To buy a dry robe as a winter coat?!

I live in the south west. From October to March, our weather is 99% driving rain and howling wind. I’ve tried over the years to find a decent winter coat that keeps me warm and dry. I’ve found a few that work somewhat, including a lovely M&S rain jacket, but it’s a bit thin.

im considering just biting the bullet and buying a big waterproof changing coat from regatta and being cosy.

But does it look a bit wanky?! Is it okay?!

They are soooo cosy, warm and dry. I can't wait for the wet windy weather to wear it.

I’d buy a Uniqlo micro thin warm layer jacket thingy and wear it under your nice m&s coat to be honest.

You’ll get so much wear out of it you’ll wonder how you managed without it.

There's a FB group called Dryrobe Wankers I think.

I think the hate comes from people wearing them pretending they've just been for a cold water swim or an ice plunge when the most they've done is gone to ASDA.

Ive seen the group and it feels like they're trying to gate keep an item of clothing, which was designed for a specific thing but became widely popular.
Firstly a person might have done a sea swim and then gone to asda....or they happen to think a dry robe was a warm practical coat for another purpose, and happened to be asda.

Yoga pants, tracksuits, trainers were all originally designed for sport and yet are often worn for leisure (no one actually checks when you buy them)
And id reckon 99% of folk wearing a baseball cap have never played baseball.....

Oh I agree. I'm wearing trackie bottoms and haven't been on a track since 1978.

I don't give a tinkers rap what people wear as long as they don't frighten my chickens : )

I have that one. I wear it for sports spectator stuff and camping but I would happily wear it for anything I didn’t need to be smart for. I wouldn’t wear it to my office based job.

I have a Dry Robe and it’s one if my best buys. If you’re a dog walker or have to spend the weekend on the touchline they are a worthy investment.

BUT they are MASSIVE so mine lives in my boot!

I got one for doing horses in as it rains constantly in autumn/winter. I get too hot in it and more often or not take it off and get drenched. I bought a cheap Peter Storm jacket and it suits me better because I just have a vest and riding tights on. I also got waterproof chaps for really bad days . These items dry out quickly. The robe thing doesn’t. I would definitely be too hot to commute in it.

The hoods on regatta dry robes are terrible! They are warm and keep you dry, but the hoods are tiny....unless I have a big head....🤣

I am a cold mortal, on meds and so forth, and I wouldn't be without mine in the rainy freezing winter months. I also take it to the camps and festivals I attend, because unlike this summer, there are generally bloody cold episodes, winds and driving rain.
I am not a wild swimmer and I couldn't give less of a fig for being described as a dryrobe wanker. I am a dry and blissfully warm dryrobe wanker.

My problem with them is they're so bloody big &, like someone else said, you end up cold because they let a big draught up.
I thought I'd solved it by buying an xs one from Tesco. Still too fecking big !

I have one, bright blue and hideous but wonderfully warm and dry for dog walks. I don’t give a hoot what it looks like. It’s very functional for me.

I bought a DR style coat from Home Bargains last year for about £20. It’s brilliant for dog walking etc. I couldn’t give a rats arse what people think.

Dryrobes are like Crocs - ugly, but have totally smashed their design brief and are incredibly efficient at their assigned role. I have one, am aware of the stigma if you are not actually within 10 feet of a body of water, and wear it anyway because it’s bloody brilliant at keeping you warm and dry. They are so snug, the warm snuggly feeling it gives you kind of acts as a shield against any disapproving looks. You simply don’t care 🤣 Go for it, you won’t regret it.

They are fine for actually walking around - as soon as you want to go inside and take it off they are ridiculously huge, trail on the floor and just end up in everyone’s way and being trodden on.

As a parent who stands in the rain during rugby season and has a dog I put off buying one for years as I don’t like the look of them, but then I found one I liked, it was £250 but it was stylish and I’m into season 2 not and adore it, it is from Holland Cooper, apparently it’s a famous brand, I had no idea as most of my clothes are supermarket, Vinted, next etc!! Someone I worked with told me!! Anyhow don’t regret it at all!!

Not read the whole thread but I have one, bought it for sea swimming but have tried wearing it for walking when the weather is good and don’t find it holds up to heavy/driving rain.
Lovely and cosy but not fully waterproof for some bizarre reason.

I haven’t RTFT so someone may have mentioned this already but I’d recommend an Oodie coat. Fully waterproof. They feel very lightweight but I’ve never felt so warm and cosy in any other coat. And an awful lot cheaper than £300.

https://deltaroam.com/collections/coats-and-jackets these do a shorter version of a long length dry robe. I have the long one and it is amazing for dog walks in the rain/wind/snow. I am seriously considering the shorter version now for everyday wear. The quality is excellent.

You beat me to it every time a thread comes up like this I praise my one, best coat I've ever had.

I think it’s ok for sidelines at the football or rugby but not for going to the office or a restaurant

I live in Cornwall and have a Seasalt Plant Hunter coat. It's great, comes to above knee, and has enough padding/fleece hood to make it warm without it being overly hot. QVC have them half price at the moment
