to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

I mean she'll be the architect of her own misery on that front. She knew the OP had a holiday coming up, where did she think the dog would go?

It was that she was going to kennel the dog and expect reimbursement, as she was unwilling or incapable of making her own arrangements. Pretty simple.

Who was? I'm confused.

It was suggested that she take the dog to a kennel, text her neighbour, and later give the neighbour a receipt from the kennel for reimbursement.

WearyAuldWumman · Yesterday 21:31

Since the vet recognizes the dog, wouldn't it be easier if OP said who the owner is? Then the vet could check their files to confirm. It seems much simpler that way.

Edited

The chip check is a legal requirement in Scotland at least.

Monkeypuppy · Yesterday 21:32

2O26 · Yesterday 21:12

But the vet does not know who the owner is. They recognize the dog, but will have to figure out who owns the dog.

They'll know when they scan his microchip. All dogs are meant to be microchipped by law, so they'll have the owner's details from that. If the owner has failed to get the dog microchipped for some reason then it's just another example of how she's failed her dog.

The owner has also been made aware that her dog has been left there so if she cares about him, she'll call them.

You handled it well.

Your neighbour is very out of order. She could have got a relative to help her if she wasn’t up to communicating with you/kennels.

As it stands she’ll likely pay a lot more for it staying at the vets than at kennels.

That makes sense. Otherwise owners would be dumping no-longer-wanted dogs at the vets and telling they belonged to someone in their contacts list.
It's well known in rescue that owners take fake strays to rehoming centres.
In this case, the vet can't take the OP's word for who owns the dog. Pretty obvious really.

I wish id picked up this post earlier.
I was in a similar situation years ago.
I went to my local animal charity, explained the situation, they were very sympathetic and agreed to look after the dog whilst I was on holiday. I was so grateful to them.

When I returned there was no charge! They are a charity not a boarding kennels. They said i could give a voluntary donation if I felt like it.

I honestly can't remember what happened regarding vaccinations. I would have paid to have had him vaccinated if they had asked me to.

The dog went in under my name and address. The owner was in hospital.

I think it was a bit shitty to dump the dog on the vet. What is the vet supposed to do about it? He is neither a charity or a boarding kennels.
It was very shitty to pretend that you didn't know who the dog was.

The dog will probably end up with the dog warden and may be pts. Personally, I couldn't live with myself if that happened. I know 60% of mumsnet would think that would be an acceptable outcome.
I would be heartbroken if my dog was pts whilst I was arranging my mother's funeral.

Whatever, i forecast an almighty row when the neighbour returns from Scotland.

What's shitty is the neighbour ignoring all attempts from her good hearted neighbour who took the dog in in the first place. Grieving or not she's a CF taking advantage.

Well she presumably won’t be that heartbroken if she’s not bothered her arse to look after her pet, which is, let’s remember, her responsibility, and not OP’s. If she wants to ensure that doesn’t happen, she can drag her sorry cheeky arse back home and get the dog back from the vets.

Kennels are usually all booked up at this time of year anyway.
Your neighbour has obviously had a huge shock and is probably feeling an overwhelming amount of grief.but this does not excuse the fact that she has dumped her dog on you knowing full well you were due to go on holiday.
I think the only thing you can do is call the rspca as soon as possible.
I hope you get to go on holiday OP.

Good for you. Enjoy your holiday. Grief or not, your neighbour is an absolute cheeky fucker.

Good for you op!

VivIsBlonde · Yesterday 22:21

Do you think she’s having you on?
Has her mum really passed or does she just fancy a few days away and didn’t want to pay for the dog to get properly care?

alondonerabroad · Yesterday 22:46

CantGetBackToSleep · Yesterday 12:16

The dog is at the vet and they said they would scan and contact his owner if he has a chip. One of the receptionists recognised him so they know the owner is a customer. I’ve blocked my neighbours number so she can’t contact me to complain. Thanks for all the advice.

Unblock her and update us on what, if anything she says! Honestly the CFery of this beggars belief I would love to hear her justification. I can understand her being panicked and grateful to you for stepping up with the dog but to then blank your messages and calls and have a relative send that message I’d be really pissed off but I would also love to know what audacity she would come up with as to why.

im also just a nosy cow lol.

wishing you a lovely relaxing holiday.

Apricotdog · Yesterday 22:50

Dropping the dog to the vet without giving owners details, pretending not to know who the dogs owner is, is awful, the OP knows the owner, they are not a stranger, surely the right to have done explain the situation, give contact details of owner to get, not pretend to not know the dog.

The OP said that the kennels wanted a part payment/initial payment, I would have paid it just to get the dog to a safe place, then the owner would have to pay the balance on collection.

Dumping the dog at the vets and not passing the owners details is what I had issue with. This isn’t a stranger, this is a neighbour.

murasaki · Yesterday 22:52

It's also a cheeky fucker and the Op did the right thing, the dog is safe. Why should she pay a penny?

lifeisgoodrightnow · Yesterday 22:52

I don’t get why the neighbour didn’t take her dog with her ? It’s still in uk and if staying with family then the dog should have been welcome and if staying in a hotel dog friendly options are available. 🤷‍♀️

I think you did the right thing op.

echt · Yesterday 22:55

A neighbour who doesn't return calls and has no care for the dog at all.

thereisnomeaning · Yesterday 23:30

You did the right thing, OP. Grief doesn't stop you doing the things you need to do. If you can organise a funeral, you can organise care for your dog too. My parents are overseas and I wouldn't be leaving until my dogs were properly sorted out, if I needed to go unexpectedly.

Your neighbour has abandoned her dog. The vet will make sure it is taken care of.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 23:31

I am reading this very differently to you lot, I think she told the vet who the dog and its owner are. Why would the vet take responsibility for some random dog otherwise? This is OPs last post……

The dog is at the vet and they said they would scan and contact his owner if he has a chip

They have to scan the dog. They can’t take OPs word for it. They have to do the chip scan themselves and see what comes up on their computer. If nothing comes up then they treat the dog like a stray as that is what it is legally.

One of the receptionists recognised him so they know the owner is a customer

So the story OP is giving them matches up so far, they recognise the dog.

I’ve blocked my neighbours number so she can’t contact me to complain

The neighbour has no need to contact OP. The neighbour has been told where the dog is. She was told this morning as well as at lunchtime. She knew the arrangement of Op looking after the dog was only good until Friday.

@CantGetBackToSleep have a lovely holiday!

OP never said she didn't give details of its owners and pretended to not know who the dog is. They will have to scan the dog because they can't just take OP's word for it.

OP didn't want to pay for kennels which is fair enough. It's also possible that the dog wouldn't get in without full vaccination history anyway.

This is hilarious, 9 pages ago the OP said its sorted dogs at vet neighbour blocked...surley thats the end of story, why are people still posting l doubt she will be reading this on her holiday...

But the vet has the owner’s details, what does it matter whether it’s OP or their own records that provided them?

By scanning the chip that a responsible dog owner has! Then they will attempt to contact the dog owner who has had a message that the dog is at the vets. Surely someone who is supporting the dog owner, through this time,; will be able to support them and organise something. Even at a push kennels. We are a "dog family" so it would be sorted. It's irresponsible to expect a neighbour to continually be looking after your dog even in this sad occurrence. If you love your dog then you have someone who can do this. I don't get it.

Yep. And a neighbour who now knows that her dog is at her vets - she literally just has to pick up the phone (so hardly 'dumped')

The vet does not have the owners details. They know the dog, but they have to to see if the dog has a microchip so they can determine who the dog owner is.
