AIBU to oppose housing 1,000 undocumented young men near Piddington?

Just because you may have the misfortune to be born under a particular regime or ideology, doesn't mean that all individuals in a country conform to that regime. Does this even need pointing out?

I am still waiting to find out why this is being done to the country. And other countries across Europe. The UK has had more immigration in the last twenty years than previous centuries combined. Why? It certainly doesn't bring many positives to the country. Most aren't net contributers and therefore just add to the ballooning welfare, NHS and education costs. Saying the NHS would collapse without immigrants is probably true, but it didn't have to end up that way. We've plenty of our own people that could have been trained up - they've had this for decades.

To get a tourist or student visa you kinda need to show who you are you don't have criminal past.

I'd also be happy with ending these visas from those from certain nations.

Visas are a good way to check. Some countries do this instead for all arrivals.

That's because most people don't want them here, there or anywhere.
And who can blame them?

Maybe all the people that think they bring lovely fluffiness to the country can open up their houses to them.

Wonder where these meetings with asylum seekers are meant to take place. Perhaps in church halls with Mary Berry providing the macaroons as a star guest? We are being laughed at, and it's no surprise with ridiculous and unrealistic suggestions.

The point is, that currently 1 in 5 of the U.K population was not born here.

Illegal immigrants account for only 1.5% of all immigrants. That's it. 1.5%.

The amount of hysteria about this 1.5% - that they are all likely criminals, rapists and so on - is totally disproportionate when you consider this in the context of the other 98.5% of migrants.

Whst should be totally obvious, is that literally anyone could come here from any background and with any 'intention' - whether they are students, people in working visas, tourists whatever. In any of these demographics, there will be a range of attitudes, behaviours and perspectives.

Reform and associated media aim to convince people that this 1.5% are going to be the cause of all problems in the U.K. Clearly this cannot be the case. Clearly this is distraction propaganda.

The issue is you can’t tell who is a risk, and we’ve seen some horrendous crimes. Generally the gov should ensure we have a system of entry that is better checked.

Students and other visitors aren't coming here in unmanageable group numbers.

What are you so terrified about?

Rather than just jumping on the GB News / Reform fear-mongering bandwagon, you could try talking to the people you are so keen to stereotype. Why would you not?

I wish some documentary-maker unbiased and with an open mind would actually go in to one of these asylum centres and talk to all the people there. Find out their stories. Ask them why they came here particularly. What is their plan? Assess their attitudes.

This would be very interesting as an attempt at an unbiased documentary (if such a thing is possible). Let people see behind the populist headlines to the diversity of people, personalities and attitudes, rather than just talking about migrants as 'they.' It might help some people to make up their own minds about whether 'they' are all criminals and sex offenders, rather than just believing whatever Farage wants you to believe.

Foreign students make up over 24% of the student population. There are over 600k of them. There are 85k asylum seekers.

Exactly Blossomtoes. For instance, we have a university within 2 miles of our house with a huge intake from some of 'those countries' Reform voters are so exercised about. Probably thousands of 'young men of fighting age' (ffs!) come every year. And live in the same uni halls as 'our women' (to adopt the TR lingo).

By the way, I saw the men on the TR march and, as a casual observation, they are a lot more scary and likely to have a questionable relationship to the law and decent society, than any Pakistani student or ME student ever come across.

When I walk down my local high street I would literally have no idea who might be an illegal immigrant, student, born here, here on a work visa, tourist - you name it. Yet our local community still functions as well as anywhere. Probably better actually.

Per capita, people of Pakistani heritage are arrested at a rate slightly above the national average and the White British.

There probably are still people who feel similarly. It would make sense for Burnham to put the accommodation near to them.

It might help of you didn't just dive straight into the textbook leftie populist sayings. You've already hit us with Farage, GBN and Tommy Robinson. I don't share your fluffy view of those illegally entering in large numbers. The onus isn't on UK citizens to adapt and be trusting, it's up to those entering to respect the laws, social norms and culture of their host country. If a stable pattern of behaviour had been established, there might be a different approach to how migration is viewed.

The Piddington residents have found out the hard way why it's not too clever to be so inviting. Perhaps Burnham might roll this out now across those other refugee welcome here towns and villages. I agree.

Well, to be honest, I don't know why they would put 500 men from anywhere next to a tiny village, because people will always kick up a stink. Just put them in London or other cities / large towns and nobody would even notice.

It could be dealt with in a way that causes less backlash. There are posts where people decry those who say no thanks and how bad those people are.

The obvious way to avoid a lot of tension is to put the men near where those welcoming people are.

Of course Piddington was welcoming but now are worried, but maybe the steadfast will stay welcoming. If you keep telling everyone his terrible the objectors are you can really object (general you).

They are more likely. Look at the per capita data. Also they come from nations where VAWG is a lot higher and women are treated very poorly
