How early is too early to arrive at the airport?

Are you travelling South down the M5 from the Midlands direction? Always busy travelling that way on a Friday afternoon. I’m a super early arrivals person too and I’d always rather hang around at the airport and know I’m there, than hang around at home and risk being delayed.
Easyjet luggage drop won’t be open until three hours before the flight.

That’s loads of time. Too much. You don’t even need to arrive at 3:30 for a flight to France. I’d leave at 2:30.

I think 1200-1230 would be fine. I’ve not been to Bristol airport. But I imagine there will be somewhere to eat, so have your lunch there. If you’re anxious, then get there for the time that suits you, it’s only you who has to wait around, so it doesn’t matter what time you get there!

Far too early. You don't need to be there 3 hours before let alone 4 or more hours.

Bristol airport is quite big now, plenty of places to eat or shop. I’d aim to get there for the 15.30 suggestion.

That’s way way too much time but if it gives you peace of mind then go for it. There’s always stuff to do at airports even if it involves spending money.

Will I just be stuck at the airport, or grateful I’ve had the extra time? Try it and see. Then next time, you can adjust based on experience.

You sound like you're overthinking - you say you're anxious about travelling, but also sounding anxious about the steps you'd take to make yourself feel relaxed when travelling! Just please yourself. The worst that will happen if you have an hour too long to wait is you'll get a little bored.

Take a good book.

I'd rather kill an extra hour at an airport than worry about getting caught in a horrendous traffic jam.

You probably don't need to leave quite that early, but if it's going to make the trip less anxiety provoking then go ahead. Airports are easy places to kill time. Bring a book, and grab a coffee and the time will fly over.

What is the cost of leaving early? Boredom
What is the cost of leaving late? Missed flight and stress
Having said that I think leaving at 1300 would be more than enough time (as someone who is ultra cautious!)
Some people seem to think they are super cool cutting it fine and that works for them but you don’t get special points for being the last person who scrapes through security at the last minute. As long as you go prepared to have something to eat there and be bored it’s fine

If you get there before the bag drop opens then you’ll have to wait before you can get through to where most of the restaurants etc - some airports have very few facilities (even seats!) before you get through security.

I would leave plenty of time to travel (am a fellow worrier) but would find a pub or cafe that I could kill time at half an hour or so from the airport, then complete the journey to arrive once the bag drop is open. Or park up early and read a book in your car.

You know what? If I had any concerns about the traffic, I would leave early too. Maybe not quite that early, probably more like 12.30/1. But I would rather waste time at an airport than miss my flight. And I don't have travel anxiety.

What I would be, is prepared to leave earlier if I needed to, and keep an eye on traffic in case things were worse than expected.

Even if you end up 2 hours too early, it sounds you are losing less time that way than to being anxious from now to the arrival.

The way I see it is if you get there too early is no biggie you just hang about and chill with food/drinks however if you get there too late it’s stressful and you potentially miss your flight. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable

Given where the airport is and the fact you've mentioned the M5 on the last bank holiday weekend before Christmas, it's better to be early than late.

You could always check Google maps first thing to give you an estimate if the traffic.

I’m with you. I always arrive early. So where are you parking? If you are doing the silver zone you need to allow for the queues and the bus. Bus goes every 15 minutes and takes 10 minutes. Plus if you haven’t been recently the outside of the airport is all pedestrianised now, so you have to navigate the concourse. It’s super easy and all signposted. Everyone has to go through it. It’s a bridge over the road. No stress, makes it easier.

Easyjet bag drop is 3 hrs before, so arrive before that and you will be waiting. But there’s a cafe to wait in pre bag drop off.

Security does take a while so I usually get a fast track pass. There is a,ot of building work upstairs in the food section of departures. But it’s fine.

Can you travel on the A roads rather than the M5? Might be slower but won’t get closed? The M5 on a Friday is hideous.

perhaps use the m and s food between car drop off point and departures and sit on the seats outside there with some lunch (or eat a packed lunch at that location as the airport food is extortionate) if you’re early for bag drop, as inside departures will be busy and you could be stood around for a while.

You could always find a destination near to the airport for a stop off before actually getting to the airport. Like a shopping outlet or a restaurant. Get to that destination early so that you have completed the majority of the journey. Then travel the shorter distance to the airport when the timing is appropriate.

EasyJet don’t let you check in earlier than 2 hours whenever I’ve travelled with them. So you won’t be able to drop bags or go through security
