To think that Cambridge University’s reputation has been shot to pieces by the revelations about ex-professor Jason Arday?

I just saw what that other guy said about him. Why didn't he call the police on him then? Or did he?

I don't know if he called the police on him, maybe he did.

But as this is a person making vocal accusations against Arday, it would be a brave person to say 'actually I agree, Arday's work is dodgy'. Because then it looks like you are taking sides with someone who is clearly unacceptable and targeting him because they're racist, especially bearing in mind that Arday's previous uni had cleared him of plagiarism. So Nathan Cofnas's involvement really muddied the waters because there was a racist smear campaign against him. Unfortunately, while the motivations were racist, the allegations were correct.

Cambridge clears academic in race row, citing new free speech protections - Committee For Academic Freedom

Cambridge University has thrown out dozens of complaints against an academic philosopher accused of racism, ruling that his views on “hereditarianism” and what he called the “DEI devil” were protected under its new freedom of speech policy. The decisio...

Hmmmm I think this guy did it deliberately... plenty of black people experience this and wouldn't report someone to the police for it even if they thought it.

I think there is enough evidence that this person has built his personal persona on "being black" and has used that to shut down any justified critque of him.

You might well be right but I'm mindful that a lack of holistic response/rebuttal from either Cambridge or Jason himself has left a vacuum which allows this discourse to grow unchecked.

It is unlikely that every claim is without foundation - I certainly hope his story hasn't been completely fabricated, but while there continues to be a failure to accurately clarify the points raised, the result is one of total reputational collapse.

The fact that journalists haven't been able to verify the claims is damning, but given that the person in question is autistic and that autistic people are at much higher risk of suicide, as are black men, I hope there are people looking out for Jason's wellbeing right now.

Social media, the tabloids and populism easily generate witch hunts and of their many failings in this case, Cambridge have massively failed in their duty of care.

To all those saying that if he were a white middle aged man, his embellishments and outright lies would be less of a news story, you're probably right.

However, unfortunately for any minority group of people pushing at glass ceilings - whether that's because you are a woman, person of colour, person with a disability or anything else - your success makes you a sort of 'trailblazer' and poster-boy/girl. You therefore - righty or wrongly - carry additional responsibility to represent your 'group' and prove the doubters (racists/agists/misogynists/ableists etc) wrong.

When you fuck up. You don't just fuck up on a personal level, you feed the people who wanted you to fail.

Institutions like Cambridge should KNOW that minority groups - or anyone 'shaking things up' - are going to attract additional scrutiny from the haters so they should be absolutely rigorous on steroids.

I feel sorry for the people of colour, people with learning disabilities, people with health issues, who saw this man and thought he was a beacon of hope. I also think every one of his students deserves a refund.

A white middle aged man with Arday's career track record would never have been appointed as a professor by Cambridge in the first place.

If any of the allegations are proven true once properly independently investigated then it's damaging but excuses will made on behalf those taken in by the tall stories/lies depending on whether confabulation is a factor here. Ethnic minorities are often the subject of disproportionate unfair complaints , so let's wait until a proper comprehensive investigation is carried out as to what has actually happened and why..
I suspect Cambridge will recover fully from it , state that lessons have been learned, and it will be old news within a year. It will be interesting to hear what students taught by him made of him in terms of educational benefits he may or may not have brought to his teaching and their learning.

I have no time for fantasists. I knew one at school in the 80s, and my daughter is friends with one at university now (unfortunately). They are often charming and convincing. But they can do much damage and have zero
loyalty. I cannot believe nobody checked this man out properly. What a failure of systems. Cambridge still has his bio up, astonishing.

What? He's lies are OUTRAEGOUS. And definitely not targeted due to racism. On the contrary, a student who complained about his non-existent supervision was accused of racism!
Is this a joke post to annoy people?

This is not victimless is it, if students work was jeapardised?

He himself is a tiny problem.

The underlying reasons he got as far as he did are a huge problem.

Edited

I agree.

It reminds me of The Salt Path scandal where disability is used to obtain money and fame.

No theyre fine

Jason, imo, took 'exaggerate on your cv' far too literally bless him.

Hes done right by resigning and ive no doubt he was targeted due to racism. That said, the response should've been to properly check the claims a lot sooner.

Good grief you've nailed the problem through your own foot there haven't you.

Fair play I think anyone who "identifies with..." anything in todays political climate is usually a pretty disingenous person.

I get it when it was the oppression of the poor by the elites the personal politics made sense. But today.. its so confusing because they are both as hateful as each other.

I used to assume that everyone was basically what I now understand to be a "high information voter".

But I've come to learn that many if not most people don't care about policy, they care about tribe.

LivelyGreyShark · Yesterday 12:06

On Radio4 yesterday they said he's recently been investigated and cleared of plagiarism by Liverpool Uni.

Seeingadistance · Yesterday 12:06

Part of the wider, deeper problem that this so clearly and comically reveals is that there are so many emperors strutting about with no clothes on. Anyone who comments on the lack of clothes is decried and derided as being "far right" and so more and more emperors have been stripping off for a credulous public.

