AIBU to expect a refund after wee flavoured hotel bed?

AIBU (fully open to being told I am!) to expect my money back, under Premier Inn's 'Good night guarantee'?

I'd been on the bed a while before I noticed an unmistakeable smell - the previous guest had wet it! My warmth and the pressure of me lying on it had released the odour, which when I got up and pulled back the bedsheets was overpowering! No significant dampness to be fair, but my pajamas were contaminated. I immediately told reception and they were great, very apologetic, and moved me to another room. But I had to have a thorough shower (at 11pm) which woke me up, and I felt 'icky' all night even in the fresh bed, so didn't sleep well.

I asked for my money back and they refused, saying the issue was resolved by moving me to another room. I can see where they're coming from, but on the other hand I DIDN'T have a good night, because of an oversight on their part!! I'm disappointed in PI. I thought their customer service was better than that. I'm a fairly regular guest but I'll be thinking twice before booking with them in future!

What do you think?

Sorry to hear this, I had a similar issue with Premier Inn this year with bedbugs in a hotel room.

The staff were great but the customer relations team accepted no responsibility and kept refusing refund requests.

In the end I sent about 5 emails each time politely saying I was dissatisfied with the response and would like to escalate. Eventually I got two rooms refunded for two nights but it must have taken 2-3 weeks of emailing.

None of us slept properly either night as we were flinching at every little thing after seeing massive bedbugs parading across the bed in the initial room I was in. Our trip was also ruined as we had to bin pyjamas and clothes, and spend our free day going shopping for bug sprays and a steamer to steam everything before taking home suitcases with potential bugs in them!

Send an email (or five!) to their guest relations team and they will refund you eventually.

@Matlocking- I told them the next morning. Apparently that’s no good!

'Am I weird for saying 'flavoured'? I mean a person can have coffee flavoured breath right, or a candle can be sandalwood flavoured? It's a way to describe scent as well as taste!'

Yep, you're weird! You can't say flavoured about a bed can you? You can say wee scented bed, or a bed that smelt of wee, but flavoured...no. HTH.

Engaged249 · 22/09/2026 17:31

Full refund and money for new pyjamas. I’d be writing to head office.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/09/2026 17:32

I think you deserve a refund.Yes they got you a new room but you had to inconvenience of
1.smelling piss
2.uprooting

I stayed in a IHG hotel where a bed hadn't been put in our room for my 9 yr old son when we arrived at 4am.I got a half refund.

Thats my worst fear. I make the children take everything in backpacks when we stay in places like this and hang them up on the coat rails. Not allowed to touch the floor or beds with them.

I know deep down it doesn’t help but it makes me feel a little safer that just the clothes on our backs would be the biggest problem.

Have to wonder about those guests that do bring them in with them though as that’s how they get there 🤢

I mean yes I think you're right to expect a refund. However - flavoured?! What?! Did you lick it?

I thought that too. Sorry op, the point just whizzed over my head 😅

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/09/2026 17:35

Just to add.We got a bed put in then a refund in the morning

Am I weird for saying 'flavoured'? I mean a person can have coffee flavoured breath right, or a candle can be sandalwood flavoured? It's a way to describe scent as well as taste!

Anyway, a mixed bag of opinions here it seems! I already phoned customer services. They kept me waiting 10 minutes only to come back and tell me no-deal. I think it's unfair as it was down to their negligence that they put me in a pissy bed. They must have known from changing the sheets after the previous guest. I wouldn't expect a refund if my poor sleep had resulted from, say, food poisoning from a takeaway, or having had a row with my boyfriend, you know? It was feeling so grossed out, and having an in-depth shower which invigorated me in the middle of the night, which I wouldn't have needed to have if it hadn't been for the circumstances!

I dont understand all the people on here saying its fine, they sorted you out, what more could they do. I think there are .bad faith responders on here.

Its absolutely not fine. The fact they had to move you proves the point. They moved you to a completely different bed. It was at YOUR inconvenience. You had already settled in for the night when you learned of the problem. Bodily fluids in that room had escaped cleaning. And they still wanted you to pay up. Its extremely poor. They deserve bad publicity for this.

Bamboozledbylife · 22/09/2026 17:37

Flavoured bleughhh. But no. That's not a way to describe a smell. Would you describe wet dog or trumps as a flavour?

However, I do agree they should have refunded you lol.

PlantainArama · 22/09/2026 17:40

Of course they ought to have refunded you! It's not like people usually travel with spare pyjamas. That would have totally ruined my night too.

Yeah it was mine too and I always thought it was irrational! When I arrived I used my UV torch to check the mattresses and I couldn't see anything which now only makes me more concerned that they're impossible to detect.

I posted on here at the time and someone said to run a hot iron over the sheet for a few minutes as it's the heat (usually of someone laying in bed) that brings them to the surface. Never going to a hotel without my iron again! Someone also said that they live in the bedframe so give that a good inspection and shake down too!

I put all of my bags down on a fabric chair at the end of the bed which was a big mistake. Had to throw out everything including the holdall. My family had also been in my room and had to throw their dressing gowns, pyjamas, socks etc away.

And they wouldn't refund for any of the things I threw away. I did consider small claims court but most of my stuff was inexpensive so I lost about £100 in total which was worth it as at least I didn't end up with a thousand pound fumigation problem at home! Had it have been hundreds worth of my belongings I would have pressed further.

Utterly terrible weekend. Hoping that one day we can laugh about it but it was eight months ago now and I'm not finding it funny yet! 😂

Yeah maybe in a few years it’s bad that they don’t refund what you’ve had to throw away.

I’ve heard they are not keen on peppermint so always take a spray and make sure the shower gel is a very minty one as well.

I’ve seen them heat treating static caravans before and that seemed a ballache let alone a whole house.

BeurialJimberley · 22/09/2026 15:26

Her pj’s were not ‘piss stained’, op has said there was no dampness at all. It can’t have been that bad if you’d been bloody laying on it a good while. You’re just angling for a free night. Couldn’t sleep because you felt icky, my arse.

They weren't wet but they'd picked up the odour alright, horribly! It was especially undesirable as I was catching a flight the next morning for a week's holiday. I not only had to pack them in ny suitcase (in a bin bag of course, but even so!) with my lovely neat holiday clothes, but had the fear of security deciding to go through my bag and discover them!

Definitely complain, you did not have a good night, you should have been refunded without question.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 22/09/2026 17:53

burnoutbabe · 22/09/2026 15:57

From their point of view they don’t know that the op didn’t create the issue? As the cleaners will deny they made the bed up when wet.

so it’s hard to prove it wasn’t the op, unlike say an external noise they could fix.

The sheets would have been sodden and stained if it were me! The sheets had been changed, and presumably the matress protector as well, but the mattress itself must have been soiled to the extent that with me lying on the freshly made bed 'awoke' the scent!

Well of course not! You didn’t give them a chance to resolve it. It’s like finishing a meal completely and then complaining to a restaurant and expecting a refund

Smelt would have done

BlackCatBea · 22/09/2026 18:49

Candles etc aren’t flavoured. You wouldn’t say vanilla flavoured shower gel (I assume) flavour only refers to something you taste with your mouth (unless you’re trying to be funny)

Erinsasaint · 22/09/2026 18:39

No, you wouldn't described a bed as 'wee-smelt' or a candle as 'vanilla-smelt'.

You'd use 'smelt' instead of 'tasted', not instead of 'flavoured'.
