AIBU to refuse to cut short our holiday for childcare?

This is not our problem ???

We are on holiday currently with our 2 dc (2 and 4) (Disney Paris) due back home on Wednesday. Dh has 2 older dc from previous marriage (6 and 8).

He gave his ex money for holiday childcare which she ‘forgot’ to book the first week so I had to look after dc which was fine as dh had work. Next week her mum was going to have the dc but is now unwell. She is telling dh he needs to come home early to have the dc as she can’t take the time off.

She is constantly messaging and calling and we are considering just turning our phones off if she continues pestering us this way.

This seems to be a regular thing with her not arranging childcare and then expecting us to rescue the situation which we try to accomodate if we can but this is the first time we’ve said no.

Yet you were OK with the elder 2 going to Disney with their father and without the younger 2 last year? Wow.

And you're OK with the 2 elder ones going on holiday to Spain with their mum and her partner without the younger 2 - even though they're siblings? Wow again.

No I wasnt ok with that …. As previously said above if you read the posts. So “wow” back at ya.

Of course she did. She's the crazy ex.
My XP had crazy exes, then he had an extra crazy ex - me.

🤦‍♀️
Well she’s expecting them to go home from their holiday because she forgot to book childcare after he gave her money to book it, rather than her take a day off because of her own error on her time with the children she’s expecting everyone to accommodate her… so yeh she probably is a crazy ex

I think you are pissed off with your husband

I think you like to have holidays without your step children but he would prefer all 4

i believe you are telling him to turn off his phone but he’s refusing to

I think you're talking shit

FookFookFook · 08/08/2026 12:59

I can’t get past you going to Disney without the 6 and 8 year old! She’s unreasonable to expect you to go back now you are there but not half as unreasonable as you were to go without them regardless of if they went before. They are 6 and 8!

Yet you were OK with the elder 2 going to Disney with their father and without the younger 2 last year? Wow.

MeridianB · 08/08/2026 14:32

So your DH paid for childcare during her time with DC and she failed to book it, kept the money and now expects you to cut your holiday short and fly home to look after DC? She sounds totally deluded. Ignore, ignore, ignore.

Oh and ignore all the bleating about holidays and anything unrelated to your
OP.

My personal view is that your husband came as a package deal, which you knew about when you got together with him, whether that was whilst he was married or not. You shouldn’t be excluding them from any holiday whether they went last year or not. So I think both you and your DH are BU!

Does that mean she should've also stopped her husband from taking his older kids away without the kids they share? Or is it ok for dad to have a holiday with only his first two whilst OP is seen as the wicked stepmother for wanting a holiday with just her kids?

You could also question why some women with such young children have an affair with another man?….. like OPs DH ex did 🤷‍♀️

Of course she did. She's the crazy ex.
My XP had crazy exes, then he had an extra crazy ex - me.

Noshowlomo · 08/08/2026 14:26

The ex sounds bitter and a real pain in the ass.
I totally believe that she had affairs and the child had to be tested.
I had (had!) a best friend years ago that had loads of affairs. She stopped an affair when she got married, she got pregnant with her husband, picked up the affair whilst she was pregnant (and the man knew), and only stopped the affair as she bled after a rough sex session so she was scared. She had the first baby, second baby quite quick and picked up the affair again when her second baby was about 2. All the same man, but she also slept with others. It happens!
Also was raging when her husband moved on quite quickly even though he found out about numerous affairs. She would moan to me about who he was with, and I’d say well he’d still be with you if you hadn’t cheated on him!

Coconutter24 · 08/08/2026 14:26

Franklinlove · 08/08/2026 14:20

Nah, bet she didn’t

Why? Because a woman couldn’t possibly do that? We’ve been told their relationship ended because she cheated on him yet he’s still getting crap because he had a relationship after her?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/08/2026 14:26

And @MeganM3 why isn’t their mother stepping up then? She will have to sort it. She knows they are away. It was up to her to book child care, and she hasn’t. It’s not up to him to always step up. As the thread-she had an affair, she moved away, she doesn’t book things after asking money to pay for them… at some point you have to ask about motive.

hahabahbag · 08/08/2026 14:25

I’m guessing there’s more to this story - only 2 years between your oldest and your youngest dsd op? Seems off you don’t have them with you at Disney. 10 days a month is 1/3, enough to fit in a holiday. Your dp is “helping out” or “doing childcare” they are his dc and if his ex is that disordered he needs to consider having majority custody for the kids sake

tsmainsqueeze · 08/08/2026 14:23

Doteycat · 08/08/2026 12:41

You mean you do.
I cant beleive you are ok with being with a man who would let his kids in the lurch like this.
But im sure its different with you..

