AIBU? DH and family holiday

Mrshermitt · 27/08/2026 11:41

FIL birthday this year and theyve planned a family holiday abroad but it’s 1.5k each and at Christmas time. I am unwell so I can’t go anyway and we can’t afford to spend money like that now I’m not working. We have 3 kids so looking at 7.5k for all of us.

DH desperately wants to go and I’ve just said go because I’m sick of hearing about it. I can barely manage taking care of myself some days but somehow I have to figure out with the kids. He’s going for 7 days and coming back on Boxing Day.

Can I ask would your husband do to this to you and your family or even consider it? Especially at that time of the year too?

If it's true that hysterectomy is the end of the line for endometriosis, then shouldn't you be pushing for this OP? So that you can get back on your feet, back to work, and set both you and your husband free from a truly miserable marriage.

this I can't imagine being in that much pain all the time.

TaptheCap · 29/08/2026 08:09

DH and I go on holiday separately on the regular but there's no way he'd go on this one given the circumstances!

Oganesson118 · 29/08/2026 08:41

My husband probably would but him and his family are strangely insular and his mum is chronically manipulative. He missed my 40th to go away with his mum and sister so this wouldn't surprise me from him. I do know it's uncharacteristic of most normal rational families though!

ThatWhiteElephant · 29/08/2026 09:13

No, 100% my dh would not go.

  1. you’re ill
  2. he wouldn’t go on a family holiday without his immediate family
  3. he wouldn’t be away from his kids and wife on Christmas Day.
  4. he definitely wouldn’t take the kids and leave me at home.

in fact I just asked my dh, he said ‘No and who is going look after you ?’.

I think the issue with this illness is there is no real end date so a bit like do you put your life on hold forever? I get the Op is struggling and my heart goes out to her but she has expressed she doesn't like nor Im assuming love her husband she is merely needing his help. I think it would be a situation where maybe some compromise would help.

rainbowstardrops · 29/08/2026 09:51

It’s entirely up to your FIL to do what he likes for his birthday but it’s a bit shitty of him to want his family to come on an expensive holiday when a) he knows you wouldn’t be able to and b) you guys can’t afford it!
He could have had a party and then gone on his Caribbean holiday!
I think your husband is going on and on about the holiday and umming and ahhing because he wants you to just snap and tell him to bloody go because then he’s got a get out of jail free card that he can use against you!
I get that he wants to celebrate with his family but not to the detriment of his actual wife and children. That’s shitty behaviour.

TheSmellOfSea · 29/08/2026 10:07

What a dreadful family and h.

I really feel for you. Can you move closer to your family?

AnaisVB · 29/08/2026 10:13

I can understand that he might miss out on a one off trip with his family and that must be hard. But there are priorities here, and even for whatever reason that isn’t you ( which is a real shame) his children are still young and I think it’s bizarre that he would go to the Caribbean without his young family in these circumstances. You are the mother of his children even if the separation is on the cards you are still married and living together. But I do agree with others that have said don’t tell
him to go if you don’t want him to. Let him figure this out on his own, like you will have to.

I hope you have some good support groups for the Endo pain and the GP is supporting you. Sending love and strength x

So he's fucking off for a hoilday over christmas while his 3 kids and unwell wife stay at home? Thats grounds for divorce.

This.... no matter what the holiday is for.... this is what is happening. How utterly selfish. Id tell him not to bother coming back (even though you told him to go). I feel sorry for you and your kids. His own family should also have a look at themselves if they are encouraging him to leave his poorly wife and kids alone at christmad so he can have a holiday.

Legolaslady · 29/08/2026 10:21

springtome · 28/08/2026 20:17

for Christmas Day? You seriously think any parent would see missing Christmas with their kids as a break?

Yes if are feeling very ill and can't look after their children.

MadMadaMim · 29/08/2026 10:31

It's his dad's 60th.
His whole family is going away to celebrate.
As a family, you can't afford to all go.
You don't want to go.
He desperately wants to go.
You think his family are inconsiderate for booking a holiday because your health is not up to it.
You think he's selfish for not wanting to celebrate his father's milestone birthday.

Honestly, you sound entitled. Others' plans shouldn't have to be based on one person's requirements alone. You clearly can go on holiday as you've just been on one a few months ago. You have family an hour away.

What is the issue? Like actually?

You have plenty of time to make arrangements. You're not working. Go and stay with your family for Christmas. Arrange for someone to come and pick you up. Or ask family to come to you and help you host

It's 7 days. If you're able to think about leaving him - that's way more days to do it alone .

Honestly, I'm reading this as a person who's struggling at the moment and a bit sad and frustrated who hasn't yet accepted their medical condition BUT wants everyone around them to feel that way too, inadvertently.

Another option would be for him to go with the children and you stay at home . But as you say he'd starve and live in a pit without you, that may not be practical

IMO your view is clouded by the already existing animosity , resentment and dislike of your DH and his family.

I hope you get some resolution with endo. It is a horrible, misunderstood debilitating condition. And it makes people cranky, can cause mental health illness and gets little empathy from others. How we manage that is our choice. How we decide to live with that is our choice.

Mrshermitt · 27/08/2026 14:19

No the big 60 🙄

WTAF? There is no "BIG 60". I will agree that many celebrate the "BIG 50", but after that, it's not until 65/70 or the birthday the year you retire.
What a bunch of selfish, self-centered, self-aggrandized shite ILs they are. It sounds like they have zero redeeming features and passed that trait unto your AHWNVDH (azz hole whiny not very dear husband).

