Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

Sounds perfect. Other than the superficial shallow friends who need cutting out of your life. Please take these comments as proof that you do not need to allow these idiots to overshadow what was an amazing proposal.

liletoy · Yesterday 13:16

Oh my god I fucking love that proposal! Your friends are the sad ones, jealous and bitter that you are in love with someone who loves you for you and you don’t need your nails done and dolled up to be proposed too.

congratulations! Get planning

Happyhettie · Yesterday 13:16

That is such a gorgeous idea! What a sweetie he is! Personal and private - a moment between yourselves and not performative. Sounds ideal to me!

Many congratulations to you both. 🥂

Your friends are horrible. Doesn’t sound like they are happy for you. Or are they jealous? I can’t imagine saying something unkind if someone told me how they’d been proposed to, even if it wasn’t how I would want it to be.

Bigcat25 · Yesterday 13:16

Your boyfriend sounds so lovely and sweet. Congratulations op! That's bewildering on your friends part, given how long you e known each other.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 13:16

Awful friends! And it sounds romantic and also, most importantly, respected your wishes about nothing showy. Kudos to you hubby to be!

Pay no attention to them. Just be happy and enjoy the moment, other people who are trying to drag you down can go do one. Congratulations :-)

Whosthetabbynow · Yesterday 13:16

Friends celebrate your happy moments not tear them down and take the piss. These aren’t ‘friends’. Congrats OP; I’d be over the moon with that proposal. Not everything has to be top show for the gram. Enjoy your authentic life xx

whatwouldlilacerullodo · Yesterday 13:15

It's a lovely proposal! Much better than a performative thing. Proposals are just a way to agree on marrying, and he did that in a sweet way.
Unfortunately, you need to find better friends.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · Yesterday 13:15

Do they have partners themselves could they be jealous and having a bad day and see your announcement as rubbing salt in their wounds. The last thing people want to hear about is romantic stories when they’ve just parted from someone or they’re experiencing unrequited love. However if that’s not the case they’re just arse holes

Xelda · Yesterday 13:15

Oh and many congratulations!

AnonyMumAuDHD · Yesterday 13:15

Frankly I’d be taking their names off the wedding invite list. It sounds like a sweet and meaningful proposal from a person who loves you and knows that a flashy gesture is not for you. Whereas I’m not sure your supposed BFs ‘know’ you at all. I’d be getting some new ones.

Xelda · Yesterday 13:14

He sounds lovely and thoughtful! For what it’s worth, DH proposed to me on the Northern Line 20 odd years ago and it was pretty much ‘shall we get married’ 😂 He’s not one for grand gestures but I have absolute trust and faith in him.

hahabahbag · Yesterday 13:14

they aren’t true friends. I think that sounds really personal and romantic, really cute too.

this whole insta story engagement thing only started with social media and most are frankly ridiculous.

Keep the fiance, he sounds lovely!

Ditch the 'friends' they honestly sound awful!

Congratulations on your engagement 🎊

You beat me to it.

Loulou4022 · Yesterday 13:13

That’s a wonderful proposal! And so thoughtful! Not everything needs to be Instagram perfect which I’m guessing is what your shallow friends are referring to!
My DH proposed on the beach we had our first date on. My nails weren’t perfect my hair needed a wash and I was in my oldest comfort dress but it meant the world to me as he’d put some thought into it being special which sounds the same as you darling fiancé has done!
Comgratulations and here’s to a long and happy marriage 🥂

Shopsrshut23 · Yesterday 13:13

Congratulations 🎉 What very odd friends you have.

PurpleDisco · Yesterday 13:13

@UpShitsCreek Congratulations, that is the perfect proposal. Thoughtful and personal and it actually means something… the place where your fiancé first said he loved you. What could be better than that? He’s a keeper as he considered your feelings about not wanting a big show in front of people with some elaborate proposal, cos that’s what it is at the end of the day… people do this for others not themselves which is all a bit shallow really when you think about it! There was a thread here recently from someone who was distressed that her proposal wasn’t videoed so she could have posted it on Instagram! Your ‘friends’ are simply jealous and nothing else, are they in relationships btw? Were you thinking of asking them to be bridesmaids?

BMW58 · Yesterday 13:12

Get better friends

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · Yesterday 13:12

What age are they? They sound like 'mean girls' from high school!

They'fe likely just jealous. How awful of them to try and take the shine off your happy news. Is this what they're usually like?

Congratulations to you both! The proposal sounds perfect (I also got proposed to in my pyjamas!)

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 13:11

Sounds totally romantic!
My DH planned on proposing on our trip to Rome but instead popped out a question of sorts two weeks before in his very boring flat while we were watching TV on his ugly rented sofa…no ring or anything just a ‘you will marry me won’t you’? While I do kinda wish he had waited til we were in beautiful Rome it was special to me nevertheless!
Your friends are mean.

Myblueclematis · Yesterday 13:11

I think it was a lovely proposal. Have to say those ones you see where it's all done in public I find really attention seeking and show offy.

Your friends are idiots and don't sound particularly nice.

Sam1000 · Yesterday 13:11

Your friends sound like bitches

SleepPerChanceToDream · Yesterday 13:10

They sound jealous and shallow.
That’s my dream proposal - my husband did it publicly and I was mortified. It’s a private moment between you both, not a performance for others or content for social media.

Glittertwins · Yesterday 13:10

He did it in a meaningful place and way for both of you. It was genuine and heartfelt , not some kind of tacky online performance. You “friends” sound bitter and jealous.

Linzloopy · Yesterday 13:10

Your "friends" are jealous. A proposal like the one you had is much more romantic than a carefully curated one designed to be boasted about on Instagram. You need new friends. And congratulations!

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 13:10

Congratulations on your engagement! What a beautiful way for your fiance to do it! He sounds a wonderful and thoughtful man ☺️.