Littlepog · Yesterday 12:07

Fascinating case.
I listened to a podcast he was on and was pretty incredulous afterwards. It just felt too fantastic a story. I remember talking about it afterwards and saying I bet something about this is shown to be untrue. He was unbelievable.

However, it’s a perfect storm. Someone who is happy to plagiarise, and embellish the truth. People willing to believe and champion someone because they want to be seen as progressive. Anyone questioning the tall tales, or academic achievements having the racism and/or disability card thrown at them.

Ultimately he’s and his supporters in their naivety have made things harder to young black autistic men to achieve academically. Hugely disappointing.

Jason's wellbeing? What about all the people whose heads he clambered over but should have had that job? What about all the students inadequately supervised by a liar instead of a properly accredited professor? The ramifications of this fantasist s appalling behavior a huge no we shouldn't be feeling sorry for him he should be in prison

I don't even think he's that clever, tbh. He really didn't have to try very hard. He was ushered into spaces into which he simply wouldn't have got through merit.

Absolutely, if you hear him speak it's mostly word salad nonsense.

And someone else of course, someone who didn't lie, plagiarise and scam didn't get a job as a Professor at Cambridge because he did.

hazelnutvanillalatte · Yesterday 12:08

IDasIX · Yesterday 09:23

No, not saying any or all of them are racist. I can’t know that. But it wasn’t his students complaining that led to the thesis and publications being scrutinised and this becoming a national news story. It was right-wingers who believe black people are less intelligent than white people targetting him. As I said, there was stuff to find and he’s bang to rights.

It is very well known that students consistently rate women and people of colour lower than men and white people in their student satisfaction surveys.

The scrutiny/media story is because an obviously unqualified person was promoted and supported due to racial identity/DEI instead of ability. That is the wider story and debate. And it's happening everywhere, so it ties in with a larger issue. At my old workplace they hired a 'DEI officer' and told us that 'inclusivity' would now be part of our annual assessments (ie choosing work from female/nonwhite employees), we would be compensated financially for hiring female/nonwhite employees, and other measures, and our company as a whole would also be ranked and awarded on these metrics. People are questioning whether that is right and what it leads to professionally and academically.

Totalmayhem · Yesterday 12:09

Have Cambridge damaged themselves? Absolutely. Students who complained about his teaching (or lack of it) were accused of being racist. That is beyond ridiculous- they deserve their fees back. It seems the venerable dons can’t even fact check - not really the hallmark of a top class university is it?!

Do you think death is an appropriate punishment then? He is not a murderer, or a rapist (and notably, we do not have the death penalty if he were). This is what I mean by a witch hunt, however justifiable the outrage we must keep a sense of proportion in our response.

A public storm which drives someone to suicide is not OK- remember Caroline Flack.

Perhaps because of a witch hunt, he might not be good at his job, I don't know, but he's been cleared of what he's been accused of.

As far as the PhD plagiarism goes, I'm surprised there is not more focus on Liverpool John Moores rather than Cambridge, as they awarded the PhD.

I wondered about all this and ask DH an academic - he said he'd seen a link with both phd thesis - main one he said to have plagerised - and run them though some software to look - it came back derivative - and that was with both actual thesiss side by side. He also said it was a very soft fluffy subject area which also didn't help.

He did say it would be reflecting badly on his supervisor(s)- and cast a cloud over their other Phd students - who hopefully have done enough in their careers not to be affected.

However he said there were other things he said that were obvious nonsense and thinks the idea Cambridge wanted a photogenic ethinic minority person with media interest attached made they overlook some obvious concerns may have some validity.

The BBc reporting I heard last night did leave the impression he was a black academic being targeted due to racism.

I do think academica does have an issue with diversity - with female retention as well but none of this helps that.

The report I saw on BBC News last night seemed relatively balanced to me - it opened with the background to Arday and this controversy, followed by interviews with those both in defence of Arday (Kehinde Andrews) but also those who think the case poses troubling questions for institutions such as Cambridge and the wider university sector in terms of academic integrity and DEI (Kathleen Stock). It also included a comment from someone at the National Centre for Social Research on why the story has become such a significant story in terms of culture wars and political divides. It concluded with the reporter commenting on how Jason Arday's case has opened up Cambridge and its vetting processes to scrutiny.

Totalmayhem · Yesterday 12:15

As You say LJM are also damaged…the fact they obv waved the original phd through is outrageous but I would say this is a result of Labour’s policy of making all the polytechnics into Universities without adequately qualified staff to oversee standards. Let’s face it - we all know a huge number of degrees are now completely worthless.
edited because I forgot an apostrophe- and I don’t even have a phd😂

He was cleared of plagiarising his PhD thesis, but since then it has come to light that he has claimed many accolades and positions (e.g. visiting professor at Ohio university, Masters at Birkbeck) which those institutions have said they have no record of.

Lifeomars · Yesterday 12:18

It's a very old university dating from the 13th century if i remember correctly so I think they will survive. I am sure that there have been other scandals over the many hundreds of years it has existed.

What? Oh, come on, he used racism as a weapon to silence those who called out his lies. How gullible are white, middle class liberals? When would they eventually twig that he'd been having them on? If he claimed he invented gravity or oxygen?
