AIBU to think that the amount of processed snacks people buy in their grocery shopping is getting ridiculous? Watching people share their grocery shop on instagram etc and I can’t see what meals they can even make as it’s all snacks?? And then they say oh grocery shopping is so expensive!Do people really do this? I don’t buy any biscuits, fizzy drinks (18-20 pack slabs) or crisps as a part of me weekly family shop. I buy the meat, veg and pantry items. That is my weekly shopping. I buy one packet of oat bars for my DCs lunches. If my dc want a snack they have fruit, yogurt, homemade flapjacks etc.

Exactly!

Yes, yes, bad for our health but newsflash - nobody gets out of this alive. On my death bed I’m pretty sure I won’t be thinking “man, I wish I ate less crisps”.

You won't need to wait until your death bed. People who eat diets high in UPFs end up in their 50s and 60s with metabolic disease, heart disease, cancers, cognitive decline, type 2 diabetes and all its complications, early onset dementias, Alzheimer's, etc etc, and you can spend what remains of your life suffering from those and other debilitating health problems - aka, all the diseases of ageing that we now know are in fact diseases of diet and lifestyle.

God these posts are tedious.

One packet of oat bars for my children's lunches 😂

Tut tut @BleedinglyObvious! What were you doing with a ginger beer!😱

I wonder if shredded wheat would have have the same restorative effect!

@Calliopespa ,this reply says a lot more about you. It was posted to try to wind me up, and the contents of the second paragraph are ridiculous. Would you really try to feed someone with dangerously low blood sugar a dry no added sugar cereal ? Given that you didn't know that shredded wheat didn't mean Shreddies, then you probably might.

You've also accused me of "being quick in judging the habits of ...those with disability.". Given that I have members of my close family with disabilities, you have completely twisted my posts to suit your agenda.

As I pp, I have close family with disabilities. One, a wheelchair user, lives independently and eats very healthily. One, limited by arthritic hands does eat UPF, mainly because he/she cannot prepare fresh food and although has a lot of help, is limited by what products can be prepared. You even managed to twist that.

a@SquirrelGG ,not everything but the main supermarkets only sell a few items loose. Depending on where you live, there may be greengrocers who sell fruit and veg individually by weight.
The ones near me are either in the town centre or very close to the supermarket.

zingally · 22/08/2026 16:12

I love watching the grocery videos! I find it fascinating to see what different people chose to buy! Sometimes I get ideas for new things/meals to try, and sometimes I think "what the actual heck is going on?!"

Marroon · 21/08/2026 21:24

The joke is on you because chocolate is terrible for hypos and no it’s not “once in a while” is absolutely like buying coke or juice as an every day weekly shop item 🙄

You’ve missed the point in your defensiveness.
Buying sweets/sugar every week because you are Type 1 is not the issue. Buying and eating lots of junk food in addition to that is.
No one looking at 7 bags of sweets amongst a load of vegetables, meat/ fish /tofu is going to think - that person needs less junk. 7 bags of sweets amongst crisps, ready meals, processed meat products and little fresh stuff might be different

Wow who knew eating real food and being aware of alarm from medical professionals re ultra processed food was a MN thing.

Crack on. Your health, your choice. I do hope though that taxes on UP foods go up hugely to cover the impact on the NHS.

One of the reasons I am healthy is that I dont use the NHS. I have access to decent healthcare and if I fancy a treat, I have one. I certainly don't depend on a totally inept government and health system to instruct me. I don't drink, i am 8 stone and fit. Crisps are just crisps, not smack.

Jerrybalanitis · 22/08/2026 16:58

Redty10 · 22/08/2026 08:10

But this post isn’t just about you! Good for you if you restrict the amount of UPF but many families don’t and we are now seeing vastly overweight and unhealthy children. Type 2 diabetes which when I started working in General Practice in the early 90s was seen as a disease of the elderly but is now not uncommon in teenagers! We are also seeing a nation living with poor health from a much younger age so people may well live into their 80s but for many it is with chronic ill health for decades vastly reducing their quality of life and costing the NHS a small fortune in the process

Maybe its time ypu looked at why you have created a sub culture of brainless morons who are incapable of making basic decisions about food the rest of us do. And an education system that doesnt teach children how to cook or get jobs. Or a benefits system that means that 99% of people on a grotty high street carry a walking stick under their arm or drive an invalid scooter. Maybe the UK should fortify tattoo ink and pink hair dye with slow release vitamins and then their average 30 to 60 year old women would be able to lose 30 stone and get a job.

Ha! That reminds me of my mum telling me that when she came out of her coma and was told she was diabetic (type 1 - not diet related!) at aged 17 the first thing she said to the doctor was ‘can I still eat crisps?’

Why I have created a sub culture….
didnt realise I was responsible tbh!
having spent the last 35 years trying to educate others regarding health promotion I refuse to accept that responsibility 🤣
i do believe that governments and the food industry have to accept a lot of the responsibility but agree that individuals need to primarily as it is affecting their bodies and those of their children

So many sanctimonious types here. I agree that eating nothing but UPFs is not good, but honestly, save me from those who think if one bad thing passes their lips they are DOOMED. Boring as.

Just off to have a shower and then I'm going to McDonalds for breakfast 😉

I don't think many of us 'sanctimonious types' think that ' if one bad thing passes their lips they are DOOMED. '
It's the amount of snacks in grocery baskets we're commenting on.

There are plenty of people who seem to eat very little that isn't UPF.
I wouldn't bother with McDonalds, you can get far better.

