Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

So many of these posts should say “friends” not friends. I think it sounds lovely: mine was similarly low key, thank f.

People who want big displays and Insta pictures are doing it for the wrong reasons. It's very romantic that your fiancé remembered where he first. Said he loved you and took you back there to propose. He'd also listened to you saying you didn't like big or public proposals, so kudos to him. Sounds like a keeper OP. Can't say the same about your so called friends though.

This. In spades.
It was a lovely, thoughtful romantic proposal.
Wishing you all the best for a very long and happy marriage.

SquirrelGG · Yesterday 22:04

It was a beautiful proposal, and congratulations.

Your friends are horrible, and they would be ex-friends if this happened to me.

whatisheupto · Yesterday 21:52

He thought it through, he planned what to do, he bought a ring, he actually followed through and proposed. Not to mention remembering where he first said I love you. Also he listened to you and respected your preferences re not doing a showy proposal. You were on cloud 9 so he got it just right because he knows you and loves you.
That is 7 big fat boxes ticked.
Many, many men do not manage that.

Simonjt · Yesterday 21:20

Congratulations, thats lovely.

If you love some one it really doesn’t matter how they propose, my husband asked me when we were in bed (not sexual!), it was no more or less special than any other type of proposal.

I think anyone who says they want a performative "proposal" is vacuous and shallow. Ignore them and reconsider whether they're real friends to you.

Um this. They obviously don't understand anything about what marriage is about so you can safely dismiss their opinions.

I think it sounds incredibly sweet (but then my DH proposed by saying one day while lying in bed just as I was drifting off to sleep: "so should we get married then?" 😆)

ScaredButUnavoidable · Yesterday 20:53

That sounds like a perfect proposal to me.

My proposal happened on my living room floor, half way through quiz show, a few minutes after my husband got home from work, so the fact you got taken out for a drive is a treat in my eyes 🤣

It sounds romantic, special and thoughtful so tell your friends to fuck off.

Many congratulations!!!

It was a beautiful proposal. Congratulations! Your friends are horrible.

THIS. It’s romantic and meaningful for you and your fiancé. That’s enough. Not everyone wants a choreographed, set designed, Instagram friendly event. Your friends may prefer a Hollywood proposal, but that’s their taste, not yours. And there’s no guarantee that a movie perfect proposal or wedding ensures a lasting marriage.

WinterAconite · Yesterday 20:40

What your fiance did was romantic. It seems like he thought of it himself, whereas elaborate proposals are probably stuff people have looked up on the Internet.

Thatsnotmynameno · Yesterday 20:35

You had the sweetest and most sincere proposal ❤️ congratulations!!
Those are not your friends, don't invite them to your wedding.
They are not princesses and I feel sorry for any guy they hook up with as they will never be enough.
Enjoy your engagement'

southofscotland · Yesterday 20:30

It’s a damn good job your future husband knows you better than your ‘friends’. Bin them off and find people who actually care about you.

Silverfoxette · Yesterday 20:28

congratulations! 🥂 It sounds like you have a great man there, all the best for a wonderful life together

feel pity for your friends they are sick with jealousy

Ved · Yesterday 20:22

Obvious jealous bitches are obvious.

Congratulations @UpShitsCreek

Jackrussellmansion · Yesterday 20:17

Congratulations, that's a beautiful proposal from the heart, I expect your 'friends ' would want something more performative. At least you know there's 2 people not to invite to your beautiful wedding day.

Wokeuptired · Yesterday 20:17

Congratulations on your engagement.
Mine was very very romantic, me and DH were in bed chatting and he asked about my thoughts on marriage and more kids, I said been there done that, he then said so you wouldn't marry me then, I said well I suppose I would so he said well let's get married then.
We have been married 30 years we have had some tough times but we worked through them he really is my best friend, and I wish you a long and happy marriage.
Ignore your friends as it's not about a ring, clothes or a location is about wanting to spend the rest of your life worth that person and working together through the hard times no matter who caused them.

I was so excited to tell them, we’ve been friends since we were in primary school!

my boyfriend asked what they said when I came back, all excited, so I said they said it was really sweet. Because I didn’t want him to be sad.

he is incredibly happy about it, and keeps pointing out the road where it happened “that’s where I said I love you for the first time and asked you to be my wife” 😭

That’s sooooo lovely, OP.

(Your ‘friends’ are a pair of bitches.)

PeterRabbitsWhiskers · Yesterday 20:02

Sounds like he knows you a lot better than they do. Flashy proposals for the Gram may be some people's idea of romance. I am far more a fan of simple and heartfelt. Staged faux proposals are not going to get anyone through the challenges of a long term relationship. Honesty, integrity and a rock solid base are what you need.

Congratulations!

RaveToTheGrave1 · Yesterday 19:59

My husband proposed to me in our local village, next to the river, cos it was a pretty spot! Over dramatic is over played and not needed for everyone, I would have been mortified with a big deal in a restaurant or something!

Undertherainbow00 · Yesterday 19:58

An engagement is a celebration of your love and personally I think what your partner did was very romantic. Please ditch the mean girl friends, they sound utterly horrible. Congratulations on your engagement 💕

Congratulations! 🥂 I never got a proposal! My boyfriend said, do you want to get married? Shall I get you an engagement ring? He did and we got married a few years later.

Err….. that was a proposal, wasn’t it? One person proposes (suggests) to the other that the two get married, or asks the other if they are willing to get married. That’s what a proposal is.

Don't be sad, your proposal sounds absolutely lovely and romantic - and thoughtful. It was a genuine and private moment between you and your fiancé that you'll cherish forever. I think it sounds sweet that you were in your pyjamas, and there's something real about it because it was all unexpected.

Your friends sound like a bunch of Instagram bitches that want a staged, fake proposal to display on social media. The kinds you just scroll over when you see them because they're so obnoxious and fake.

Curleywoo · Yesterday 19:35

Congratulations.
Their remarks are so nasty
Absolutely NOT normal.

Do not involve them in your wedding in any way.
They do not wish you well.
I would be putting distance between you and them.
I would fill your mother in.
These are not people to ever share joy with again
They are not your friends.
Wishing you well.