OP pay no attention to responses like these.
You don't owe an explanation to your family's dynamics .
Some people will always 'enjoy' sticking the knife in and making assumptions.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/08/2026 14:22

Did she give you the money back for the child care she didn’t book and you then stepped up and did?

MeganM3 · 08/08/2026 14:21

I don’t think your responsibility as a parent is paused just because you are on holiday. When you are a parent you need to be able to cope with emergency situations or changes of plan. So it isn’t ideal, be HE as their father may need to come home to ensure that HIS CHILDREN are minded.

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · 08/08/2026 13:53

I take my own children away separately sometimes because they are different ages and like different things. It's the same scenario here, the older ones went with their parent and got to do older things like rides etc, now the parent is taking the younger ones to enjoy the characters before they all go on holiday together.

I took my DDs to Disneyland and my DS's to Spain in the same year. Then we went on a caravan holiday all together. They all lived with me and no one had any issues with it.

The Mum is in the wrong here. I seriously doubt she'd cut her own holiday short because the OPs DH didn't sort childcare.

I also note you don't seem to have an issue with the OPs children not going with the DH last time, so why do you have an issue with him not taking his other DC this time?

Different ages?

I would understand if his older two were 16 and 18

but they’re not. They are 8 and 6!!!

Coconutter24 · 08/08/2026 14:20

Franklinlove · 08/08/2026 14:14

And why are women drawn to men who have two such incredibly young children also??

Daisymail · 08/08/2026 14:18

Switch off your phones and enjoy your holiday.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/08/2026 14:18

Your DH has got four kids with two different women and two of them are just two years apart. He has to expect a logistical nightmare when it comes to childcare during the summer holidays.

Yes it’s a bit much to leave the holiday but he needs to step-up when he gets back. You can’t have a two year with one woman, then get another woman pregnant and expect the summer holidays to be plain sailing. It’s going to be like this every summer.

Coconutter24 · 08/08/2026 14:18

ThreadGuardDog · 08/08/2026 14:11

This is MN. Step parents are universally hated no matter how reasonable they are. OP posted about her DH’s ex being awkward about childcare but got a slew of very predictable responses criticising the fact that they didn’t take all four kids on holiday. Some nice responses about OP being a ‘homewrecker’ thrown in for good measure.

A lot of MN like to just have a go at men for whatever reason they can, that I have noticed.

Franklinlove · 08/08/2026 14:17

ThreadGuardDog · 08/08/2026 14:06

I think you’re projecting. OP hasn’t indicated any of that.

But I would bet im right

And “projecting”? Let me guess… you pepper most of your posts with “triggering” and “narcissist?

Franklinlove · 08/08/2026 14:15

FookFookFook · 08/08/2026 14:08

I do actually! I think Disney is very specific holiday for children and if the kids are anywhere between say 3 and 14 (ish depending on the child) to take some and not all of your children is wrong.

The op claims that he prefers to have a few holidays JUST with his kids with the OP and not his other two.

Either he is a shit dad

or the OP is lying

ThreadGuardDog · 08/08/2026 14:14

DaringlyDizzy · 08/08/2026 14:09

I know? You are assuming I was referring to her having a newborn. I am referring to DH

Ahh you have edited the post. I just think he couldnt have been a very present Dad to a new baby and a supportive coparent if hes able to get someone pregnant before the baby is even 1

Edited

Yep, unfortunately I realised what you may have been getting at as I was typing out my initial response and hit send before I meant to !! My bad. I think my reply still stands though - his first thought being that his needs come first. I don’t necessarily think OP was a homewrecker, as one poster so charmingly put it, but the timelines between the children of the first and second relationships do seem very tight.

Franklinlove · 08/08/2026 14:14

DaringlyDizzy · 08/08/2026 14:06

Completely off topic but how does he have a 6 year old and then a 4 year old with you? How do men have time to date with a tiny baby?!?!?!

And why are women drawn to men who have two such incredibly young children also??

elfendom1 · 08/08/2026 14:12

KitsyWitsy · 08/08/2026 13:52

Other people's lives are wild. I can't even imagine dating someone who had a 15month old never mind conceiving a baby to them. Presumably then dating started much sooner.. How old was this tiny baby when they started dating?! Wasn't that a bit off putting?

I agree, that is very stupid behaviour.