My comment wasn't aimed at you in particular. I stand by my comments, read through some of the posts of this thread - apparently we will all die early if so much as a morsel of "bad" food so much as touches our lips, and apparently they are all going to live forever they eat so healthily!

Too late - I enjoyed my McDonalds bacon and egg McMuffin very much, and given that my everyday breakfast is porridge and Greek yoghurt I feel no shame. Thanks for your concern, but your comment does in fact highlight exactly what I said. What is so terribly wrong with a small piece of bacon, an egg, slice of cheese, a muffin and a hash brown now and again?

Just can’t imagine making my kids use their pocket money if they want a bar of chocolate or packet of crisps.

But how often are they having that kind of thing?

My kids love snacks and so do I.

You sound boring and miserable in equal measures.

What, she's boring and miserable because she's not filling her kids full of UPFs?

Funny old world where watching people unpack shopping is entertainment.

Next up, paint drying.

😂

Toenailz · 23/08/2026 03:39

No, I can safely say with 100% honesty that I have never looked in anyone's trolley (I mean in an actual shop, in real life) and thought to myself 'well, that'll be why you're fat/poor/insert unfavorable self-induced quality here that allows me to feel superior, then'. Much less on Instagram.

I really couldn't give a fuck what other people consume, whether they'll die 10 years earlier with a horrible disease because of it, or whether actually, they'll reach their 90's having smoked every day for 70 of them and eating whatever they'll like, and surviving poverty (self-induced, of course).

And I certainly never look at a trolley of 'obsessively clean eaters' and wish that was my life, either, or admire it very much at all.

You may very well reach 98 and spend the last 20 years of your life pissing and shitting yourself, miserable, with various health issues that do come from age or genetics, or you may not. I hate to say it that old age is rarely a dignified experience regardless, at some point along the line. Crack on.

When death gets us is very unpredictable and there are many, many things that can go wrong with the human body irrespective of diet that would make me think having some crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks is worth the risk. Plenty of healthy people keel over, and young too. I'm not frightened of death.

Toenailz · 23/08/2026 03:51

Oh and before anyone else says it, no I am not afraid of serious illness either. Having lived the vast majority of my life since a teenager with a severe, debilitating illness (that no, is NOT cured OR managed by diet) and having suffered so badly I've cried in my bed wanting to it to end and that I can just 'go now' at various points in life. Actually, I quite enjoy a good chocolate bar, coke, and whatever else I fancy. If it brings me some enjoyment, amongst other non-diet related things in life, I'll do it. There aint much of that in this world for a lot of people.

I'm not getting out alive, and I'm not getting out without some suffering, and neither are most people.

(Waiting with amusement to be told by the clean diet freaks that have no idea what my illness is, that actually yes, it is improved by diet because all things are..). Nope.

@CandiedPrincess , I doubt that those who die of old age having never had a day's illness in their lives are thinking on their deathbed 'man, I wish I'd eaten more crisps'.

Those suffering from illness caused or exacerbated by eating too many UPFs are probably cursing their poor diets.
Such illnesses include asthma, anxiety and depression, cancers, cardiovascular disorders and heart disease.

I REALLY doubt that they are!

It’s truly shocking how much processed food the average Brit consumes and it’s reflected in the obesity epidemic and type 2 diabetes nightmare for the NHS. We are lining the pockets of Big Food Companies and destroying our own future health. It might be normal to buy loads of processed foods but it’s in no way good for health. Budget wise though it’s cheap whereas it ought to be heavily taxed. Government Fail.
Big Food and our government want to keep us all just about healthy enough to work whilst pumped up on long term expensive meds for blood pressure, diabetes etc. Big Food and Big Pharma
are the only winners here as the rich get so much richer.
Junk food is addictive, it’s chemically designed to manipulate us. As a nation we are papering over the problems of our lives by self soothing with junk food and alcohol. They are not the answer, they are part of the problem.

This. A hundred times over.

Can't believe there are so many people on here defending crap food and happily feeding it to their children.

I meant you can get a better breakfast than McDonalds. I'd go to the 'greasy spoon' up the road or the 'Spoon.

It sounds a lot like 'My uncle smoked 80 Woodbines a day and lived to be 89'.

But, you know, people do. Some people smoke until their 100 with no ill effects, some people die of lung cancer from just being around people smoked. No real way of knowing what you're going to get.

Someone I worked with lived an extremely healthy life, must have cycled at least 20 miles a day, at weekends more. Two weeks after he retired, the poor guy had a heart attack while out on a ride, and died.

The thing is nobody knows what it will be that sees out of this world and into the next but those who choose to eat nothing but whole and non-UPF foods can still have as many cardiac or cholesterol issues as those who enjoy a Maccies or a tube of cant-be-called-crisps Pringles.

I'm all for being healthy but I believe in moderation and balance - and enjoying my life at the same time - and YES, sometimes eating a fat burger and chips IS enjoyment for me.

I don't think it's up to anyone else to judge where other people get pleasure.

Nobody is saying don’t have treats( that said treats don’t need to be UP food). Today I had nitrate free bacon, eggs, sourdough, mushrooms and tomatoes for breakfast. Having roast chicken, blackberry, apple crumble and cream for tea with wine because it’s Sunday. I don’t eat like that the rest of the week but I’m still eating real food from ingredients with masses of fruit and veg.

People are saying when a trolley is full of expensive plastic wrapped snacks it is not real food. Forming almost your whole diet round UP foods is not healthy because it isn’t.
