Lindsay Clancy was let down

hds873banana · 14/08/2026 10:47

For those of you who may not know, Lindsay Clancy is an American mother who killed her three children (all under age 5) then tried to commit suicide by throwing herself out of a window, and is now wheelchair bound as a result. Her defence is she was in the throws of post natal psychosis.

You can watch the full trial on Court TV. The trial is ongoing now.

She was totally let down by the system, the doctors, maybe even her husband. I’ve never watched a full trial and been so appalled at what I am seeing and hearing. Kevin Reddington her lawyer needs an award.

It is interesting to me because I have a close relative who I’ve cared for for over a decade who is regularly in psychosis. The lack of understanding of psychosis generally is wild. I My relative can slip in and out of psychosis on a minute by minute basis some days.

I really hope Lindsay’s defence lawyer gets the best outcome for her even though her life is completely ruined whatever the outcome of the trial.

She murdered her 3 children, it should be just a case of deciding whether she spends the rest of her life in a secure hospital or in a jail. I don't really see what all the fuss is about. Stick her in a secure hospital and when/if the docs ever say she is better/healed/no longer mentally ill transfer her to jail.

The one thing that should not happen is that she be let free - because that will encourage every Tina, Debbie and Harriet to use the same defence.

Mate @Gloriia I am a Mental Health Professional and I have worked in forensic units. Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is vastly different to postpartum depression (PPD). Citing a link between homicide/infanticide and PPP (not PPD), doesn’t excuse what they’ve done or somehow justify their actions, it’s simply citing a risk. In the same way someone poses a homicide risk with schizoaffecrive disorder or another psychiatric condition.

PPD is a very serious psychiatric condition. I think Lindsay needed inpatient treatment. The fact she wasn’t sleeping was very concerning and has been known to worsen mental health, especially delusions.

Mate?

Lots of 'mental health professionals' seem to think they know it all.

The fact is she was not diagnosed as ppp and self diagnosis does not count. Thing is whatever illness anyone has they should still be held accountable when they kill children.

Anyway, until the whole thing starts again at least she's detained securely. For now.

I’m not claiming to know it all. However, she showed clear signs of PPP. It was clearly more than depression. It was manslaughter at best imo.

She's not the first to use it as a defence and she definitely won't be the last ☹️ it shouldn't be allowed to be a defence if your nuts enough to murder your kids I don't care what you say is wrong with you you go to jail

Is an 18 minute psychosis actually real? I have had a close relative with psychosis and it took months for him to be back to himself.

Some mental health professionals argue it needs to be one full day for diagnosis, others say it can last minutes to years, it just depends. The diagnostic criteria is also different depending on the type of psychosis.

Mental health issues can and do affect anyone true. I don't dispute that. Everyone seems to be on meds for mh nowadays.

The point is mental health issues <even hormonal post partum issues> should not be considered sufficient excuse for killing children. She knew what she was doing was wrong.

The two women I know of who had PPP had to be sectioned for months. They were very clearly a danger to themselves and others, including their babies. This is a severe, life-changing disorder and describing it as "a hormonal issue" is minimising the seriousness of it.

Waiting for someone to start an "Alan Hawe was let down" thread and see how long it stays up.

hds873banana · 05/09/2026 11:59

Interesting that many seemed really fixated on whether ‘she had a diagnosis’ of psychosis. Getting a diagnosis for many conditions linked to the brain can take many years. Because the conditions are so complex, change minute by minute, hour by hour, in many cases. A diagnosis is often not helpful anyway for the day to day. What is more helpful is to look at the individual as a whole person and how they are presenting and what their symptoms and behaviour are - seen and unseen. You could be in psychosis for many months and years, and no one would know. Like my own DM. Well I knew - I just didn’t know the name for it for the first few years and everyone gaslit me. And my DM was capable of presenting perfectly sane in front of experienced doctors and experts. Often - there has to be a huge, outwardly obvious crisis for other people to see it. And that can take time.

'A diagnosis is often not helpful anyway for the day to day'

What do you suggest then because otherwise all murderers will plea psychosis because well labels are 'not helpful' and it can change minute by minute?

Experts examined her behaviour, they testified that her presentation was atypical/fake. It lasted 18mins never seen before never to be seen after. That is not how psychosis works.

Again, sorry for what you endured with your parent but you keep trying to equate it to this atrocity.

People can have mental health issues, murder children and still be responsible. Google it. Loads of them sadly.

We disagree, that is what happens on chat forums. Try to debate politely though.

Obviously it's a really distressing case but talking to posters like this is really unpleasant.

MintChocCat · 05/09/2026 20:20

I don’t think all murderers will be able to plea psychosis. That’s why we have trained professionals who can diagnose presentations!

It seems this case has brought out the “black and white thinking” in a lot of people. We have diminished responsibility for a reason, and that’s what court is there to establish.

Gloriia · 05/09/2026 20:24

'That’s why we have trained professionals who can diagnose presentations!'

Yep and the trained professionals said a psychotic episode does not usually last 18 minutes only, never seen before or after and people do not usually take calls mid episode.

Chickadiddy · 05/09/2026 20:44

Maybe the husband was an out and out twat.
Maybe she was suffering severe psychosis.

But killing your own children is an abomination whatever the circumstances.
She is a monster.

And yet her highly paid professional defence lawyers with access to a lot more information than you, accept she did it.

Wonder why?

The improbability of that seemed to be key to the prosecution but LC was intubated and in no condition to be properly evaluated by a psychiatrist for several days afterwards. First responders said she could not talk. She would likely have received sedation whilst the was intubated which would also mask signs of psychiatric disturbance. I don't think it's possible to establish, with certainty, the length of her psychosis, if that's what happened.

Edited

Actually a psychotic episode can last from
a few hours to several months.

Do people not realise that she isn’t claiming to have not killed her children.

This court case is about whether she should be held criminally responsible for her actions, with lawyers arguing that Lindsay was suffering from PPP/extreme mental illness at the time.

Yes we do realise that. It was only the one poster who declared that she hadn't killed them but thanks for the reminder for those not up to speed with this atrocity.

Most of us agree yes she admitted to it but is trying to get off with a very unusual never seen before or since psychotic episode excuse/explanation call it what you will.

You can have mental health issues and still plan and kill children and be absolutely responsible. Google it, it has happened before. Most get found guilty and locked up so no idea why the jurors think Clancy is a special case.

Firefly1987 · Yesterday 20:51

Usually people are at pains to point out that mental health issues don't make someone more prone to violence and they are usually the victim. Yet here we have a woman who was not even diagnosed with PPP and people are jumping at the chance to blame a mental health condition for what she did.

My brother has schizophrenia and I can't imagine him getting an ounce of sympathy like this woman has if he hurt anyone. Is this all because she killed her own kids not other peoples so women don't feel threatened by her?
