Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

They’re not your friends. Congratulations on your engagement!

It was a beautiful proposal. I was proposed to on a wet hillside in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors, I was wearing a big black plastic raincoat and had a mouthful of corned beef and potato salad sandwich at the time.

That was 25 years ago. Its the marriage that matters. Forget your friends peevishness, the size of the ring, where he proposed… is he a good man who will have your back for the rest of your life? That’s all that matters.

tothemoonandback345 · 08/08/2026 15:22

Nasty, bitchy so called friends. Perhaps they are actually jealous green eyed monsters. I think your engagement proposal was so lovely especially as your partner remembered where he first told you he loved you.
He sounds a very thoughtful person.
Ditch those ‘friends’ and cross them off the wedding invite list for sure.
Congrats on your engagement.

Flot · 08/08/2026 15:21

I’ve been married 25 years and have two grown up DC. My DH proposed pissed in a club. These picture perfect or expensive proposals are for the gram. Idiotic.

ToadRage · 08/08/2026 15:21

At least he took you somewhere. My husband proposed in bed one afternoon after work, no ring, nothing special I was devastated, I said yes cos I wanted to marry him but all the things we'd done and places we'd been when he could have done and didn't. I should have known cos he used to mock people who did special proposal, his best mate did it at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Ignore your friends, he knew you didn't want a public proposal and he did it somewhere that is special to you as a couple. Congratulations!

Benjithedog · 08/08/2026 15:21

It’s sounds like a beautiful proposal with extra special meaning behind it. Your friends are simply jealous and I wouldn’t consider them friends at all if this is how they behave. Many congratulations on your engagement.

Uricon2 · 08/08/2026 15:20

It was a lovely, meaningful, classy proposal and your " friends" are either image obsessed Insta queens, jealous or both.

I would HATE any proposal that wasn't absolutely private in the moment. It's about you two.

Congratulations!

ValueofNothing · 08/08/2026 15:18

Your friends sound shallow and possibly envious of you. Don't continue to let them try to pull you down to their level.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/08/2026 15:18

Your friends sound horrible! The proposal sounds lovely and personal to you. Congratulations!

TheAmberKoala · 08/08/2026 15:15

Friends support each other.
If you and your fiance are happy thats all that matters. Congrats.

NovaF · 08/08/2026 15:15

I’m guessing noone is proposing to your friends, so their mean opinions are rather moot. You deserve kinder friends

DeftGoldHedgehog · 08/08/2026 15:15

They sound awful. We went to one of our favourite restaurants where we'd had our first Valentine's Day dinner together and DH proposed there.

Some younger colleagues were like "That was it??" with my proposal story. What more do you want, a song and dance routine?

shuggles · 08/08/2026 15:11

@UpShitsCreek Time to change your friends.

CareBearClaire · 08/08/2026 15:09

It sounds like your ‘friends’ are money grabbing, materialistic and rude assh*les. That was a lovely, romantic proposal full of meaning for you both. Congratulations 🥰

hourspassed · 08/08/2026 15:05

Your friends are dicks.

Your DH (to be) sounds lovely. A beautiful intimate, romantic proposal that sounds like it was perfect for you. They are simply jealous!

SweetDreamsAreMadeOfFizz · 08/08/2026 14:56

I just wanted to add my voice to everyone else and say it's a lovely, thoughtful and meaningful way to propose to you.

Congratulations! ❤️

something2say · 08/08/2026 14:54

Yes huge congratulations from me too! I think what he did was thoughtful and special, and it has created one of your own private couple in jokes that they won't ever get.

May you have many more.

I hope your time being a bride to be and then a wife is wonderful and everything goes right for you.

Just be aware that you are embarking on a journey that people think they have the right to comment on, saying things that reflect where they are and what they think. They have nothing to do with you. You plan the day you want and tailor it to your selves where possible, and don't take what people say to heart. It is your life and your marriage and your journey and your time in the spotlight x

Ilovemyfam · 08/08/2026 14:52

It is so lovely for him to remember where he first said the three little words. I wish I could remember where we exchanged those words. I do remember my proposal. It was in the bath!!! Don’t tell my kids.

Thingcanonlygetbetter · 08/08/2026 14:50

Jesus Christ, as my Granny’s used to say “if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all”

Congratulations on your engagement, you have found a lovely sweet man. Now find yourself nicer friends.

Thatsalineallright · 08/08/2026 14:50

Are your friends single, OP? Or unhappily married? I can only assume they're acting out of spite and jealousy.

BillieWiper · 08/08/2026 14:47

Are your friends 9 years old?

'I'd be sick if I was proposed to in my pajamas' sounds like something a primary school child would say.

percypig84 · 08/08/2026 14:47

That sounds like a lovely proposal. Your friends are completely unreasonable.
I was also proposed to in my PJs, DH thought it would be lovely to slip the ring on my finger while I slept for me to wake up to while we were away on a hotel break, it did NOT work and I kept waking wondering why he was poking at my hands, I was absolutely delighted when he gave in and proposed, I couldn’t have cared less what either of us were wearing!
SIL on the other hand was raging at her other half’s proposal being in a local park (a lovely park, with meaning to them both) and told him to wait and propose somewhere more romantic 🙈

PinkHairbrushClub · 08/08/2026 14:44

Huge congratulations on what sounds like a lovely proposal from a man who listens to you and sounds like he understands what you would actually like.

Your friends can't be real, good, friends if they behaved like that.

MeridianB · 08/08/2026 14:44

jay55 · 08/08/2026 12:47

They’re not really friends are they, trying to bring you down at your happiest.

Congratulations! 🥂

Im so sorry these women you trusted are being so unpleasant. I’m also sorry to say they are not your friends. No one who loves you would be so unkind. Take a break from them both and don’t even think of getting them involved in your wedding. 🌸 The proposal sounds beautiful- focus on happy t8mes with your fiancé

Ophy83 · 08/08/2026 14:42

They're dicks.

Don't let them spoil what sounds like a lovely proposal

GlomOfNit · 08/08/2026 14:40

This absurd idea that a proposal has to be choreographed and set up and consciously 'romantic' - what could BE more romantic than going to that ordinary place that's special only to both of you, and it sounds like it was a genuine and happy surprise for you?

Your friends sound shallow and unimaginative and a bit unclassy, TBH.
