Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

You sound very generous op but allowing them a free holiday.

They however are entitled cheeky fuckers

Shatenoeuf · Yesterday 15:39

The quantity of mince is very tight fir thar number of people on holiday.

I think people accept stretchimg it out a bit with veg or lentils (whether for health or financial reasons) at home but on holiday people expect richer "treat food", so plenty of food & not restricting less healthy choices.

Eg at home we'd eat weetabix porridge etc for breakfast but on holiday we'd get pastries, expensive sweet cereals, or things for fry ups eg sausages/eggs/bacon.

lulubalu · Yesterday 15:41

Sounds a bit of a nightmare all round. You and sister have different expectations, that much is clear.
More collaboration might be in order for dinners.
But I don't agree with you cooking and paying for your sister and her whole family, she's being a CF and thinks if she just keeps saying they can't afford it then it'll be up to you to fix it.
Her whole family sound entitled and ungrateful and I hope you make this the very last time you try to do something nice for her.
I'd be tempted to tell them to fuck off home if they don't like it, that may well destroy your sibling relationship but tbh she's destroying it anyways.

Shatenoeuf · Yesterday 15:42

75g of pasta is the recommended portion size and it’s what’s DH and I always have.

A lot of people would view this as a modest/sensible portion, what they'd have at home when being careful but not a no holds barred holiday.

Couldn't imagine being so ungrateful and greedy like some of yous on this thread.

Bonkers to love cooking!??

Bonkers to do so much cooking and baking on holiday, it's a break from normal life surely? Most people eat out, have treats, do something other than domestic drudge.

It’s not though is it, there is no obesity crisis because people eat a bit more on holiday. To think that is a gross misunderstanding of why we have an obesity crisis and it’s not holiday consumption.

If people are starving or claiming that the portion size was too small (as so many poster have) when it's a perfectly standard serving size, it suggests that their stomachs expect more food.

It's you who is misunderstanding. It's not having a croissant for breakfast or a few takeaways on holiday that's the issue, it's people's insistence here that the portion was too small. That's why theres an obesity crisis - people are simply eating too much and have lost sight on what a normal dinner looks like.

Leavesandthings · Yesterday 16:05

Well I just read the thread on a boring train journey and f me, that poster banging on and on and on about how OP should have splashed out to put on lavish spreads! And that vegetables are gross!
Ridiculously, insanely missing the point.

I hope you enjoy your hol OP and send the cheeky fuckers to the supermarket to buy their own food.

Quite.

This thread reminds me why I'll never post for advice / opinions on mumsnet.

"Heres the catch! What complete CF!!!

Kazzmarie12 · Yesterday 17:17

Is this post serious? Sorry but if it is wtf is going on with them selfish rude people? I'd tell them too go home and stop trying too ruin my holiday!

Nidnightbloom · Yesterday 17:20

You're family are being unreasonable and shouldn't of come on holiday if they can't afford to pay for their own food, tell them to go home and enjoy your trip on your own x

Autumnyears · Yesterday 17:44

Your sister, assume she's been married for a while and you didn't know how they would behave and their approach to food?
More fool you

liveforsummer · Yesterday 18:09

I cook 500g mince with loads of veggies and most of a pack of spaghetti for 3 of us and have a leftover for my lunch so it definitely doesn’t sound like enough. They aren’t contributing and obviously being very rude but if you’d invited them and said meals included then they do need enough to eat I guess. Maybe they’d not have come or brought lots from home if they knew they had to sort their own meals bit they couldn’t word things a whole lot nicer

Misty333 · Yesterday 18:39

Extremely rude of your sister and BIL tell them to buy and cook for themselves, husband could have stuck up for you to be honest and said they were lucky you were cooking as it’s your holiday as well or just said that was rude.

AllTheChicken · Yesterday 18:43

They are being rude making those comments, but as she was up front about that she couldnt contribute at all, I would assume that some thought for their tastes would come into it.

Also, they are on holiday and used to bigger portions, Im not sure why you're bringing anyone's weight into the conversation, just serve them up enough so they're satiated. If that takes less food for you, great, but they're obviously used to more.

