Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

Congratulations. This would mean more to me than some fancy restaurant that held no sentiment particular to you. Ignore them. They are being unnecessarily mean. I'd question if they are actually friends. That's some people to cross off your Christmas card list.

Rfriendselectric · Yesterday 13:01

My favourite TV proposal was at a service station in the rain! Your friend’s are idiots! It’s all about the relationship not the insta images.

BeDandyDenimSloth · Yesterday 13:01

Congratulations that sounds perfect , they’ve just uninvited themselves fro the wedding I hope

UniDaysAcoming · Yesterday 13:00

Congratulations OP! Flowers
It sounds lovely - it's meaningful to you both and made you feel happy. He loves you and thinks you are special. The best recipe for a happy life together.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · Yesterday 13:00

I thought your proposal sounded perfect.

Lovely and heartfelt and just the two of you in a place that was special.

Your friends are dicks

Your fiance sounds like a great guy. Best of luck with the wedding.

Whoops75 · Yesterday 13:00

sounds like the perfect proposal to me.
Congrat

JSMill · Yesterday 13:00

Your friends are jealous.

CinnamonJellyBeans · Yesterday 12:59

Your friends are jealous. A proposal should be a special life-changing moment, without pomp or fanfare to ruin the sincerity.

That was a very profound moment for you and your partner. I would not have diminished it by sharing the details with others, especially your vacuous friends.

SeriousCandles · Yesterday 12:59

I love this story so much more than all the flashy engagements I see on social media.

Clarinet1 · Yesterday 12:59

I’m in the “it’s lovely” camp - congratulations!
And, personally, I think the fancier the proposal and wedding, the shorter the
marriage!

ScallopShelled · Yesterday 12:59

Why are you friends with these ghastly people?

TheyGrewUp · Yesterday 12:58

They sound like a pair of shallow bitches.

It was lovely. Congratulations.

ChaToilLeam · Yesterday 12:58

That's a lovely and sweet proposal.

Ditch the so-called friends, what a shallow pair of bitches.

PeterIsAlwaysBusy · Yesterday 12:58

Firstly congratulations on your engagement. I think what he did was really sweet.

My parents got engaged on a bus ride home from a night out. They were married 39 years and it only ended because my Mum died.

My own engagement was about as "romantic" I didn't want any public grand gesture thing, it didn't matter to me. What mattered was I knew he loved me and I loved him and we were very happy together.

Your friends are truly awful people. You are clearly happy with the engagement so why are they not supportive?

BlueMum16 · Yesterday 12:57

Congratulations.

It sounds a perfect proposal for you.

Your friends are just mean.

mysticbob · Yesterday 12:56

Your friends sound like utter cunts.

BumblebeesandPaperbags · Yesterday 12:56

Congratulations, your fiancé sounds absolutely lovely.

I’d start looking for some far less shallow friends though.

Even if it wasn’t what they would personally have chosen, what kind of person (let alone friend!) criticises someone else’s proposal!!!

getthroughonemoreday · Yesterday 12:56

Your friends aren't being good friends. It doesn't matter what a proposal is like, if you're happy with it. Some people these days have unrealistic expectations and require a proposal to be 'Insta-worthy'. It's like the people who are more excited about the wedding than the marriage—backwards thinking and shallowness.

I was like you and didn't want a big scene. We had a very low key proposal, but the important thing was that we were engaged. We've been together 25 years and plan to stay together until the end, while plenty of couples with more spectacular engagement stories (and big diamond rings) have split in a fraction of that time.

Try not to let your friends tarnish your joy. If they're real friends, I think I'd be honest and let them know they need to stop minimising and mocking something that means so much to you. If this is how they are in general, I'd be looking for replacement friends and relegating them to friendly acquaintances at best.

It was a beautiful proposal. Congratulations! Your friends are horrible.

This.

And remember their shitty words when you come to choose your bridesmaids!

Sausagessss · Yesterday 12:54

Congrats OP! It sounds like a beautiful, thoughtful proposal. Your mates sound like utter dicks, though.

YouBelongWithMe · Yesterday 12:54

What a pair of dicks!

Congratulations

chirrupybird · Yesterday 12:54

It was lovely and romantic. They think spending a lot of money is showing love, anyone can spend money remembering a special moment to propose shows deep love, your so called friends are too dim to understand that concept.

ImpossibleGermany · Yesterday 12:54

They are wrong. Your fiancé's way is far more romantic. Spontaneous, genuine and less performative.

With half this big showy proposals, in front of people (urrgh) in fancy locations with a photographer who just happened to be there to capture the whole thing are staged anyway and the bride has played a part in picking how/when/where.

They already agreed months ago that they'll marry and she's already picked her ring but she wants her 'surprise' instagram moment up the Eiffel Tower or whatever. Hmm

LoyalGoldMentor · Yesterday 12:54

Ahh, congratulations! It's sounds perfect. I think your friends are extremely shallow if they think it should be all big outpourings (usually for social media likes )!
Your fiancé sounds like he has taken time and effort and thought with your engagement.
