Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Hydranga · 06/08/2026 13:44

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

It’s not you, they are unbelievably rude and ungrateful.

This. They are completely and utterly obnoxious.

I'd be telling them to fuck off home.

Breadcat24 · 06/08/2026 14:20

@Hydranga How rude. Are they expecting you to just buy different stuff? Why should you if you have meals planned?

TheVelvetCell · 06/08/2026 14:20

Normal behaviour, if holidaying together, would be to contribute food to the general supply, particularly if specific breakfast items are wanted, and to share in the cooking. All the more so if paying nothing for the accommodation! Are they just sitting there while you wait on them? I can't fathom this.

HoppityBun · 06/08/2026 14:20

I think YANBU but be careful because the fallout from this could go way beyond the end of the holiday

Goditsmemargaret · 06/08/2026 14:21

Ugh what a shower of rude ungrateful self-entitled twats.

Howyoudoings · 06/08/2026 14:21

You seem to eat very similar to me I think a lot of people are use to eating large portions. Sound like your sister has a bad diet. . She also sounds rude and I wouldn’t be cooking for them .

Gowlett · 06/08/2026 14:22

They want holiday treat food.
But, they have no money…

Moonnstarz · 06/08/2026 14:23

If they were expecting a completely free holiday then they need to accept what they are given. The breakfast choice wouldn't be mine either, and we would have cereal or toast. Spag bol later sounds fine, you also mention garlic bread, so sounds like a fine meal.
I think maybe there should have been more discussion beforehand about the holiday and any expectations e.g. telling them that you have already planned meals and that they are welcome to eat with you or do their own shop.

WineAndBridgerton3322 · 06/08/2026 14:25

Learn from this. Helping siblings financially doesn't work. Never do it again.

My mum is financially better off than her siblings and she's always tried to help. Money, holidays with us, expensive presents (TVs, AC unit, etc) and she has had nothing but a lifetime of drama and moaning from it. My mum feels guilty as they were very poor growing up and she managed to crawl out of it (trust me, we are not rich, just normal lower middle class) while the others didn't.

NoHotGirlsInHell · 06/08/2026 14:25

I don’t use this word mildly, but what a load of cunts.

Leopardprintbikini · 06/08/2026 14:26

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 14:14

So

Your taste in food sounds awful! So sorry. As a fellow junk food lover, I wouldnt want that and I wouldnt want a paella unless its done without any cuts or attempts to make it healthy

I cant stand mushrooms, and when i make a bolognese, its fatty, tasty and there is loads of pasta and garlic bread

For breakfast I would offer a fry up and some access to carbs. I would never offer granola

Sorry, being honest

BUT

There seems to be a backstory here

Have they lent you money before? Have they taken you away? They seem to dislike you 😡

Also, theyre being rude. They were invited on a free holiday, they should offer to fill up the fridge with stuff they like

Your bolognese sounds absolutely repulsive.

SunnyRedSnail · 06/08/2026 14:27

@Hydranga can I come and join you?? Your food sounds fab!

They are being rude!

TheVelvetCell · 06/08/2026 14:27

We do 75g pasta as long as there is a substantial sauce which bolognese would count as, and there was also garlic bread.

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 14:28

Leopardprintbikini · 06/08/2026 14:26

Your bolognese sounds absolutely repulsive.

How?!

Mushroom and veggies in a bolognese for guests!

I understand if its a quick weeknight dinner for the kids

Whats yours then?

Colourfulfairylights · 06/08/2026 14:30

Bloody hell what cheeky fuckers. Are they expecting to be catered for all week? Fair enough if they want more exciting options but what's stopping them going out and buying other breakfast options etc

If you're in self catering, I'd fully expect them to offer to cook evening meals at least 1-2 times in the week if they've not contributed to your food. I don't buy the not having money for food, they must eat at home. If they're as skint as they say they are, they'd be grateful for the free meals so clearly not that skint they can't afford to offer to sort dinner a couple of nights, and then it's your turn to criticise their cooking.

I can't believe your family are not only taking advantage of your hospitality but criticising you too. Ungrateful fuckers

dairydebris · 06/08/2026 14:30

You sound great, I'd absolutely love someone to cook for me like this. Theyre awful and really ungrateful. I wouldnt cook for them anymore.

Everyone in my house eats much closer to 150g of pasta per meal though. But thats not the main point.

