To just want it to be autumn now?

I hate the depths of winter (January and February) with a passion, but my god I am craving those lovely September days where it’s not so hot you feel sweaty by 8am, and you're able to walk around without feeling disgusting.

I want soups and stews and pies back on the menu instead of pasta and salads, I want a piping hot bowl of leek and potato soup with a crusty bit of bread, a steak and ale pie with a helping of buttery mash, a roast dinner.

I’m sick of wearing dresses and sandals, I have a Birkenstock tan line ffs. I want to get into bed and feel cosy, not just have a sheet over the top of me. I’m craving a cosy autumn afternoon, a nice walk through orange woods and coming back to a lovely bowl of stew with a helping of crusty bread, tucked under a blanket reading a book.

I’m just bloody sick of summer!

I think people who hate summer and wish it away are fat and/or have no friends.

Okay. When it’s 35 degrees out, eat a bowl of stew and hot bread and pretend it makes you feel good.

I don’t know why some of you are so offended by this thread!

You can have it in the evening or on cooler days than 35 degrees. Or if you have less appetite in the heat have a late Spanish dinner or something.

Another benefit of summer is that it’s bearable at work.
Come autumn and I have to start wearing thermal tights and cardigans at the very least. By November we are freezing.

We’re freezing in the winter too, to be fair. But I’d rather that than this, where our office has regularly been 30 degrees. I don’t think there’s been a week since May where at least one person hasn’t gone home sick with what appears to be heat related illnesses.

(And before that poster says it’s bullshit - it’s an NHS office. They don’t really care because they can’t afford to do anything. The advice has just been to take regular breaks outside and drink lots)

Have you missed the parched landscape? The wildfires killing plants and animals? Or thought that this weather has had a detrimental effect on crops which will push prices up and cause a shortage?

It's great that you think it's wonderful that it hasn't rained and it's been so hot but the bigger picture (outside of your garden) isn't quite so rosey!

I agree. And an earlier pp calling it “glorious “ as the wildfires and drought go on..

what the bulk of the U.K. has now is weather you can walk a dog and exercise in for most of the day.

Indeed.

And we don’t need to go back and forth on which ‘side’ is rewriting history, we can simply look up weather data over the last 2 months. It’s clear for all to see that the idea the South-West has been 26+ degrees celsius for the entirety of June and July is a complete fucking nonsense.

No, it’s fucking not.

But you must be right. Oh ye of great moral standing, because you’ve enjoyed the last two months. Everyone else is below you!

Why not? People in hot countries eat hot food.

I disagree completely.
I love sitting in my garden. Wearing summer clothes. Slipping out of the house completely hassle free. Slip on a pair of shoes and sunglasses and off I go.
I make sure I have lots of summer clothes, made from natural fibres and I wash often. Being able to line dry clothes and iron and put them straight away is a luxury.
Leaving the house wearing minimal make up is another.
Being unable to sit in my garden due to the rain or cold is awful.
Getting battered to death by wind and rain is not enjoyable to me. Neither is having to cart around heavy coats, jumpers, umbrellas etc all whilst getting soaked is horrible.
I don’t like Halloween. I hate randomers knocking on my door at the best of times, never mind constant knocking asking for treats.
I do like the colours of autumn but that’s about it.
Give me dry, hot/warm days anytime.

Long may summer continue! There’s months of cold, dark, wet misery on its way.

And energy prices going up!

cravingcrispmornings · 02/08/2026 21:33

I never said I can’t. It’s just not the weather for it is it? You don’t want a scalding bowl of stew and crusty bread in the middle of a heatwave!

Yes, it’s odd that the anti summer brigade seem so hooked up on rules. No soup or hot food? Have they been to India? Lentil soup, curry, and much hotter and more humid than here. Candles? Well, it’s 9.20 and my curtains are shut. If I wanted a candle I could light one. All the feeling guilty for not being out - why? Just stay in if you want to. There’s no law. I don’t go outside much more than I do in the winter - it’s just nicer.
A proper extended heatwave is different, and even I found the last one a bit much b the end of- but what the bulk of the U.K. has now is weather you can walk a dog and exercise in for most of the day.
Behaviour isn’t dictated by season unless you want it to be. I hate winter, it affects my mental health badly but I absolutely refuse to let it stop me from going to hobby groups or the gym or volunteering.

You are allowed to eat soup in August! Just make it if you want it. I'm already noticing the nights drawing in and I don't like it. The last couple of weeks since the heatwave broke have been lovely and I'd quite happily have it like this all year round.

I’m in north east Scotland, I’ve hardly worn shorts this summer and fed up of grey dull cool days. Someone upthread said it was 22 degrees, it’s about 12 here and I’ve gone to bed. I’m not sure I’m imagining it but I swear it’s duller this year than most. I’ve used my light cashmere jumper loads. Next week’s forecast looks dire though glad for rain. If my post reads miserable it’s because I feel a bit cheated this year!

Both sides of this rewrite history. The summer lovers claim we get 3 days of summer and months of grey. And Vice versa.

Today was 26 degrees where I was, which is too hot for me to walk dog during day and run. I waited until 5pm, but I’ve had to skip lots of runs as it hasn’t been below 25 even at 8pm.

Statistically it has been a hot dry summer, no one is making that up! Of course there might have been the odd day, but same in winter, not every day is miserable.

It has felt somewhat relentless. As to the person that said they don’t understand why you’d want to be cold, people are different. I feel unbearably hot over about 25 degrees. I can’t describe easily, how awful it makes me feel. But I don’t get overly cold and would always rather be too cold than too hot.

It depends. If it's hotter outside then the advice is to keep everything closed. I open the curtains windows at the back of the house on the morning. Then switch to the front loves open later on when the sun moves. If there a decent breeze I open them all.

Exactly this I only have the windows open early in the morning and late at night
During the day, it's hotter outside than it is inside. So you leave the windows shut, or you just let hot air in

MyPlumHelper · 02/08/2026 20:53

Normally I love summer. But summer isn't normally like this.

I live in the south East and it has been 2 months of unremitting heat approaching 30c most days and several days of 35c

Ive had enough. I can barely sleep.

BeachTimeIsBliss · 02/08/2026 20:39

Does thst not make the place hotter? We've had the front and back doors propped open and all the windows and it's much cooler indoors than outside.

I’m desperate for a real long downpour of rain . My garden is dying even the hedging . i am also desperate to walk my dogs again in normal hours . I
do love summer but the flies and drought I can do without . I also love autumn .

Where do you live where it's been too hot to walk your dogs today?

Mine have been out all day in West Sussex, sat round a fishing lake with shade as well as sun. But they had walks as well.

BeachTimeIsBliss · 02/08/2026 20:39

Traceysgoingtobelivid · 02/08/2026 15:15

My blinds and curtains feel they have been closed for months now to keep the heat out, it would be quite nice to actually see out of my windows!

BabblingBiddy · 02/08/2026 20:32

No thank you. We haven't even been on our summer holiday yet. And I don't do well in heat, but would still like the summer to stay until we've been away.

that’s the other advantage: no need to socialise!

There’s never need to socialise of you don’t want to. Summer just makes it easier, not compulsory.
