Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

Please don't invite these 'friends' to your wedding

Disasterclass · 08/08/2026 13:42

Sounds like your friends are either jealous or lost sight of how normal people behave. Both in terms of being happy for their friends and what romance really looks like.

Pearshapedpear · 08/08/2026 13:41

Sounds lovely OP…. But stop using ‘quite’ thoughtful and ‘quite’ sweet or you’re equally minimising your proposal

Mrcollinswave · 08/08/2026 13:41

Many congratulations OP! Your fiancé sounds lovely, he took your wishes of not wanting a big proposal into account, and remembered the exact spot he told you he loved you for the first time 🥹and the fact you were in your pyjamas makes it even better 😂 it will be a lovely story to tell any future children.
My own proposal wasn't very romantic ...it was in the car, on the way to go plane spotting 😂😂

Pumpkinmagic · 08/08/2026 13:41

Sounds absolutely perfect. They sound jealous perhaps? I don’t know why they’d bring down your special moment otherwise?

Waitingfordoggo · 08/08/2026 13:40

That sounds like a meaningful and romantic proposal, congratulations! 🥂 Your friends are either jealous or just arseholes.

I think anyone who says they want a performative "proposal" is vacuous and shallow. Ignore them and reconsider whether they're real friends to you.

I couldn’t have said it better.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/08/2026 13:40

Are either of them engaged or married? I am guessing not and this is the green eyed monster.

Wheelbarrowracer · 08/08/2026 13:39

I think it's sad that your friends appear to have become so swept up in the appearance of the proposal, rather than the meaning.

I did not have a romantic proposal. I'll admit, I did kind of think he'd do it in one of the many lovely outdoor places we visited, but in front of the telly worked just fine. As does the way his love, over 20+ years, manifests itself in acts if service- which suits me down to the ground!

Lugol · 08/08/2026 13:39

Congratulations OP. I was thinking while reading how beautiful your proposal was and actually extremely thoughtful. He remembered where you were when he first told you he loved you and took you there. That's actually really romantic. ❤️

Not everything needs to be a huge, fake, performative Instagram moment and life is so much better when it's not.

Sounds like some 'friends' are jealous and it's to your advantage that they revealed who they are now because now you don't need to spend money inviting them to your wedding, nor waste the rest of your life being their friend.

They've done you a favour really.

Enjoy your engagement and celebrate it with those who truly love you🥂

KojaksLollipop · 08/08/2026 13:38

My husband proposed erm, on the job, so to speak, lol. I held him to it!
Every time we see a proposal on the tv or hear of one I mumble “and there’s another better than mine” and we laugh. So here’s from me “another better than mine!” Go and hug your gorgeous and sweet man and have a lovely life together, ignore them!

Figgygal · 08/08/2026 13:38

Well I think that's lovely too
Your friends are bollocks

BerryTwister · 08/08/2026 13:37

Yours sounds like a proper heartfelt proposal, not an Instagram proposal.

excelledyourself · 08/08/2026 13:37

Congratulations, OP.

To me, that was a perfect proposal. He remembered where he first told you he loved you, didn’t care that you were chilling in pyjamas. I bet he just decided that day that he couldn’t wait any longer to ask you and went with it.

Your ‘friends’ aren’t really friends. They’re shallow, ungrateful, and cruel.

I certainly wouldn’t waste my money hosting them at the wedding, or any engagement party.

Savvysix1984 · 08/08/2026 13:35

Your friends sound very immature.

Selttan · 08/08/2026 13:34

I think that sounds like a lovely proposal but ultimately all that matters is that you are happy with it.

Your friends sound like mean girls.

Years ago a colleague of mine got proposed to the night before having to go on a work trip in their living room, her boyfriend had planned out a proposal, nice dinner out etc for after she got back but he got so excited and just ended up blurting it out. She loved it and we all thought it was cute. 25 years later they are still married.

MyDeftDuck · 08/08/2026 13:34

It sounds like you have got yourself a kind, thoughtful and lovely partner…….take no heed of what your spiteful friends say……love and commitment is not all about materialistic grand gestures, he knows you, he understands you and he evidently loves you! Many congratulations OP, wishing you well for the future 💐🍾

TheOnlyWayIsIlford · 08/08/2026 13:34

A genuinely loving proposal, rather than a performance.

How refreshing.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 08/08/2026 13:33

He's right. You are right. You're friends are unpleasant

If seeing that specific place is now 'your place' enjoy it!

Franklinlove · 08/08/2026 13:33

Have they literally never ever behaved link this before and you are shell shocked? As I would be if my best friends suddenly behaved like this!

Or… a pattern?

Glidinglikeaswan · 08/08/2026 13:33

I think that is very romantic - he remembered a very significant event in your relationship, he listened to your views on proposals. Proposals should be a surprise, not staged for Insta posts. What matters is what the two of you think and feel, not your "friends".

And it's also a lovely story to tell your children and grandchildren!

thepariscrimefiles · 08/08/2026 13:32

Honestly, real friends wouldn't say such unkind and mean-spirited things. Real friends would just say 'how lovely! and congratulations!

MaidOfSteel · 08/08/2026 13:32

What a thoughtful way to propose. Congratulations! 🥂

Your friends, however, are jealous. Jealousy always gets the upper hand, even in friendships as longstanding as yours. They need to apologise.

Please don’t let them bring you down. This is the happiest time for you and it sounds like you have a wonderful fiancé!

Delphiniumandlupins · 08/08/2026 13:32

99% of MN think your friends are jealous, mean, rude idiots. I suspect the 1% who didn't vote this way think you are unreasonable simply because you are giving them any headspace. I'm sorry these women are your friends and suggest you drop them and spend more time with kind, supportive people (like your lovely fiancé).

tokennamechange · 08/08/2026 13:31

are your friends married? what were their proposals like?

Sounds like they might be living too much in instagram and not the real world!
