To buy a dry robe as a winter coat?!

And yet here you are, bizarrely angry and bitter on the internet about someone else's perfectly sensible coat choice.

I am a little concerned that you need to consult strangers about a matter that's entirely up to you. That kind of coat is on sale, it sells well, ergo, plenty of people are buying it and, presumably, wearing it. Of course it's also up to you whether you consult people, but how could it possibly be unreasonable to buy a coat suitable for wet weather if you live in the South-West? Enjoy wearing it!

No, not really, that was an exaggeration. I just think it's weird to consult a bunch of strangers over the choice of a garment and that the poll question as to whether choosing a particular garment could be deemed "unreasonable" is quite ludicrous. The only way reasonableness would come into it would be if the price were way out of OP's budget, but they have not mentioned their budget, as far as I noticed.

I live in NW England and have a Beachbum one that I wear for going to watch the football during the cold, wet and windy Winter months.

It’s certainly not the epitome of elegance or style, but frankly when it’s a freezing cold Tuesday night in February and I’m sat in my seat in the Hill Dickinson, with driving rain and the wind blustering straight off the Royal Blue Mersey, all I care about is whether the coat keeps me warm and dry. Look on sports pursuit website for waterproof jackets. They sell end of line stock.
See what they have, and then Google reviews of them to see if they are decent - you want genuine hiking gear, like certain ranges in Rab, Patagonia, marmot, Berghaus etc, not fashion brands or fashion versions.
Although they're only waist length I got a waterproof rab softshell jacket and a thin fleecy layer to wear underneath it. Really warm, genuinely waterproof. Total was around £150 and they've lasted years.

I work in primary schools on windy rain-swept Dartmoor. One of my colleagues does all her winter playground duties in a massive dryrobe and she is the warmest and driest of all of us! I say go for practicality over looks.

(Speaking as someone who wears a massive thermal neck-warmer on playground duty in midwinter to keep the wind/rain from going down my neck...)

My very stylish DS lives in the same part of UK and she bought one to use for dog walking. She thinks it’s a good idea so it’s good enough for me.

The Equestrian market has a number of similar coats designed for riding instructors standing out teaching in all weathers. They are a bit less voluminous!

I've got one for sorting the ducks in winter as they get so muddy. It's a Regatta one and brilliant for what I need. The ducks don't care how I keep dry and warm!

Are these acceptable if youre not a riding instructor or not doing anything to do with horses? Some people are quite strict about how and where dry robes should be worn!
(I sometimes do cross country races in the winter and lots of runners seem to have them - sometimes they get changed under them, sometimes they are just for warmth, before or after a race)

I've got a regatta one. It looks wanky and I feel like a bit of an idiot in it but it does keep me warm and dry when walking the dog or standing on the sidelines. The hood is rubbish though, too small so it sits too far back on my head.

Get an actual Dry Robe. They’re amazing and there is no other brand that come close to the quality and cosiness! Be prepared for people - mostly
men- to call you a Dry Robe Wanker whichever brand you go with. There’s something about women wearing clothes that disguises their figure and keep them warm and dry that pisses a lot of blokes off!
I love mine but live by the sea, open water swim, walk on the beach daily,
walk the dog is howling weather, go camping etc and importantly couldn’t give a shite what anyone else thinks!
Can be used as picnic blanket, to sit on outside, as emergency child warmer in the back of the car etc

Go for it. I have been thinking of getting ine too. They are great for being outdoors during kids sports training and the school run. I dont think any winter coats are nice except for fur coats, but you obviously cant wear them during rain.

All the people who think dry robes can only be worn within a 50 metre radius of water.....might also think the equestrian jacket can only be worn in close proximity to a horse!

Dickheads are the ones insisting that you can only wear a changing robe near water! It’s bizarre, can you imagine another coat that people insist can ONLY be used under certain circumstances.
