AIBU to think people on MN should stop directly engaging with you once you’ve asked them to?

I find it utterly baffling that some people cannot accept that others may hold a different view on Mumsnet and similar platforms.
Of course it’s a discussion forum, and people are entitled to disagree, continue the wider conversation and express their own opinions. But once somebody has clearly said, “We have different views, I don’t wish to discuss this with you any further,” I think that boundary should be respected.

Some posters continue quoting and directly responding to the same person again and again, becoming increasingly argumentative or aggressive, even after being asked to stop. At that point, it no longer feels like a normal exchange of views; in some cases, it can begin to feel like someone is being deliberately hounded.

AIBU to think there should be a way to prevent another poster from repeatedly quoting or directly engaging with you... or at least a point at which they are expected to let it go? They could still continue the general discussion, just without persistently coming back to somebody who has made it clear they no longer wish to engage.

Quote "We’re not talking about people who hold a different view to you. We are talking about people who annoy you."

Annoy you by having a different view perhaps ?

I think it might destroy discourse if a block function was added. Consider a "Reform" thread as an example. It could split. One half blocking the other half, and it would end up with different challanges not being seen, nor replied to. And the other members of that "half" doing their own thing oblivious to what is going on around them.

Ok but what was the alternative? Another 40 page thread of reform voters arguing with left wing posters, and for what purpose?

it wasnt helping them avoid an “echo chamber” was it? It was either a bit of exhilarating fun, a mentally unhealthy way to spend their time and for some, upsetting and stressful.

What is? Disagreeing with someone?

No - derailing a thread by deliberately arguing endlessly with someone about something which isn't really about the actual thread.

I suppose there are those too.
I was thinking of my own experience with someone wanting an argument. Chatting along happily with others, just ignoring them caused them to have a massive tantrum. It was glorious.

I can't believe that anyone could be so overinvested in an anonymous forum that they would actually do that. Do people really care so much?

What does a massive online tantrum on a chat forum look like @Error404FucksNotFound ?

I've seen it quite a few times on forums but it's always been between people who have been interacting with each other for some time - weeks/months. Not a pretty sight but some find it entertaining (that when I first came across the popcorn meme!). Not pleasant to observe, I dislike seeing pile-ons. Often ends with what's known as 'rage quitting' where someone deactivates their account. They very often return again later though.

You should be able to block people if you want. I don't see it as a matter of cowardice, as a pp said, we're chatting shit online not storming the beaches at Normandy. It's just an internet forum and if blocking someone makes your experience more enjoyable then you should be able to do that!

No you don’t get a say. Just leave the conversation.

It would seem this thread has taught @ThatJadeLion just that. When you don’t get the responses you want…. Walk away.

Good on you @ThatJadeLion !!

No. They were trying to piece it together with other info I’d given.

They’d previously claimed to have worked in a school and their posts made it clear that they were lying - too much erroneous info about the school system.

They also claimed to be a woman. Again, patently untrue.

Oh dear…
