To think people shouldn't park on yellow lines or park dangerously near schools?

It happens constantly; both at my little one's primary, and also at my older child's secondary?
Junctions are also parked on, and driveways blocked.
Sadly a lady was knocked over at a crossing near the primary school a few weeks' ago. Of course we don't know the ins and outs, but selfish parking does absolutely reduce visibility.

Completely agree. Common sense goes completely out the window during the school run - not to mention the vast increase in self entitlement and desire to break the law and ignore the Highway Code. Utter muppets.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 16/10/2026 13:16

For some reason normakly sane and sensible people lose their minds near schools. Which logically, you would think they would act more cautiously than normal due to the sheer number of vulnerable pedestrians.

MorrisseysMisery · 16/10/2026 13:23

Sheer laziness and lack of respect for authority. Me me me.
This happens every day God sends at DD (primary) school.
Same parents every day.
They trot over to the school gates and breeze past the Headteacher, HT has repeatedly had words about the zig zag parking, she's contacted LA, Police, sent out texts and emails and nothing changes.

There is definitely a very rebellious, hard core group of folks around here who just pathologically defy any rule, suggestion, or law.

Eldest DC and I saw a child launched 2 metre in the air after being hit by a speeding driver.
It was hideous, sobering and the child's poor mother was beside herself.
I will never forget it.

GreenWheat · 16/10/2026 13:26

I agree OP. It astounds me that they're usually parents at the school, but are perfectly happy to endanger their children's classmates for the sake of their own convenience.

mynameiscalypso · 16/10/2026 13:29

Hard agree. Parents go absolutely insane over parking. We had several issues last year where parents were verbally abusive towards the (very nice) local parking warden in front of all the kids at drop off. I think the head teacher had to intervene at least once. Despite it all, parents still park and drive in an extremely dangerous and illegal manner.

Cakeandslippers · 16/10/2026 13:32

I don't think there is anything that can be done. Our school send out at least one email a week about it (with pictures), the head comes out, some times they have the traffic wardens down. I live about 2-3 minutes walk from the gate and no one parks this far down even though there is plenty of room. We are all worried there will be a bad accident due to the road layout how people leave their cars, only yesterday my husband saw an extremely close call, and it's regular. And these are all parents, so I can't quite work it out. I overheard a couple of them finding the school emails about poor parking funny when they had featured in them. I just hope none of their (or other) children 'feature' in an accident as a result.

BurntBroccoli · 16/10/2026 13:32

Who are the 18% who think you are being unreasonable?!

Assume they are guilty of doing it. I live near a school and it drives me nuts the amount of entitled parents I see.

Just wondering if the headteacher thought to ask the parents directly why they are parking there before contacting the police? It seems extreme to call the police on children's parents. Have they ever thought of the knock on effect on the wellbeing of the children in her care if the police choose to act on it. The implications for the children could be severe if parents get into trouble. That should be at the forefront of any good headteachers mind instead of willy nilly contacting the police.

Icecreamandcoffee · 16/10/2026 13:33

They should yes. However, unfortunately every school has a small group of hardcore entitled arseholes who cannot possibly be expected to use their legs for more than 20 steps. Some don't even get out the car.

I also hate the parents that don't switch the engine off and leave the car idling whilst they sit waiting on the school run - best of it is in order to get their "space" they are there 40 mins before school drop off and collection.

The head has done everything they can, the police have been out. They just continue their selfish behavior.

I have actually noticed (many round us have personalised numberplates) that they are entitled arseholes wherever they are, not just the school run. I regularly see the zig zag/ drive blocking/ engine idling knob head's cars parked in disabled spaces, across dropped curbs, on double yellow lines, up on the path so no-one can walk past them. It's just who they are.

MellowSubmarine · 16/10/2026 13:34

Completely agree. There’s a school near us where two children have been hit by cars right outside the gate in the last 6 months.

Oh my goodness that’s awful.

They need to start doling out heavy fines and points and CCTV. That’s the only way things will improve.

Yet another email has been sent out by the secondary school, but it won't change anything.
I don't understand why people think they have the right to park dangerously and/or illegally?

That's what I want to know. This sounds like one of those threads where there is no argument for the unreasonable, but apparently there are 4 or 5 people who think it's fine to park dangerously.

Bearbookagainandagain · 16/10/2026 13:37

I'm amazed so many parents need to park near the school at all. Particularly primary when everyone (here at least) lives within 10-20 min walk of the school (20 min max, we are at the threshold, most families live much closer than this).

It's an all other level of laziness.

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 13:38

@Bjorkdidit They will be the selfish people putting other's lives at risk by parking wherever they like.

Actually I saw a car yesterday parked on the zig zag outside my son's school... The rest of the street was empty since it was 5pm, so a parent coming to get there kids from school club. They had about of dozens of other options, but really needed to save those 10 sec...

Yes, but they don't usually acknowledge it or admit it on here.

Quine0nline · 16/10/2026 13:44

Good. Breaking the law is a crime. You know what a double yellow line or zig zag means. You follow the law. If the local authority can persuade the local.pilce to enforce a law and fine a few drivers then all to the good.

The parents would be in a lot more trouble than a parking ticket, or points on a license, if they were to injure or kill a child.

TheCoolHare · 16/10/2026 13:51

Just how it is nowadays. It's the same people, in the same spaces every day at my DDs primary. The double yellows mean nothing at all.

It's the attitude of 'Oh, I'm only picking up/dropping off and won't be long' that they seem to say to themselves to justify it. When you combine it with a couple of dozen of them, it's the usual bunfight to get out of there.

Always the Mercs, BMWs and Audis too, isn't it? 👀

TigerRag · 16/10/2026 13:53

I live near a school. I'm glad because of the way the roads are laid out, this doesn't seem to be an issue. The parents are sensible enough to park on the side roads

I've noticed most of the offenders park at best inconsiderately and at times dangerously or illegally wherever they are - supermarket, street parking, car parks ect. When you do something every day, every time you get in your car, I suppose their awful moral compass is so desensitised to their inconsiderate and dangerous parking so they no longer think what they are doing is wrong.

I've seen many of the key offenders at our school parked in disabled bays, parked across 2 normal spaces, parked up on the curb so wheelchairs and prams can't get passed, parked on double yellows, double parked on a busy road with hazards flashing so they can use a cash machine ect.

I do wonder if some do it purely for attention. The worst offenders round us either have personalised numberplates or custom detailing on their car which means their cars stand out.

ChubbyCheeksCharlie · 16/10/2026 13:58

I don't know why councils don't send traffic wardens round more often. The takings would more than cover the overtime+bonus and booze for the council's Christmas party.

KassandraOfSparta · 16/10/2026 14:00

I live very near a primary school and have seen it all, and then some.

It boils down to the fact that some people just don;'t care. They don't care if they are parking like a dickhead, endangering others, block in residents. The ONLY thing that matters is being as close as humanly possible to the school gate to minimise their walking time.

When challenged it's all "I'll only be a minute", or "why do you care?" or "but it's raining!"

Selfish, lazy fuckers.

looselegs · 16/10/2026 14:08

I'm a childminder and have done school runs to our local primary school for 25 years. I actually gave them up in July, and the driving and parking was one of the reasons why.
I've seen it all- I could write a book about it.
But it's gradually got worse over the last few years. Parents parking on people's driveways then swearing at the owner when asked to move...parking on the zebra crossing.....shouting at the crossing lady and the traffic wardens....literally abandoning cars in the road so it's completely blocked....the entitlement of people is astounding. Unfortunately the head teacher has no jurisdiction over the area outside of school grounds so can only send out letters. So glad I don't go there anymore- I don't miss it!
