Why on earth would people want to switch them off?? We’ve had them before for severe storms and escaped dangerous prisoners. They can target a local area as well as issuing a national alert.

Because we don't need them and it's just scaremongering drama for idiots.

I saw complete knobheads last week with a disposable bbq next to a sign that said no bbqs. Remember these alerts are for those people who think they’re entitled (like my neighbour who is using his hosepipe - he has no physical needs, he’s just a twat).

I agree. It's supposed to be for if we are in imminent, catastrophic danger - nuclear attack or similar. What next? Alerts that it might rain? Or to let us know Andy Burnham's latest policy idea?

It should only be used in an actual emergency. I heard it, saw 'wildfires' and assumed there was one about to engulf my village. I feel really angry about how it has been misused.

I got the alert on my phone, but it didn't make a noise. I only looked to see what you were all on about.

@JohnBullshit Exactly the same. Phone in kitchen on charge - didn't make a peep. Possibly being lined up for some sort of natural selection programme...

My adult daughter and son plus grandchildren received the alert. I only know as they phoned me to check if I had.
l am disabled and on every priority list. No alert. They thankfully live nearby.
I’m obviously expendable.

Give them a chance.

They’re rolling it out FROM 7pm.

Better hope you don't get any major problems in your area, then.I know people who were saved from getting caught in floods by use of the alarms.

It really made me jump! The issue I have with it is that I pressed ok to switch it off as it was so loud, then the message disappeared before I could actually read it. So I was realy non the wiser what it was for until I came on here.

I have no issue with the alerts, the wild fires round here have been really bad. Six firemen were taken to hospital in Stoke on Trent today due to tackling wild fires.

There's a BBQ festival going ahead near us tomorrow. 50-odd BBQ food trucks and specialist BBQs in a tinder dry park in the south east. Utterly insane.

We have a massive fire a few miles away and just been camping where there was the day after we left a fire near by. I don’t need an alert to know how to be responsible and those who do won’t listen anyway.

DD and I are in N. Wales so it came through in Welsh. Understandable but....its tourist season in a dual language nation so might have been a good idea to send it with both languages at the same time! Spent 5 mins with google translate before the English version came through!

We’re in Liverpool and mine was in Welsh too!

It doesn't really work like that, sparks can travel further than you think in the wind.

Total fire bans in West Aus are pretty normal, there are also online maps where you can check how close they are to you.

Everyone just uses those flat top grills instead.

You can't even legally drive off-road in a TFB incase of sparks.

I forget the fine for breeching a ban but it's enormous, about $20k. They don't fuck around with fires.

The fire service is actually under a lot of staring recently, especially near us where there are a lot of fires. A number of teenagers have been arrested for the Stourbridge fires.

It's easy to moan about this stuff, but if you haven't got better answers, then maybe just stop whining about it.

(Though possibly a non-auditory option would be valuable - you can tell it wasn't a parent who decided the alarm time!)