Next year will the ILs decide to celebrate the FIL passing his PSA test by going to Aruba next Christrmas? I mean, really!

I feel for you, @Mrshermitt . No decent person would ever even consider such a thing and no decent ILs would put someone in that position. Even if you were in perfect health, a good person would never abandon their family on Christmas. No one should want to do that.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 29/08/2026 11:06

Redredrumdedrum · 27/08/2026 14:46

£1.5k pp sounds really cheap for the Caribbean over Christmas

I'm sure, in the end, it will cost more than that. Food, drink, gift for dear old Dad...who knows what else. If it's an AI, this sounds cheap when you add in travel costs. I suppose they could have gotten a great deal on air fare.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 29/08/2026 11:10

bababamama · 27/08/2026 14:48

I’d have said go but you have to take the kids.

They cannot afford the children to go. It's 1.5K per person. They cannot really afford the "man" (I refuse to call him a husband or father) to go.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 29/08/2026 11:12

Havingaswimmoose · 27/08/2026 14:44

OP - They’ve already booked it! DH is adding himself on. But I am done this is the end for me.

Will people please realise that the in-laws did not invite the husband.

YES THEY DID! That's why they keep bugging him almost daily about going. 🙄

Extremely cheap. Food alone would cost more.

What is the issue?

They can’t afford to all go, his wife isn’t well enough to go, he wants to to leave his three young children over Christmas…
Those are the issues.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 29/08/2026 11:25

Thesillysocks · 27/08/2026 16:31

To be fair with the poster you quoted, this was my understanding of your previous post as well, that you only went back with him because you needed him to care for you and/or earn money as you couldn’t work yourself. On this basis, I can’t really blame him for prioritising himself even if it meant leaving you behind.

And of course, to many MNers, he doesn't need to prioritize HIS children either.

No wonder this world is so screwed up. People have become so much more selfish and self-centered than ever, ever before.

I think your husband should leave you. It sounds almost abusive the way you're describing the. Relationship, and it doesn't actually make sense what you're saying, it appears that your weaponizing your sickness. There's no reason why one Christmas his dad is 60. Once your kids, kids will have many christmases. You didn't need to make it this emotionally loaded, but it just sounds like you're emotionally manipulative, and this is another way, if you do it, this is the most bizarre thing I've ever read. But even if you're so your sick now, but you're saying you're so sick that you know, you're gonna be sick at closeness, and in the 4 months, there's no way that anyone can help you arrange childcare and you couldn't have had a conversation about that if you couldn't afford to go. That's fine. They're not your parents that the 60th birthday is a big birthday and go on a broadest, fine too. Turn, it would be nice for the kids, but there's no money, and that's it.Really.I was hate for someone to try and control me in that way, and when they couldn't get me to not do something, they just tried to use emotional manipulation instead.

Jesus fuck. Imagine calling it emotionally manipulative to say dads with young children
should spend Christmas with them if it’s within their power. I’m emotionally manipulative too then, I don’t have any health issues but if dh opted for a holiday we couldn’t all afford and fucked off over Christmas then I would not bother spending money on marriage counselling, I’d go straight to divorce.

And the "man" in this instance has had 60 birthdays and Christmases with his father and as little as FOUR with his children.

You sound very dismissive of the children as if they are of no importance to anyone.

When you marry, your spouse and then children become your first priority. Normal people realize this. Selfish, self-centered, abusive people do not.

This post nails it OP, and @TigersAndToucs post earlier. I’m also sure they are both hard to read, much less dwell on and deeply think about what they are saying and what that means for you, your marriage and future.

im sorry you are suffering with endo and that sounds like it it is all encompassing you at the moment. I’m sorry, it’s unfair and especially with young kids. I bet this wasn’t how you thought life would be. You sound fed up and angry, very very angry and incredibly resentful. That sounds exhausting and a terrible way for you to be around your family, and children. But I wonder if it’s about the illness and everything happening to you rather than your husbands specific actions about a week in December?

You seem to have effectively made your DH your carer, whether he wants to or not and @MadMadaMim has made some really important points in a very thoughtful helpful post about developing independence which has to be a priority for you.

As opposed to others on this thread saying their DH wouldn’t do this, their relationships will be based on trust, love and respect. Partnerships. Your marriage is not that.

Your marriage is dead. Does your DH know that you came back to him solely so he would care for you? Is he accepting of that? It is not a way to live long term and fair to no one, not you, him, or especially your children if not what he wants.

Whilst he is on his holiday, maybe he can come back to you two being separated and use the time from now until then to arrange that. See what benefits you are entitled to, how will 50:50 work, have you applied for PIP? His family may well see that your marriage is dead and he is burning out from caring and being the breadwinner, so they are encouraging a break. It doesn’t sound like your family holiday was that for him. He deserves a break. And so do you, from the huge resentment of your life you are carrying. You need to change this up to be able to move forward. 💐

You’ve not considered the children at all in this post.
The fact he’s willing to go on holiday rather than spend Christmas with his young children is what most people have an issue with.
It’s selfish and the other issues surrounding this situation are just white noise.

Other posters have nailed it- the issue is his dc need him and he’s like I can’t afford to take you kids and your mum really struggles to look after you and it will be Christmas but FUCK IT IM GOING TO PARTY WITH PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT. that’s the issue, that he’s a shitty dad.

He needs to grow up and be a proper parent to his children. He's spending money he doesn't have to go on a jolly with his dad, when his own children will be without him at Christmas, and when his wife clearly will struggle to cope. He's a disgrace.