Ultimately you've either offered to bring them because yoh care and want them to have a nice time, or you want to use it to feel better than them in some ways.

Again though, their comments were unnecessary and rude.

Bluedenimdoglover · Yesterday 18:51

Go on strike. Let them all sort themselves out. Tell your husband, your sister and brother-in-law that between them they can make their own food. Go out and have a nice meal of your choice. Sod them all!

Pessismistic · Yesterday 18:54

Maybe suggest sister and bil cook for your family it sounds like they have misunderstood free holiday to be waited on hand and foot on a holiday that you have paid for. Did you know they couldn’t contribute to food costs. If they use frozen food a lot maybe there use to cheap bland food. Either way rude and cf.

Katypp · Yesterday 18:59

Clearly the sister and her family (if this thread is even true) are massively rude and ungrateful.
But i am enjoying the posters falling over themselves to declare the OP's rather pedestrian menu as delicious and perfect and at the same time assuming you either think 75g of pasta is a massive portion OR you only eat beige processed food. Bonus points for the snobby comments (without knowing ANYTHING about the other family) around oven chips, chicken nuggets and - horror of horrors - WHITE bread.
I think the OP is secretly enjoying showing off her healthy cooking and basking in her children who eat porridge and yoghurt enthusiasticly. I know I would have done.
We are away atm in the UK and are having muesli, milk and fruit for breakfast as it's easy and means we can be away for the day quickly. We are also cooking every night.
I hate yoghurt and am not too keen on porridge when the weather is hot, but i don't think that makes me an UPF-guzzling monster - does it??

Surgz · Yesterday 19:01

Rude little shits..the lot of them! You are being generous and patient and the food sounds fine ( just probably too healthy for their junk beige preferences)

LisaD76 · Yesterday 19:06

They haven’t the money to go to the shop repeatedly? If they hadn’t purchased loads of junk they would have more money, also they would have had to buy food if they were home instead of enjoying a holiday you have gifted them. I think you are more than generous, if they don’t like it they can sod off!

ImagineImagine · Yesterday 19:12

What on earth made them think that when you invited them on your trip, that you were also going to provide every morsel for them to eat too? Bizarre! Tell your sister, she has to feed her own family, or go home.

MaddestGranny · Yesterday 19:12

They're rude. Your sister married an arse and they brought up two waste-of-space arsehole DC. Learn from this holiday and don't it again. Meanwhile, hopefully. they've noticed where the door is and, before they spoil the rest of your holiday, they'll use it to sod of home and leave you in peace.

Your mince would do 3 people. You have to understand that when hosting, you need to cater for giant portions or it appears “stingy” and “mean”. I’ve met plenty of women who think lunch is one “Ryvita” and that’s how they stay slim. They invite people around whose eyes are on stilts at how little food is prepared. It’s like WTF, are we in a prison camp?! Fine, but understand that growing teenagers literally stuff their faces. I’ve even met wafer thin men & women who pack enough food down for an entire rugby team, as they have very high metabolism, & are always down the gym.

The crunch point in your post though, if that they are not contributing to YOUR holiday. When I read that, they can FO, and all bets are off. Tell them if they don’t like it, they can FO. Next holiday, get cash up front or no invite.

As Elton John said to Prince Harry recently who went around his gaff asking for £10m to pay the Daily Mail in his failed lawsuit. Elton said “Am I an ATM?!! - FO!!” Door slam.

WiddlinDiddlin · Yesterday 19:13

Nah, they're used to stuffing themselves, they could have brought some food with them, I am sure that they have food in the house that wasn't frozen.. they chose not to do that and are being rude as fuck.

If they want larger portions than you normally serve they can contribute to the food budget, after all they will have all this weeks food sitting at home waiting for them when they return so they wouldn't be breaking their monthly budget!

I would point out you've offered to share your holiday accomodation and feed them, you have not offered to treat them to a private chef'd luxury AI holiday where they can choose from 100 different options at each meal and stuff themselves silly.
