MIL ignoring DS allergies

My elderly MIL lives with us, she’s in her 70s but has health issues so my husband doesn’t want ti leave her on her own. Honestly I’ve had quite a few issues with this arrangement so much so that I’m genuinely planning on ending my marriage. But that’s not the issue. Recently my DS (4 years) went into anaphylactic shock and we’ve learnt he has a severe nut allergy. The doctors have advised us to keep the house COMPLETELY nut free until all tests are done and we know exactly which nuts he can’t have. It was bloody traumatic, ambulance had to be called and he now has epi pens. Tonight my MIL goes Tesco with my husband and brings back…. You guessed it.. nuts! FUDGING 3 bags of walnuts, peanuts and almonds. Are you FK me? I say to my husband what is going on and he doesn’t see an issue with it, saying she’ll keep them in her room in a sealed box and won’t eat them around him. What do I do without causing a scene? I wanted to scream and shout and throw the nuts out but I don’t want to wake DS!

AIBU- DS will be fine, the nuts are in one bedroom
AINBU- MIl and husband need to F off

Your DH is your main problem here.

andthat · 14/09/2026 22:04

They need to fuck right off.

Sit them down. Explain this could kill him and make it clear that if they continue to bring nuts into the house they are risking his life so you will have to leave.

idiots.

bilbowe · 14/09/2026 22:05

Nah, they’d be going unapologetically straight in the bin

Tell me about it .

Wow! Can’t believe your DH didn’t stop her from bringing nuts into your house. I have a severe allergy and my house has to be nut free and I’m an adult. Can’t imagine how scary that must have been to see your child go through that.

Herewegoagain57 · 14/09/2026 22:07

If your DH would rather keep the peace with his mum than save his son going through another allergic reaction then it would be end of marriage for me.

The worst thing is, there’s a chance the allergy clinic may specify which nuts he needs to avoid and which nuts are fine. They can’t even wait a week for that diagnosis! He’s their son and grandson! Beggars effing belief

I wouldn't say 70 is elderly. She could be living with you for another 25 years!

Merrybandofpirates · 14/09/2026 22:09

Go. Can you go and stay with your parents? I think it does need to be a simple, “Right, you both knew the situation and you’ve chosen to put him at risk so we’re going.”

Your husband sounds utterly useless. He can’t be alone with your kid.

It really does.

They are minimising the very real risk to your sons life.

ThatLilacTiger · 14/09/2026 22:10

Tell the bitch to fuck off to a house of her own to eat her nuts. You do not mess with nut allergies. I would have to believe anyone who did this was intentionally trying to kill my child and we can all imagine how well that would go down.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 14/09/2026 22:10

The nuts being in her room wont stop tje nut proteins being on her hands as she touches doirs, taps etc.

You cant make the world nut free, but you can keep your sons home safe.

Pernicketywishes · 14/09/2026 22:11

What the hell is wrong with your DH???

DrCoconut · 14/09/2026 22:12

There are documented cases of grandparents killing their grandchildren with allergens in an attempt to prove it's all a fad or something. Have DH and MIL read any of these?

Arlanymor · 14/09/2026 22:13

That's appalling, your son deserves to be safe in his own home. I used to live with someone with a peanut allergy at uni and our house was fully nut-free. One night she went into anaphylactic shock and it turned out that the boyfriend of one of our flatmates had been out playing darts earlier in the day and had had ONE cube of Cadbury's Fruit and Nut before coming over to ours and then at some point they had both used the TV remote control. They both sound ignorant at best and selfish at worst.

FancyKitten · 14/09/2026 22:13

I would instruct DH to get the nuts from her room & remove them from the house straight away.

WildLeader · 14/09/2026 22:14

I’d be raging.

the nuts either go back, tonight, or in the bin. They’re not going to remain in the house until the all clear has come through

your son’s life is worth more than a hankering for some nuts.

tabby love.

Anyahyacinth · 14/09/2026 22:14

I’d be getting evidence of that…receipt / photos…what an appalling parent DH is

This is exactly what the allergy clinic should do.

DS2 is allergic to cashew nuts. Which we worked out as he was eating one when he had a reaction. But we then kept the house clear of all nuts until he was tested. The allergy team then told us he was also allergic to pistachios (they go with cashews) but luckily no other nuts.

I hope the testing goes well and you give your DH a talk on the seriousness of it

andweallsingalong · 14/09/2026 22:15

I would be leaving that house until your DH can be trusted.

I think your title is misleading because DH, your son's other parent took her to the supermarket and authorised her to bring the nuts into your home against medical advise. So he is the one that can't be trusted.

NoisyMonster678 · 14/09/2026 22:16

Its a massive safeguarding issue your DH has chosen to ignore and for your childs' safety you need to ban the nuts from the house on the doctors orders.

You are right to be alarmed.

Your monster in law needs to be told to leave, or respect the rules and your DH has to man up, and stop allowing his childg to be in danger.

Come down on them like a tonne of bricks.

PurpleThistle7 · 14/09/2026 22:19

Absolutely no chance. I’d lose my mind and burn the stupid things.

I am anaphylactic to shellfish and we have 0 shellfish in the house. My in-laws don’t bring it into their home if we visit (we live overseas so they can do this). No one wants me to die so they protect me. It’s terrifying to have your throat close up like that and I’d do anything to protect my child from that. My husband’s grandparents didn’t really understand and had this whole shellfish extravaganza at a family reunion and I just took my daughter and left and had dinner out so my husband could clean the kitchen up.

so no. I’d be walking straight into her room and getting those things out. Right now. And I’d absolutely die on that hill to protect my kid.

Shoobadadoo · 14/09/2026 22:21

She needs to live elsewhere. I would be at ultimatum time

littlemousebigcheese · 14/09/2026 22:21

Your DH is the problem. He cares more about his mothers feelings than his sons life?!
