What happens with "trans" people at airports?

NorthEastNancy · 03/08/2026 02:04

I've just come home via Dalaman airport and was stopped and patted down / searched at all 3 check points (I clearly look guilty / dodgy)

Twice i had to wait until a female member of staff was available. What on earth happens with trans people? I wouldn't want to be patting down someone with a male body if my job was to stretch females.

I've been pondering this literally all the way home!

My passport states 'sex - F' for female so I'm assuming all passports do. I presume you have to go with the sex declared on your legal document. I would think on the other side of it, this job is inappropriate for a trans person whichever way they are because of the complications it causes

no, you can have F on your passport if you were born M.
You can apply to change your name and gender marker on your passport if you meet the evidential requirements

This is an interesting question. At what point does a person’s wish to be searched by somone presumed to be of the same sex , eg a transwoman asking for a female security officer, conflict with an employee’s right to not have to search someone of the opposite sex? So if transwoman is not allowed to ask to be searched by a female officer that does not seem unreasonable to me.
Speaking for myself as a woman, if my job required me to search women that’s fine but I would not be happy searching a male person however they presented, and nor would I (as a passenger, say) consent to be searched by any such female-presenting male. Some things really are sex specific.
And i have to say just a couple of weeks ago I was patted down quite thoroughly by a female security oficer on returning to the UK. I had no objection but she was very thorough indeed, patting firmly above, on, under, and between my breasts. I understand the necessity and it was ok — she was a woman.

You really need ai to respond to a mumsnet post?

Adult not child.

I personally find it pretty rude when people won't accept that my trans daughter is trans. I am asking no one to call her female and pretend she was born that way. Call her a trans person or a trans woman or even a trans identified male if you must.

You won't, of course.

Fine. That poster correctly sexed an adult male.

I don't use "transwoman" because I find it a deliberately confusing and unhelpful term. I usually use male because they are men.

It is very wrong to attempt to compel the speech of others, whether by direct appeal, or by using social ostracism and the other methods the trans rights activists use to enforce it.

It gains an entirely new level of wrongness when people are attempting to coerce females via gaslighting, social ostracism and the other methods the trans rights activists use to say that men can also be "women".

I wish no harm on anyone, I don't hate. I think people should be able to call themselves a name they are happy with and wear what clothes they are comfortable in.

Trans identified males can do those things without infringing on women's rights. They just need to stay away from the words we use to describe ourselves as a sex class, our single sex spaces, and our rights. Men can't be lesbians either so I'd like very much for the trans identifying males who do this to stop attempting to coerce young lesbians into sex with "lady dick" or brand them "sexual racists" or "sexual fascists".

I am not ok with compelled speech, homophobia, the erasure of women's rights, or the shattering of children's safeguarding.

It is not empathetic towards females, or at all clever to call male people girls or women.

At some airports there are female staff patting down men, women can request a woman but most men don’t seem to be bothered about opposite sex staff!

Well no, I don't believe people can transition between sexes - that wasn't really anything to do with my post though.

I'm not wringing my hands or going to anti trans rallies, I just silently believe there are 2 distinct sexes based on DNA.

It wasn't an anti trans thing at all. I was genuinely just wondering as it's not something I've thought a out before.

There really wasn't much else going on in my life - I was on a 4 hour flight. Lots of pondering time.

There aren't any "anti-trans" rallies.

There are pro-women's rights rallies.

There are arguably anti-women's rights and anti-lesbian rallies these days.

Most things trans rights a activists call "anti-trans" are really just pro-women's rights or pro-safeguarding for children.

Your son is very different from girls then as I don’t know any young girls who would be so unfazed by an adult man searching them.

Why would you think a lipsalve wasn't allowed? Confused

It definitely was not allowed in hand luggage at the time — it counted or was classified as a gel and gels were on the banned list for a while as they could be used in making explosives. I just happened to be flying at a time of heightened security measures following the shoe bomber incident where a terrorist attempted to put some explosive substances on or in his shoes, before he was arrested. After that the list of forbidden items expanded and included among other things, decks of playing cards.

