree that there are a number of parents who have to go straight from work after dropping off (myself included). But that of course doesn't mean they can't park somewhere a little further away to make things safer.