Justchillinhere · 06/08/2026 14:32

Sounds like your DS has told her family it's a free holiday, any grown up would be grateful for holiday accommodation if they were strapped for cash, and would know to buy food etc, but sounds like they think everything's free, did you also take them in your car, free travel! How did you end up being cook and waitress to such ungrateful freeloaders? Discussions should have been made about food before you left or when you got there but that doesn't excuse their disgusting attitude. You're being very nice, I'd have bounced them out the door, at the first sign of CF

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 06/08/2026 14:32

The quantity of mince and pasta was a bit mean for 7 people - 4 of whom are adults I can see why you padded it out with bacon and veg but isn't bacon unusual in spag bol ?

Anyway that apart, they are on a free holiday did they think / believe / expect you were feeding them 3 meals a day as well ?!!!

Greedy ! How would they have fed themselves if they were at home ?

I hope they paid for the take away...

Pistachiocake · 06/08/2026 14:33

TisEye · 06/08/2026 14:17

I find it odd that there was no conversation around food before you got there. I'd assume either you'd agree to share a food delivery for your arrival ('is there anything you particularly want?') or you'd agree to both bring stuff from home?

When were SC I always bring a bag with the leftovers of milk, bread, vodka etc. from home. Did they bring nothing at all?!

The bolognaise was small portions for sure, but they have horrible manners & even the teen should know better than to be so dramatic and rude.

The teens are probably rude because of their parents-even the young kids, including those with additional needs in my extended family, have been taught how to be polite.
OP, I just can't understand why there are any votes for you being unreasonable! Yes, some say food should have been discussed and planned by everyone in advance, but surely you'd all know each other and stuff you tend to eat well enough that SIL should have been the one to talk to you, knowing you're doing them such a favour, if her family are going to be so fussy?
I appreciate your husband might have been trying to smooth things over, but he could speak up and change the food if he actually has a problem.

mamajong · 06/08/2026 14:33

Teenagers and kids can be fussy and rude - of they dont eat 'proper' food at home its hard to blame them for being fussy but BIL is an adult and sounds like a knob.

Playing devils advocate, regardless of who has paid / is paying surely in the spirit of a harmonious break you would have a conversation about likes and dislikes and plan meals accordingly.

Yes they have been rude so far and could have handled it better, but do you want to punish them at this point or have a nice holiday?

I dont think youre in the wrong but why not sit down with your sister and make a plan?

Delatron · 06/08/2026 14:38

Look, obviously they are being incredibly rude and there’s nothing wrong with your food.

However, you’re being too nice. At the first complaint I would have stopped making anything for them and told them to cater for themselves as they do at home. They are getting a free holiday! They don’t get a personal chef and all food thrown in too..

I would have had this discussion before the holiday though. Joint kitty for food - both go to supermarket together or do the order together and then split the cost. Either take it in turns to cook or cook separately.

And no your portions are not stingy-
most people massively overeat - especially pasta!

I’d probably tell them to go home to be honest. They are so far out of order.

Are you a healthy weight?

These are perfectly normal, healthy options. I find your comment really weird.

NewAgain26 · 06/08/2026 14:39

Your sisters family have been incredibly rude - and your husbands is't much better is he?!

To be honest - the oats fruit and nuts wouldn't have been my choice for a holiday breakfast and my teens possibly would of turned their noses up - but I would of offered to bring my families preferences with me and contributed by at the very least helping to fill the fridge with food!

Nothing wrong with the spag bol, would of been plenty for me and my lot especially with the garlic bread on the side - but I appreciate some families would of had a bigger appetite.

In your shoes I certainly wouldn't be offering to cook them a paella on the 2nd night - they can sort themselves out. if they went out and just bought sweet treats thats on them.

TheyGrewUp · 06/08/2026 14:39

They are unspeakably rude and stingy. They should have offered what they usually spend on food at home towards the holiday budget and shoukd have volunteerednto cook half the dinners and taken you all out as a thank you.

However, and I say this as someone who eats yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, the food does sound a bit stingy if it's just porridge or yoghurt and fruit; and 600g of mince for 7 is pushing it a bit.

As you are all on holiday, how about some croissant, eggs, bacon, good bread at breakfast. A bit more bolgnaise, nice barbecue with salads and pasta, etc?

But, they should have offered to contribute and you all should have discussed expectations in advance.

I've spent 35 years swerving two skint SILs and doing anything nice for either has always been a recipe for disaster. They're skint because they are lazy and ingrates to boot.

I find that post strange too! ‘Junk food’ lovers don’t get to dictate everyone has to eat as unhealthily as they do!
