AIBU to oppose housing 1,000 undocumented young men near Piddington?

1000 replies

PiddingtonFan · 16/09/2026 09:38

We dont need anymore undocumented young males.

1000 proposed to be housed near Piddington. Young males from a different culture.

AIBU to agree with them. Enough undocumented males. Too many males overwhelming a small population. 😪

I don't want undocumented males coming here en masse either, but I've said YABU because whilst they are processed they need to be housed somewhere and a former military base is an isolated and secure place to do this (and much cheaper than building new detention centres).

I don't want people to commit crime but they do, so we need prisons, and no-one wants a prison near them either.

I don't want people to be dangerously mentally ill, but they are, so secure hospitals exist. I don't suppose people were overjoyed to have those near their homes either.

Etc.

We can just deport them..and whilst we hold them we do it in an centre that holds them and doesn't allow them to freely mix in British society

What per capita data has been posted on this thread? And why are you derailing the thread? What are you getting out of it?

Edited

And again you deflect and ignore my original point on how the UK government deemed Rwanda to be legally safe and was and they changed the law to make Rwanda legal.

On other threads I've seen you ignore all the data on per capita. Especially when a report or data is sent. You ignore it.

I've been having that debate on this thread, why don't you follow those chains of posts rather than claim you've provided 'evidence' which you clearly haven't?

Your repeated 'per capita' refrains on a thread that isn't even about per capita are bizarre to say the least.

A spokesman for Piddington said that they actually do have a prison near them and it causes absolutely no problems and therefore nobody minds. It is HMP Bullingdon, which is a notoriously rough prison.

It is pretty much look at Aus.

I have a strong suspicion that geography helps Australia

Classic you move to ignore my original response to you which I reiterated. You just ignore the original response, focus on the mundane and just ignore the main substance.

It’s not that much in it for crossing distance at closest point. Especially now boats are coming from further away across the channel.

They were about the same size and overloaded too.

Your original response which was 'oh it's you again'? Do you take people who talk to you like that seriously? Because I don't. It's just a deflection tactic.

You also said you provided evidence. You giving your opinion is not 'evidence'.

But they are not being held securely are they. Have you not seen what is happening in Braintree, Colchester and Chelmsford in relation to the asylum camp at Wethersfield?

The marked difference is that as a whole Category B prisoners tend to stay in.

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/09/2026 16:20

I do live near where 500 asylum seekers were housed, it was in hotel accommodation and caused a lot of local issues. I know one woman that was physically assaulted , one friend found a guy peeing in her garden, local school girls harassed, got close to a large fight on a green area of the brothers and other young blokes at the school of aforementioned schoolgirls and the asylum seekers.

I did know one of them, he was ok and volunteered on a a community garden project and had already been in Europe for about 5 years. They moved them all a few months ago. I’m ok walking through my local park now as I was sick of being gawped at. My Dad was a non white immigrant who arrived with documentation and a visa with a right to work in the very late 1950’s.

I think people that want to assist should put themselves forward to take one in to spare rooms in their homes. My English Grandparents had Jewish refugees in WW2 for a while before my Grandmother joined the WAAF.

I explained what the gov did after the uksc said it was illegal..it passes a law making it illegal as parliament is sovereign and can change things that were illegal to be legal

Contain4 · 16/09/2026 14:26

This is exactly what it boils down to!!

Too many people just say things like - we don’t want people coming over here on boats, send them back, we don’t want them in this military base or anywhere else 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

They say these things but offer no sensible solutions or alternatives and then moan that nothing is changing.

I just think they like the sound of their own voices perhaps because I can’t see that anyone can be so dense to say these things and not think about why they won’t work.

Immigration has reduced.
Efforts are being made to reduce it further.

People weren’t happy that hotels were being used so the government chose to use an empty military base that is designed to house hundred of men.

You can’t say you oppose it but not offer any alternative solutions.

If posters think hotels are a better solution then say why - it’s a discussion forum.

Some posters have made really good points, whilst others want things to happen overnight or unattainable solutions.

It’s never going to be reduced until it’s made less desirable to come here. How many other countries offer what we do if people are granted their asylum claim? There’s a reason why they travel through so many countries and pay to come here and it’s because they know once their claim is processed they can claim benefits and bring the rest of their family over and claim for them as well. If we make people who are not born here pay into the system for a few years before taking from it I guarantee the amount of people arriving here would drop. I wouldn’t expect to go to another country and have the state prop me up so I don’t see why we should do it here.

On the one hand I agree. On the other, I suspect the majority of the Libdem residents were just fine with them being housed elsewhere.

I stand by piddington but agree that it's rather rich they had posters up supporting assluym.seekees by the lib dems and now this

Alternativelyviewed · 16/09/2026 17:28

@Contain4 the UN has cristised us for giving assluym to people who don't need it.
So that needs looking at . All these other ways of entry need stopping .
We shouldn't be accepting anyone who self select and foist themsleves on us at all.

We need to leave the ehcr.
We need to reduce the lure and pull.

Contain4 · 16/09/2026 12:30

I’m not sure if the law technically sees them as criminals but as you say we have no idea of their past history.

So they cannot be treated as prisoners as they’re not but having this sort of more controlled environment, which has similarities to an open prison, where the infrastructure is set up to deal with mass people, is an improvement instead of just shoving them anywhere and hoping for the best.

I’ve never worked for the military but I’ve worked in open prisons and ex military basis and it seems a way better solution then random hotels.

I don’t think they should be treated like criminals but I do think more restrictions, eg curfews, mental health assessments (I think they may have these), background checks etc would be beneficial for them and to the British public.

I think it just makes sense to put them all together in an area built to house them for long periods, before dispersing them once they’ve had all of their checks etc.

Do you think it was better when they were in the hostels and why?

But where iS the money and funding for this ..

We have many people on our streets who need this help and we can't give it.

Newyearawaits · 16/09/2026 17:36

Ablondiebutagoody · 16/09/2026 09:53

They have to be housed somewhere and, like the local MP, I think they will probably assimilate nicely and be a benefit to the community. It's currently not very diverse around there.

My thoughts exactly.
The amount of prejudice in Piddington is astonishing and from an all white community.

Costs are incredibly high now don’t worry. £56k per person for the one in one out scheme. £78m so far.

And that’s not including all the other stuff here and o/s.

No !!

First, benefits for asylum seekers are tiny - £5 a day plus a few extras. There is no evidence at all that the benefits system is a pull factor. It's social networks. Labour has scrapped the family reunion option and in any case, only one in five refugees applied for it.

Basically, deterrence through unpleasantness doesn't work. And to be clear, refugees, which the right obsess about are a small proportion of all migrants.

From a right-wing perspective, you should be praising Labour. The average number of refugees accepted under the previous Labour government was 10K a year annually. This climbed to nearly 70K under the Tories, and has gone down to 50K under Labour, with far more refusals. Net migration has also fallen significantly.

You are getting what you want, and yet for some reason you aren't pleased.

The site boundary is 0.5 miles from the village of Piddington.

I am also wondering what attractions Piddington has. No shop, no cafe, no pub.

I doubt anyone will be going there.
