Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

His way would be right up my alley. Something with meaning rather than show. They don’t sound like v nice people.

What a lovely, thoughtful, genuine proposal OP! He sounds wonderful.

Ditch the shit friends though…

Uricon2 · Yesterday 15:32

DH proposed at midnight on NYE and had memorised Matthew's famous speech (it was shown a few days early)

"Lady Mary Crawley, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?"

Yes, he memorised it so well he seemed to think he was getting engaged to LMC. It was hilarious😂

Dahliasrule · Yesterday 15:32

I think that is a very romantic proposal. Well done BF. Best wishes to both of you.

Gymnopedie · Yesterday 15:32

Let me guess - they live their lives for the 'gram. If it's not big and glamourous on SM it doesn't count.

Bestfootforward11 · Yesterday 15:31

Horrible and jealous people. I’d seriously reconsider whether it’s worth having them in your life if they cannot share the happy moments in your life without them trying to dull their shine.

Goditsmemargaret · Yesterday 15:28

They are jealous, petty, spiteful people.

Potatoespotaarrrrtos · Yesterday 15:27

Huge congratulations!

It wasn’t just a sweet proposal it was thoughtful and very real! I love it, what a wonderful story.

They’d be ex friends for me. This was a huge and wonderful moment for you and whatever their thoughts they should have kept it to themselves!

Purplevioletblu · Yesterday 15:27

That's so sweet and romantic, don't listen to your unkind friends! They should be congratulating you, not bringing it down. They sound immature.

godmum56 · Yesterday 15:26

why would it make you sad? deffo get new friends, ones who are not shallow dickheads

SwirlingAroundSleep · Yesterday 15:25

your friends don’t know what true love is if they think it’s a showy ceremony to propose rather than something personal and romantic like you had. My soon to be husband proposed at a gig, but to be honest we’d already booked the wedding (we own a house and have kids so just planned a wedding) so it was more of him giving me a ring (which I’d picked) than a real proposal. I love him to pieces and don’t need anything showy, nor do you and that’s all that counts.

Dandeliontea123 · Yesterday 15:23

Your friends are immature and shallow. With this kind of attitude they shouldn’t be invited to your wedding.
Congratulations to you both and I hope you have many years of happiness.

Kimmers4334 · Yesterday 15:23

Are you sure that these women are your friends? They sound materialistic and a bit bullying?? Are they quite young? I think the proposal is very sweet and very romantic. Definitely not thoughtless at all, marriage is about love not money!

crazymommaclub · Yesterday 15:23

If they’re your friends, who needs enemies! Your fiancé sounds lovely and thoughtful. Make sure you make them your bridesmaids and pick them something truly awful to wear!

OhThePotential · Yesterday 15:22

They’re not your friends. Congratulations on your engagement!

It was a beautiful proposal. I was proposed to on a wet hillside in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors, I was wearing a big black plastic raincoat and had a mouthful of corned beef and potato salad sandwich at the time.

That was 25 years ago. Its the marriage that matters. Forget your friends peevishness, the size of the ring, where he proposed… is he a good man who will have your back for the rest of your life? That’s all that matters.

tothemoonandback345 · Yesterday 15:22

Nasty, bitchy so called friends. Perhaps they are actually jealous green eyed monsters. I think your engagement proposal was so lovely especially as your partner remembered where he first told you he loved you.
He sounds a very thoughtful person.
Ditch those ‘friends’ and cross them off the wedding invite list for sure.
Congrats on your engagement.

Flot · Yesterday 15:21

I’ve been married 25 years and have two grown up DC. My DH proposed pissed in a club. These picture perfect or expensive proposals are for the gram. Idiotic.

ToadRage · Yesterday 15:21

At least he took you somewhere. My husband proposed in bed one afternoon after work, no ring, nothing special I was devastated, I said yes cos I wanted to marry him but all the things we'd done and places we'd been when he could have done and didn't. I should have known cos he used to mock people who did special proposal, his best mate did it at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Ignore your friends, he knew you didn't want a public proposal and he did it somewhere that is special to you as a couple. Congratulations!

Benjithedog · Yesterday 15:21

It’s sounds like a beautiful proposal with extra special meaning behind it. Your friends are simply jealous and I wouldn’t consider them friends at all if this is how they behave. Many congratulations on your engagement.

Uricon2 · Yesterday 15:20

It was a lovely, meaningful, classy proposal and your " friends" are either image obsessed Insta queens, jealous or both.

I would HATE any proposal that wasn't absolutely private in the moment. It's about you two.

Congratulations!

ValueofNothing · Yesterday 15:18

Your friends sound shallow and possibly envious of you. Don't continue to let them try to pull you down to their level.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Yesterday 15:18

Your friends sound horrible! The proposal sounds lovely and personal to you. Congratulations!

TheAmberKoala · Yesterday 15:15

Friends support each other.
If you and your fiance are happy thats all that matters. Congrats.

NovaF · Yesterday 15:15

I’m guessing noone is proposing to your friends, so their mean opinions are rather moot. You deserve kinder friends

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 15:15

They sound awful. We went to one of our favourite restaurants where we'd had our first Valentine's Day dinner together and DH proposed there.

Some younger colleagues were like "That was it??" with my proposal story. What more do you want, a song and dance routine?
