AIBU to refuse to cut short our holiday for childcare?

This is not our problem ???

We are on holiday currently with our 2 dc (2 and 4) (Disney Paris) due back home on Wednesday. Dh has 2 older dc from previous marriage (6 and 8).

He gave his ex money for holiday childcare which she ‘forgot’ to book the first week so I had to look after dc which was fine as dh had work. Next week her mum was going to have the dc but is now unwell. She is telling dh he needs to come home early to have the dc as she can’t take the time off.

She is constantly messaging and calling and we are considering just turning our phones off if she continues pestering us this way.

This seems to be a regular thing with her not arranging childcare and then expecting us to rescue the situation which we try to accomodate if we can but this is the first time we’ve said no.

Since when is 2 4 6 8 a really big age difference?

It is when you're 8 and you're pissed off with everthing arranged around the 2 and 4 year old!

I can’t get past you going to Disney without the 6 and 8 year old! She’s unreasonable to expect you to go back now you are there but not half as unreasonable as you were to go without them regardless of if they went before. They are 6 and 8!

Can you get past him not taking the younger ones last year when he took the 6 and 8 year old?

I can 100% understand why the OP and her husband don’t want four children of very different ages and stages at Disney. I think it’s unfair to berate her for this. It’s always going to be difficult getting a ‘perfect’ holiday in a blended family, there’s always going to be a compromise somewhere.

I think DH needs to just book something, though.

Wtf? I can totally understand the op not wanting this. I wouldn’t in her shoes.

But the DP?.. good grief no

I generally take statistically very rare over what the new partner has been told was the cause of the breakdown

Edited

And that’s you’re prerogative of course.

I think that if you assume that an awful lot of the replies are from shit stirring contrarians or illogical dimwits you have your answer.

Made me laugh out loud 😂

That’s still not a reason to suppose the same thing is happening here despite being told it’s not.

This is what I have difficulty with. Their mum can go on holiday with her partner and two bio kids without their two half siblings and that’s fine. But woe betide their dad doing what amounts to the same thing. Yes, we know mum isn’t related to the two younger kids but her children are. Why does it work for one and not the other ?

I’m guessing there’s more to this story - only 2 years between your oldest and your youngest dsd op? Seems off you don’t have them with you at Disney. 10 days a month is 1/3, enough to fit in a holiday. Your dp is “helping out” or “doing childcare” they are his dc and if his ex is that disordered he needs to consider having majority custody for the kids sake

There we are OP. Cut and dried. Your DH’s ex is making life difficult for you, so your best option is to cave to her demands. Got that ?!!

This is ridiculous. As long as all DC get similar opportunities there is no reason they all have to do everything together.

You missed the first phrase, “my personal view”. That might not be your personal view, but that’s how opinions work, shocker!

Because it's statistically very very rare, especially during the postpartum phase. It sounds more like a story a narcissist would make up about his "crazy ex" and obviously you can say that about anyone and immediately garner sympathy points.

Most women move out after being abused or emotionally manipulated. Every single real life case we've heard of with the mum moving away shortly after having a baby, even if she did have an affair or did other things, there was still abhorrent behaviour from the man involved.

That’s still not a reason to suppose the same thing is happening here despite being told it’s not.

Yet you were OK with the elder 2 going to Disney with their father and without the younger 2 last year? Wow.

And you're OK with the 2 elder ones going on holiday to Spain with their mum and her partner without the younger 2 - even though they're siblings? Wow again.

This is what I have difficulty with. Their mum can go on holiday with her partner and two bio kids without their two half siblings and that’s fine. What’s so hard to believe about a woman having an affair and leaving ?

1/ not relevant to my point
2/ I wasn't referring just to you. There are loads insane similar comments. I'm not married and our only kids are with each other.
3/ Good for them but what's it got to do with this thread? Perhaps they can afford to take 4 kids abroad more easily or are better with coping with 4 young kids all at once.

4/ Who says DH 'isn't happy' about taking all his kids at the same time? It could just be for practical reasons (see point 3).

In any case, none of this relevant to OP's query. You clearly just wanted to pass judgement on OP and her DH.

You are so right, it could be financial, so much better to choose between which kids to take than go on a cheaper holiday with them all. I mean nothing like the feeling kids get when they are told “not taking you on holiday this time because I want time at Disney with my new family only”. I personally think anyone who excludes the original children are arseholes, no matter how the marriage broke down. Also the original, cheating, wife could still see OP as a home wrecker if she believed she could win the husband back. Hence the trying to ruin their holiday. Though personally, I believe , if you’re cheated on, you shouldn’t go back. Before you jump to to more conclusions, as you seem to be good at, I am not from a broken family either. I also jumped to the conclusion that op was the other women due to the kids ages, for that I’m sorry to OP. It was that or the other conclusion, which was that the OP’s DH’s first marriage broke down so he found the next wife as soon as he could to look after his original children, so he didn’t have to do it alone! Adieu!

Not only did she cheat on him when her baby was under a year old, but also during lockdown...!

Yes this doesn't make sense on many levels. It would not have been physically possible for a post-partum mum to be dating and cheating during the lockdown?

Someone is clearly telling a lot of porkies, either your DH or you to the posters here.

Alittlefrustrated · 08/08/2026 14:45

If he normally has the children for that week, how is it her job to arrange the cc? Why didn't he do it?

The story doesn't add up.

If the DC weren't so close in age it might.

I have a feeling that OP was a homeowner and keen to start a family when she met her DH.

In no world would a decent man have a holiday with only two of his kid. Literally no man ever if he was actually living with all 4.

I literally know of several dads and mums who have done this for a variety of reasons.

🤷‍♀️

I don’t think your responsibility as a parent is paused just because you are on holiday. When you are a parent you need to be able to cope with emergency situations or changes of plan. So it isn’t ideal, be HE as their father may need to come home to ensure that HIS CHILDREN are minded.

But he gave his ex money to ensure that HIS CHILDREN were minded.

I guess I also just don't really believe he took his two kids to Disneyland on their own. It's not really congruent with his other behaviour.

Coconutter24 · 08/08/2026 14:36

Well she’s expecting them to go home from their holiday because she forgot to book childcare after he gave her money to book it, rather than her take a day off because of her own error on her time with the children she’s expecting everyone to accommodate her… so yeh she probably is a crazy ex

People are SO weird. She doesn’t have to take all 4 kids if she doesn’t want to and she shouldn’t have to bloody defend herself. Maybe they can’t afford to bring another 2 kids along. They went last year anyway! Some posters need to get off their high horses, it’s weird 😂

I agree. The vipers are out again, I see. Picking apart everything (they assume, read: makeup) about OP’s life when all she wanted to know was whether she was being unreasonable regarding wanting to switch their phones off and ignore the ex wife.

BudgetBuster · 08/08/2026 14:37

knottywig · 08/08/2026 12:45

My personal view is that your husband came as a package deal, which you knew about when you got together with him, whether that was whilst he was married or not. You shouldn’t be excluding them from any holiday whether they went last year or not. So I think both you and your DH are BU!

My husband and his son came as a package deal. My SS is 14, our kids together are 2 and under. DH & SS have gone on two European trips this year geared towards SS interests. We have done one UK and one Irish weekend trips with the younger kids in the last 12 months without SS because he'd absolutely hate having to cater towards the babies.

Whether biological or not... the age gap means this us the best scenario for us. Which also appears to be the same for the OP.
