To just want it to be autumn now?

I hate the depths of winter (January and February) with a passion, but my god I am craving those lovely September days where it’s not so hot you feel sweaty by 8am, and you're able to walk around without feeling disgusting.

I want soups and stews and pies back on the menu instead of pasta and salads, I want a piping hot bowl of leek and potato soup with a crusty bit of bread, a steak and ale pie with a helping of buttery mash, a roast dinner.

I’m sick of wearing dresses and sandals, I have a Birkenstock tan line ffs. I want to get into bed and feel cosy, not just have a sheet over the top of me. I’m craving a cosy autumn afternoon, a nice walk through orange woods and coming back to a lovely bowl of stew with a helping of crusty bread, tucked under a blanket reading a book.

I’m just bloody sick of summer!

I love stew in this weather. Mainly because my kitchen is the hottest room in the house in the evenings, so no one wants to cook. So bunging stuff in the slow cooker and leaving it to do it's thing is perfect.

Okay. When it’s 35 degrees out, eat a bowl of stew and hot bread and pretend it makes you feel good.

I don’t know why some of you are so offended by this thread!

I have eaten stew at a lot warmer temperatures and it did make me feel good. I didn’t need to pretend.

I love summer weather. Last time I looked Cambridgeshire wasn’t in the north.

Well exactly. I was repeating a silly comment to demonstrate how silly it was.

I suspect most summer loving mumsnetters live in the northern half of the UK and they forget the weather isn't the same everywhere.

I suspect most summer hating mumsnetters live in the southern half of the UK and I think they forget that the weather isn't the same everywhere.

While we have had some hot weather in Yorkshire it hasn't been unremitting like it has been in the south east. What we really need is rain. Woodhead Pass has only just reopened after being closed for ages due to the wild fire at Tintwhistle and all the fields are parched

Our nights are much fresher and it is too cold to sleep without bed covers.

I’m in north east Scotland, I’ve hardly worn shorts this summer and fed up of grey dull cool days. Someone upthread said it was 22 degrees, it’s about 12 here and I’ve gone to bed. I’m not sure I’m imagining it but I swear it’s duller this year than most. I’ve used my light cashmere jumper loads. Next week’s forecast looks dire though glad for rain. If my post reads miserable it’s because I feel a bit cheated this year!

I love running in cold weather and in the dark 😂. I love the dark, verbally. I do like light evenings too. But I don’t mind dark evenings at all. Cold weather is great to run in, you just dress right and get out. The heat makes me feel sick of if I run in it.

I'm so annoyed about this. I started running in May last year and managed 3 times a week all summer. This summer I've had to do at least 2 out of 3 per week on a treadmill in an air-conditioned gym and it's just shit in comparison.

BIossomtoes · 02/08/2026 22:27

I don’t think there’s been a week since May where at least one person hasn’t gone home sick with what appears to be heat related illnesses.

It was a maximum of 17 degrees for the first two weeks in June according to Met Office records.

I think people who hate summer and wish it away are fat and/or have no friends.

I'm a size 10, have plenty of friends and hate summer. So there!

Leavesandthings · 02/08/2026 22:07

There's even a poll and everything.

cardibach · 02/08/2026 22:05

Uppity? And other people are insufferable?
Talking about whether you are unreasonable to want autumn or not isn’t derailing the thread. It’s what you asked.

cardibach · 02/08/2026 22:03

cravingcrispmornings · 02/08/2026 21:58

So go to the GP and seek help. Don’t be insufferable and goady on a thread that’s about how awful this summer has been - because it has been awful. You’re drawing false equivalences and pretending that Britain is the same as India because you don’t like to admit the reality of the absolute disaster this summer has been.

Im doing nothing of the kind. I’ve said the two heatwaves were unpleasant. I’ve said we need rain. I’ve done it all without insulting anyone, whereas you have said I ‘get a bit sad’, need to ‘learn to deal with it’ (how old do you think I am and how many years do you think I’ve been dealing with it?) and say I’m ’being insufferable’ because I’ve pointed out you can do all the things you like to do in summer while winter makes me ill. It’s a personal attack. I’m not reporting it because it might get deleted and people need to see how unpleasant you are being.

Leavesandthings · 02/08/2026 22:00

Why are you being so angry and horrible?

It's literally a thread about the hot summer. Some people like it, some people hate it.

Jesus Christ calm down and just don't read the thread if you can't help but get so irate.

Because the same two posters have derailed the thread and been incredibly uppity.

I think people who hate summer and wish it away are fat and/or have no friends.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this. When I was a young teenager I hated summer. We didn’t have a school uniform and I wore tight jeans evey single day. Because I was convinced I was fat due to going through puberty and the almost unbearable pressure at the time to be neigh on anorexic, I always wore a top/jumper which covered my hips plus a jacket. For this reason I hated summer. Looking back I was by any standards thin. Much, much thinner than the average teenager of today by a long way.
So I think there is a lot of truth in this statement.
How I wish I could turn back time and tell myself how lovely I was and to enjoy life.

The data proves it FFS 🤦‍♀️

No one is pretending anything except you.

Why don’t you tell us where in the South West you are? This mystery place where it hasn’t dipped below 26 degrees for 2 months and where you’re routinely sweating by 8am…

Again. Insufferable as fuck.

Why so emotional?
Amd also - I don’t get ‘a little bit sad’. I get depressed and I’d appreciate you not minimising and mocking that because not everyone agrees with you.

Yabu, at least we're having a nice summer this year! I hate winter it so cold dark and depressing

A “nice” summer 😆😆😆

wildfires, drought, forced early harvests, heat-related hospital admissions and deaths, trees and bushes dry and wilting… Yes, it’s been a “nice” summer ☀️

cardibach · 02/08/2026 21:57

cravingcrispmornings · 02/08/2026 21:55

Fuck me.

Some of you are just entirely insufferable. If you are willing to look past the fact this has been the hottest summer on record by some stretch, and pretend that British people have the same tolerance for heat, because you get a little bit sad in the winter and haven’t learned to deal with it yet, feel free. Just do it somewhere else.

I’m not a big fan of British stews anyway, and I wouldn’t eat one with bread but - it tops that temperature in India. Curry is a stew. What’s the difference between chilli and a stew? It’s hot in a South America.
And what do you mean by ‘pretend it makes you feel good’? I eat what I enjoy. I eat hot food most days even in a heat wave

I’m fat. I love summer. Not so keen on people who judge by body type though.

cravingcrispmornings · 02/08/2026 21:50

Leavesandthings · 02/08/2026 21:48

You can have it in the evening or on cooler days than 35 degrees. Or if you have less appetite in the heat have a late Spanish dinner or something.

That’s the entire point! There haven’t been any cooler days. Most of us can’t just shift our entire routine and shift pattern to allow for eating dinner at 10pm

I think people who love summer are mean spirited and nasty.

(See how that makes no sense?)