Completely disagree, that’s not my experience at all!
I’m 57, always setting the blooming beepers off and have never once been searched by a male; nor have I ever seen any other woman being searched by a male in a UK airport. If it does happen it’s very rare.

As soon as as you set the thing off the female officer beckons you over!

ETA: don’t know about trans folk though… would hope both parties are OK with whoever does the search, as with any other passengers.

NorthEastNancy · 03/08/2026 19:53

I was just wondering generally @ScholesPanda
I've seen people kicking off about not being able to use the public bathrooms and changing rooms they want to use but not heard of anyone speaking about this

I don't know whether you're asking about Turkey in particular, or how trans people should be treated at airports in a more existential way.

If you mean Turkey specifically, my understanding is that people can undergo gender reassignment surgery, and having done so, can change the gender marker on their national identity card.

Whether that means they count as a woman for pat down purposes at the airport, I'm not sure.

BashfulClam · 03/08/2026 19:08

I got searched in Germany and I really think she should have bought me dinner first as it felt like groping more than patting down. She was really intense and seemed almost disappointed when I was ‘clean’. The guy at the machine opened all my lindt chocolates which pissed me off too.

ReturnofthePan · 03/08/2026 19:00

Ponoka7 · 03/08/2026 08:34

Really, in a Muslim country?
I have Trans friends. I don't know any who would choose Turkey for a holiday. Like in the days when HIV was a stigma, you'd choose holiday destinations based on how you are accepted. It's the same for many gay men, still. They can carry their original birth certificate, it depends where they are, appearance wise. It depends on if you've legally changed your name etc. You can inform your booking company under 'assistance/special circumstances' they'll handle passing on information. In a Muslim country you often have the same sex pat down. Guards at non Muslim airports have to do both sexes, anyway. So in other countries, they'll try to accommodate your wishes, but don't have to. It's less of an inconvenience to just get you through, so same gender, or private room.

No this is the U.K. Other counties have their own laws and practices.

Why have you put trans in inverted commas? Trans people are not imaginary. Also if you've literally been pondering this all the way home I'd say you must not have much else going on in your life.

in my home country it’s always a woman searching the women

AgnesMcDoo · 03/08/2026 12:29

The answer will depend entirely on the laws and culture of the country in which the airport is located.

I have never in any thread on the subject claimed or suggested that my trans daughter's experience or presentation is indistinguishable from my natal daughter's. Recognising the history and the difference and acknowledging it is the only route to a healthy future as a trans person imo.

The comment some way above mine about transpeople being men in dresses who are perverts enjoying being searched by women for their own gratification has been deleted, which makes my comment less understandable.

I am saying that not every trans woman is going to militantly demand to be searched by a woman. Many don't care who searches them and won't make a big deal of it. Mine would be pretty uncomfortable being searched by a woman, actually.

Your male child wearing jeans and a jumper was searched my a male member of staff?

Well, your experience is not universal - see my post above, my trans daughter (who is not yet on hormones and does not pass) was patted down by a male. She was in jeans and a sweatshirt at the time and somehow managed not to leer at any other person (male or female) as we moved through the airport.

What does any of this mean?

Why do you think a Berlin flight had a lot of transwomen?

Presumably because of the nightlife. It was always noticeable how many there were.

AprilMizzel · 03/08/2026 11:44

International travel and differing customs do raise questions.

I think trans passengers are concerned may have to do some research as countries practises will differ - though it may not bother some.

While I'd likely prefer a woman a professional man wouldn't really upset me but that's not the same for all women - some it would be a complete no for.

BillieWiper · 03/08/2026 11:26

I'm presuming they can request a member of a specific sex and as a goodwill gesture they will try to accommodate that.

Presuming their passport shows them as the opposite sex and a picture of them trying to pass as such. Else the document wouldn't identify them visually.

The staff are trained to search both sexes in a specific way, though often they will only need to search their own.

Snufkin88 · 03/08/2026 10:18

If it’s so unimportant then how come you have to wait around for a woman to search you if you are a woman .
